  • The differentiated services (DiffServ) is proposed to provide packet level service differentiations in a scalable manner. To provide an end-to-end service differentiation to users having a connection over multiple domains, as well as a flow marker, an intermediate marker is necessary at the edge routers, and it should not be operated at a flow level due to a scalability problem. Due to this operation requirement, the intermediate marker has a fairness problem among the transmission control protocol (TCP) flows since TCP flows have intrinsically unfair throughputs due to the TCP's congestion control algorithm. Moreover, it is very difficult to resolve this problem without individual flow state information such as round trip time (RTT) and sending rate of each flow. In this paper, to resolve this TCP fairness problem of an intermediate marker, we propose a fair scalable marker (FSM) as an intermediate marker which works with a source flow three color marker (sf-TCM) operating as a host source marker. The proposed fair scalable marker improves the fairness among the TCP flows with different RTTs without per-flow management. Through the simulations, we show that the FSM can improve TCP fairness as well as link utilization in multiple domain DiffServ networks.

  • Visible Light Communication (VLC) using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) within the existing lighting infrastructure can reduce the implementation cost and may gain higher throughput than radio frequency (RF) or Infrared (IR) based wireless systems. Current indoor VLC systems may suffer from poor downlink resource allocation problems and small system throughput. To address these two issues, we propose an algorithm called a conflict graph scheduling (CGS) algorithm, including a conflict graph and a scheme that is based on the conflict graph. The conflict graph can ensure that users are able to transmit data without interference. The scheme considers the user fairness and system throughput, so that they both can get optimum values. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can guarantee significant improvement of system throughput under the premise of fairness.

  • This paper presents a fair MAC protocol based on the CSMA/CA algorithm in visible light communication (VLC) networks. The problem of bandwidth sharing among differentiated priority in VLC networks can be solved by using number of backoff time and backoff exponent parameters with AIFS. The proposed algorithm can achieve fair allocation of the bandwidth resource among differentiated priority. The two dimension Markov chain is assisted for analyzing the proposed mechanism about throughput and delay metrics. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm improves the fairness among different traffic flows.

  • The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) function of IEEE 802.11e standard defines contention window (CW) for different Access Category (AC) limits to support Quality-of-Service (QoS). However, it have been remained the problem that the collision probability of transmission is increasing in congested network. Several different solutions have been proposed but the collision occurs among same priority queue within the same station to compete the channel access. This paper presents an APCA (Advanced Priority Collision Avoidance) algorithm for EDCA that increases the throughput in saturated situation. The proposed algorithm use reserved field's bits of FC(Frame Control) using IEEE 802.11e standard's RTS/CTS (Request to Send / Clear to Send) mechanism to avoid data collision. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of EDCA in packet loss. Using Jain's fairness index formula, we also prove that the proposed APCA algorithm achieves the better fairness than EDCA method under network congested condition.

  • The relay based cellular system has been introduced to provide the service to satisfy the user requirement. The main reasons of using relay station are to expand a service coverage and to increase a system throughput with satisfying the service requirement level. This paper proposes a new resource allocation algorithm which supports the users' throughput fairness and service coverage in the Fixed Relay Based Cellular system with OFDMA. The performance of proposed algorithm is compared with the performances of proportional fairness(PF) algorithm. The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm increases the number of active users in the service coverage while paying small amount of throughput loss.

  • Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) service category is one of the most recent ATM service categories. The GFR specification was recently finalized by the ATM Forum and is expected to become an important service category which can efficiently support TCP/IP traffic in ATM network. In GFR switch implementation, it is important to guarantee MCR (minimum cell rate) and improve fairness. In this paper, we propose a new scheduling algorithm for the GFR service. Proposed algorithm provides priority to VC (virtual circuit)s and high Priority given to a VC which has fewer untagged cells in buffer. High priority VCs are serviced before low priority VCs. Proposed algorithm can guarantee MCR and improve fair sharing of the remaining bandwidth between GFR VCs. From computer simulation results, we demonstrate the proposed scheduling algorithm provide much better performance in TCP goodput and fairness than previous schemes.

  • In order to reduce the increasing packet loss rates caused by an exponential increase in network traffic, the IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) is considering the deployment of active queue management techniques such as RED(Random Early Detection) algorithm. However, RED algorithm simple but does not protect traffic from high-bandwidth flows, which include not only flows that fail to use end-to-end congestion control such as UDP flow, but also short round-trip time TCP flows. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we propose a simple fairness queue management scheme, called AFQM(Approximate Fair Queue Management) algorithm, that discriminate against the flows which submit more packets/sec than is allowed by their fair share. By doing this, the scheme aims to approximate the fair queueing policy Since it is a small overhead and easy to implement, AFQM algorithm controls unresponsive or misbehaving flows with a minimum overhead.

  • In this paper, we investigate a multi-beam satellite communication system where multiple terminals transmit information signals to the gateway via a satellite. The satellite is equipped with phased array antennas to form multiple spot beams of which bandwidths are not identically allocated. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize fairness of beam bandwidth allocation. In order to solve the problem, we propose two heuristic algorithms; iterative beam bandwidth allocation (IBBA) and request ratio-based beam bandwidth allocation (RRBBA) algorithms. The IBBA algorithm iteratively equalizes the ratio of allocated bandwidth of each beam to their resource request while the RRBBA algorithm allocates beam bandwidth calculated from the ratio. Simulation results show that the IBBA algorithm has close fairness performance to the optimum while the RRBBA algorithm has less performance than the IBBA algorithm at the price of reduced computational complexity.
