  • Falling-film evaporation experiments with aqueous lithium bromide (LiBr) solution were performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of enhanced copper tubes. Enhanced tubes (a knurled tube, a spirally grooved tube, and a tube coated with $20{\mu}m$ aluminum particles) and a bare tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged evaporation fluxes of water were obtained from horizontal tubes with various film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. The enhanced performance of steam generation was compared between tubes with varying parameters. The knurled tube geometry showed the most excellent performance among the tubes tested. The specified enhanced tubes were more useful for generating steam on a low grade heat source such as waste heat.

  • The absorber in which heat and mass transfer phenomena occur simultaneously is one of the most critical components in the absorption system. It has the most significant influence on the performance and the size of the absorption system. During the absorption process, heat and mass transfer resistances exist in both liquid and vapor regions, so that the heat transfer mode should be carefully selected to reduce them. The objective of this paper is to review the previous papers analysing mathematical models of simultaneous heat and mass transfer phenomena during the absorption process. The most conventional working fluids ($H_2O$LiBr and $NH_3/H_2O$) are considered and the most common absorption modes (falling film and bubble mode) are dealt with in this review.

  • Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were performed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned (knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat flux were obtained. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes due to the fact that the heat transfer resistance increased with the film thickness. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20K for a smooth tube, and at 10K for a knurled tube. The increased performance of the knurled tube was supposed to mainly come from the effect of the increased heating surface area.

  • Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor-liquid system. In the present work, the absorption process of water vapor by an aqueous soluton of LiBr flowing inside of the vertical tube was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the heat and mass transfer rate. Particularly the effects of vapor flow conditions on the absorption process were investigated in terms of the vapor Reynolds number. As the vapor Reynolds number increased, the shear stress at the vapor-solution interface also increased. Consequently solution film became thinner at higher vapor flowrate under the co-currentflow condition. Thinner film was capable of higher heat transfer to the wall and leaded to higher absorption rate of the water vapor into the solution film.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of the behavior of the LiBr solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber. The model developed here accounts for the details of the droplets formation and impact process for absorption on horizontal tubes including the heat transfer from solution film to the tube wall. Especially. the characteristic of unsteady behavior of solution flow has been investigated. Flow visualization studies shown that the solution droplets and falling films have some of the complex characteristics. It is found that. with the numerical conditions similar to the operating condition of an actual absorption chiller/heater, the outlet solution temperature and heat flux from solution film to the tube wall have a stable periodic behavior with time. The solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber is a periodic unsteady flow. The results from this model are compared with previous experimental observation taken with a high-speed digital video camera and shown good agreement.

  • Falling film heat transfer has been widely used in many applications in which heat and mass transfer occur simultaneously, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, absorption chillers, etc. In such cases, it is desirable that the falling film spreads widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface and to reduce the thermal resistance across the film and/or the flow resistance to the vapor stream over the film. In this work, the surface is treated to have thin porous layer on the surface. With this treatment, the liquid can be spread widely on the surface by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. In addition to this, the liquid can be held within the porous structure to improve surface wettedness regardless of the surface inclination. The experiment on the evaporative cooling of an inclined surface has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the surface treatment. It is measured that the evaporative heat transfer increases about $50\%$ by the porous layer treatment as compared with that from orignal bare surfaces.

  • In the present study, an evaporative generation process of ammonia-water solution film on the vertical plate was analysed. For the utilization of waste heat, hot water of low temperature was used as the heat source. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. Counter-current solution-vapor flow resulted in the refrigerant vapor of the higher ammonia concentration than that of co-current flow. Eve the rectification of refrigerant vapor was observed near the inlet of solution film in counter-current flow. For the optimum operation of generator using hot water, numerical experiments, based on the heat exchange and generation efficiencies. revealed the inter-relationships among the Reynolds number of the solution film and hot water, and the length of generator. Enhancement of heat and mass transport in the solution film was found to be very effective for the improvement of generation performance, especially at high solution flow rate.

  • The present study investigated the enhancement of the absorption performance by the spring wrapped around the outer surface of the vertical falling film absorber tube. Heat and mass transfer enhancements were experimentally investigated, and flow visualization was performed to observe the wettability and flow pattern of the solution. The key experimental parameters were spring diameter (0.5, 1.0 mm) and spring pitch (1, 3, 10 mm), film Reynolds number (50~150), and concentration of LiBr-$H_2O$ solution (55, 60, 65 wt%). As the spring diameter was increased, the absorption mass flux, Sherwood number, Nusselt number, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient were increased The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers showed the maximum at the spring pitch of 3mm, and the ratio of pitch to diameter of approximately 3 and 6 for the spring diamter of 0.5 mm, respectively.

  • Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.

  • Vertical falling liquid film is extensively used in heat and mass transfer processes of many applications, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, and absorption chillers. In such cases, it is required that the falling film spreads widely in the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film or hydrophilic surface treatment affects the fluid physical properties of the film. Surfactant addition not only decreases contact angle between the liquid and solid surface but also changes the surface from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity. In this study, the effects of contact angle on falling film characteristics over a vertical surface have been investigated experimentally. The contact angle is varied either by an addition of surfactant to the liquid or by hydrophilic surface treatment. It is found that the wetted area is increased and film thickness is decreased by the hydrophilic treatment as compared with those of other surfaces. With this hydrophilic treatment, the falling liquid film spreads out widely in the surface. As surfactant concentration is increased, wetted area is also increased and the film thickness is substantially decreased.
