Polyurethane casting wing fairings included in F-5E/F 15% spar kit are to be installed on aircraft wing surfaces and used for compensating the changes of the aerodynamic configuration by the leading edge extension fairings. These fairing are mandatory items in repairing wing areas and was imported from foreign supplier with long term delivery and high cost. Accordingly, local manufacturing is necessary to get rid of above disadvantages such as long term delivery and high cost. Basic properties test of specimen to be developed and part's requirements after localization was taken and its values were similar or higher when comparing with the original's even in low temp test at -55C. Casting mold process was used to manufacture the polyurethane fairings and its demensional stability & physical condition was proper and met to the related specification and drawing's requirements
In this study, a turbulence simulation is carried out in a suction type wind tunnel using grids, where turbulent flows with various turbulence intensity are successfully produced by the change of grid size, arrangement of grids and settling position, respectively. Response tests of rectangular cylinder models with aspect ratio of 2 and 4 are carried out in smooth flow and generated turbulent flows. Additionally, two types of fairing are considered such as right triangle and regular triangle. The effects of wind velocity fluctuations and fairing are discussed on vortex-induced oscillation.
Aerodynamic characteristics of three-dimensional wings in ground effect for Aero-levitation Electric Vehicle(AEV) are numerically investigated for various fairing shapes at the junctions of 3D Wings. Numerical results show that a sizeable three-dimensional comer flow separation occurs with formation of an arch vortex at the junction of main and vertical wings, and also that this is predicted the main cause of the high lift-to-drag(L/D) reduction rate of the main wing. To avoid the comer flow separation, the main idea of this study is to reduce the cross section gradient of the comer flow tube near the trailing edge for various fairing shapes. Improvements on L/D ratios of the wings are pursued by breaking the coherence of superimposed adverse pressure gradients at the wing junction when the cross section gradient is changed slowly at the trailing edge.
Future space missions will have larger telescopes in order to look deeper into space while improvising on spatial resolution. The primary mirrors for these telescopes will be so large that using a monolithic mirror will be nearly impossible because of the difficulties associated with its fabrication, transportation, and installation on a launch vehicle. The feasibility of launching these huge mirrors is limited because of their small launch fairing diameter. The aerodynamic shape of the fairing requires a small diameter, but the height of the launch vehicle, which is available for designers to utilize, is larger than the fairing diameter. This paper presents the development of an axial deployment mechanism based on the screw jack principle. The mechanism was designed and developed, and a prototype was constructed in order to demonstrate a lab model.
Acoustic load from rocket propulsion system is main source of random vibration working on the payload. To protect payload from this acoustic load, additional APS(acoustic protection system) is generally applied. Noise reduction capacity of APS can be verified through acoustic test and vibro-acoustic coupled analysis. This paper compared the results of acoustic test and vibro-acoustic coupled analysis about KSLV-I payload fairing with APS.
This paper investigated the wind-snow flow around the bogie region of a high-speed train under crosswinds using a coupled numerical method of the unsteady Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and discrete phase model (DPM). The flow features around the bogie region were discussed and the influence of bogie fairing height on the snow accumulation on the bogie was also analyzed. Here the high-speed train was running at a speed of 200 km/h in a natural environment with the crosswind speed of 15 m/s. The mesh resolution and methodology for CFD analysis were validated against wind tunnel experiments. The results show that large negative pressure occurs locally on the bottom of wheels, electric motors, gear covers, while the positive pressure occurs locally on those windward surfaces. The airflow travels through the complex bogie and flows towards the rear bogie plate, causing a backflow in the upper space of the bogie region. The snow particles mainly accumulate on the wheels, electric motors, windward sides of gear covers, side fairings and back plate of the bogie. Longer side fairings increase the snow accumulation on the bogie, especially on the back plate, side fairings and brake clamps. However, the fairing height shows little impact on snow accumulation on the upper region of the bogie. Compared to short side fairings, a full length side fairing model contributes to more than two times of snow accumulation on the brake clamps, and more than 20% on the whole bogie.
The wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are employed for the purpose of studying the aerodynamic appendices and mechanism on suppression for the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). This paper takes the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as an example to conduct the wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model. The results of wind tunnel test show that it is the crash barrier that induces the vertical VIV. CFD numerical simulation results show that the distance between the curb and crash barrier is not long enough to accelerate the flow velocity between them, resulting in an approximate stagnation region forming behind those two, where the continuous vortex-shedding occurs, giving rise to the vertical VIV in the end. According to the above, 3 types of wind fairing (trapezoidal, airfoil and smaller airfoil) are proposed to accelerate the flow velocity between the crash barrier and curb in order to avoid the continuous vortex-shedding. Both of the CFD numerical simulation and the velocity field measurement show that the flow velocity of all the measuring points in case of the section with airfoil wind fairing, can be increased greatly compared to the results of original section, and the energy is reduced considerably at the natural frequency, indicating that the wind fairing do accelerate the flow velocity behind the crash barrier. Wind tunnel tests in case of the sections with three different countermeasures mentioned above are conducted and the results compared with the original section show that all the three different countermeasures can be used to control VIV to varying degrees.
The on-board system for the air supply to the payload fairing(PLF) of a launch vehicle using both high and low pressure air was designed. The design concept was obtained from the CFD analysis of a Russian interstage air supply system, and a collector was adopted to expand the high pressure air. To verify that the on-board system would work as designed, a simplified axisymmetric computational model was made and a CFD analysis was also performed. It was found that the flow ejected from the hole of the collector expands to the Mach number of 4 and is soon retarded due to the action of viscosity. It was also found that a small gap between the low pressure duct and equipment bay wall can cause large velocity in PLF over the velocity requirement and no gap should be allowed in the design.
