  • This study investigates the complex mechanism of work-family conflict affecting counterproductive behavior of employees based on resource conservation theory and 417 valid samples by using polynomial regression and response surface analysis. Counterproductive work behavior refers to any intentional behavior of an individual that has potential harm to the legitimate interests of the organization or its stakeholders. Results show that first, work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) had four matching types. Compared with "high WFC-low FWC," "low WFC-high FWC" and "low WFC-low FWC" matching conditions, the employee self-control resource depletion and counterproductive work behavior (CWB) are at their highest under "high WFC-high FWC" congruence matching condition. Second, the joint effect of WFC and FWC has a U-shaped relationship with counterproductive behavior. Compared with the "high WFC-low FWC" match state, the level of CWB in the "low WFC-high FWC" match state is higher. Third, the depletion of self-control resources played a mediating role in the effect of WFC on counterproductive behavior. Fourth, emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between the congruence of WFC and FWC and self-control resource depletion. Emotional intelligence was higher, and the positive relationship between the congruence of WFC and FWC and self-control resource depletion was weaker.

  • The objective of this study was to find optimum amount of bamboo smoke distillate (BSD) and reaction time (RT) for ammonia removal in food waste compost (FWC). BSD amount (30 to 90 mL BSD/600 g FWC) and RT (1 to 3 h) significantly affected the ammonia removal in FWC. Within the design boundaries, the optimum conditions for maximum ammonia removal (8.47 ppm $NH_3$/600g FWC) were 74 mL BSD/600 g FWC (0.123 mL BSD/g FWC) and 3 h RT. The BSD was effective on ammonia removal in FWC, rather than vinegar (p < 0.05). Our results proved a good potential of BSD to serve as an alternative deodorant for FWC.

  • The effects of the composition of a mixture containing food waste compost (FWC), rice bran (RB), and oak sawdust (SD) on the antler-type fruiting body (FB) yield of Ganoderma lucidum were studied. Experiments were performed using 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40% (w/w) FWC added to a basal growth medium consisting of 20% (w/w) RB and 80% (w/w) SD. The content of 15% FWC gave the highest FB yield ($27.0{\pm}1.3$ g/bottle), which was 44% higher than the yield ($18.6{\pm}2.8$ g/bottle) of the control treatment. However, FWC contents of 20~40% showed reduced yield (2.4~23.0 g/bottle), partly because FWC had a high Na concentration (0.6%). These results demonstrate the potential for use of FWC as a component of a growth medium for production of G. lucidum FBs.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil chemical properties and uptake of salts by the plants(Raphanus and Lactuca) according to the application of the food waste compost(FWC), which was produced on a large scale at a pilot plant. Generally, FWC has a high electrical conductivity(EC) and contains much salts, such as Na, K, Ca, and Mg, and because of these when FWC are applied to soils there is a possibility of salt ac-cumulation in soils and growth inhibition on plants. The FWC were applied at the rates of 0, 20, 40, 80, and 160 Mg/ha in the 1/5,000a pots on the basis of dry weight, and the plants were cultivated for 60 days. And then, changes of pH and EC in soils and uptake of salts by the plants were investigated. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. After the cultivation of the Raphanus and Lactuca, pH increased and EC decreased in the soils. 2. Uptake rates of Na and K were slightly increased with the application of the FWC. In uptake rate of Ca, Raphanus and Lactuca was decreased, increased, respectively. In Raphanus, uptake rate of Mg was highest with the application of the FWC at 40 Mg/ha, and in Lactuca, continuously increased with application of the FWC.

  • This study examined how the resources from work, family and community lowered family-to-work conflict (FWC) and enhanced family-to-work facilitation (FWF) of employed women with a child younger than 18 years old in order to provide empirical support for the Korean government's effort to create a family-friendly community as a way to help employed mothers balance work and family life. Information from 608 employed mothers living in 45 different communities were extracted from the 4th-wave of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families in 2012, while community resources indicators were selected from the 2012 database of the Korean Statistical Information Service. Findings from the HLM analysis were as follows. First, there were significant variation in FWC and FWF among employed mothers depending on the communities they resided in. Second, work satisfaction, representative of work resource, relieved FWC and enhanced FWF, but spousal support, which represents family resource, affected neither FWC nor FWF. Third, community resources, as represented by family-friendly environment and frequent volunteering by community residents, lowered FWC but failed to enhance FWF. Lastly, family-friendly community resources served to mitigate the negative relationship between work satisfaction and FWC. This study is meaningful in that it provided empirical evidence for the contribution of community resources to work-family balance of employed mothers.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate applicability of food waste compost (FWC) as a substrate for cultivation of Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes, and Pholiota adipose, and to determine contents of Ca, Mg, Na, and K in fruiting bodies (FB). FB yield per substrate in FWC-free controls was $53{\pm}4g/kg$ for G. lucidum, $270{\pm}90g/kg$ for L. edodes, and $1,430{\pm}355g/kg$ for P. adipose. Substrates supplemented with FWC showed the highest FB production at FWC content of 10% for G. lucidum ($64{\pm}6g/kg$), and 13% for L. edodes ($665{\pm}110g/kg$) and P. adipose ($2,345{\pm}395g/kg$), which were 1.2~2.5 times higher than the values for the controls. P. adipose contained higher amounts of mineral elements than the other species. Ca, Mg, Na, and K content in FB did not show a significant relation to FWC content.

  • This study examined the relationships among work-family role conflicts(WFC, FWC), work distress(WDIS), and life satisfaction(LS) for female workers using child daycare center in workplace. From the data of 137 female workers, it showed statistically significant results that FWC on WDIS and WDIS on WFC were positive. It also demonstrated the degree of WFC was higher, the LS level was lower. The results revealed not only WDIS fully mediated between FWC and LS, but also WFC partially mediated the relationship between WIDS and LS. Comparing to the previous studies that failed to tell the directions of work-family role conflicts on LS, this study distinguished the bi-directional work-family role conflicts in searching for causal relationships among WFC, FWC, WDIS, and LS. This study recommended further studies for comparing female workers using child daycare center in workplace or not.

  • This study analyzed and compared growth characteristics under large-scale fermentation at 35℃ of three microorganisms with the ability to reduce odor-producing substances in livestock. The three microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis FWC1, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NAAS1, and Pichia farinosa NAAS2) evaluated in this study have been proven effective in reducing odor-inducing substances. Bacillus subtilis FWC1 exhibited the highest viable cell count when using 2% maltodextrin as carbon source, 0.05% soy-peptone as nitrogen source, and 0.3% yeast extract. The optimum media composition for B. amyloliquefaciens NAAS1 was 1.2% modified-starch with 0.8% yeast extract. The spore formation rate in the mass production of the Bacillus strains was over 90%, indicating that optimal growth medium compositions have been identified. In the case of P. farinosa NAAS2, our optimized growth medium [2% (w/v) glucose and 1% (w/v) yeast extract] improved biomass production.
