  • Enhancement of strength and ductility is the main reason for the extensive use of FRP jackets to provide external confinement to reinforced concrete columns especially in seismic areas. Therefore, numerous researches have been carried out in order to provide a better description of the behavior of FRP-confined concrete for practical design purposes. This study presents a new approach to obtain strength enhancement of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) confined concrete cylinders by applying artificial neural networks (ANNs). The proposed ANN model is based on experimental results collected from literature. It represents the ultimate strength of concrete cylinders after CFRP confinement which is also given in explicit form in terms of geometrical and mechanical parameters. The accuracy of the proposed ANN model is quite satisfactory when compared to experimental results. Moreover, the results of the proposed ANN model are compared with five important theoretical models proposed by researchers so far and considered to be in good agreement.

  • Concrete filled FRP tube has lately attracted attention as the member that can substitute the conventional reinforced concrete. Glass fiber and carbon fiber are some of available materials for FRP tube. Carbon tube is filament wound with specified winding angle to meet the appropriate capacity demands. Confinement effect of carbon tube is varied according to winding angle. In this study, a total 4 of large scale circular specimens of 30cm diameter and 60cm height is tested. To estimate the effect of winding angle and thickness of carbon tube on the increased confined compressive strength, the test tube are wound with $\pm45^{\circ}\;and\;\pm30^{\circ}$ with two types of thickness, 2mm and 3mm, respectively. It is shown that effectively increased confined strength and ductility are observed from the specimens with $\pm45^{\circ}$ winding angle than $\pm30^{\circ}$ winding angle. Increasing thickness is not as effective as adjusting winding angle for the confinement of concrete core.

  • An experimental study has been carried out on square plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. A total of 78 specimens were loaded to failure in axial compression and investigated in both axial and transverse directions. Slenderness of the columns, number of wrap layers and concrete strength were the test parameters. Compressive stress, axial and hoop strains were recorded to evaluate the stress-strain relationship, ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens. Results clearly demonstrate that composite wrapping can enhance the structural performance of square columns in terms of both maximum strength and ductility. On the basis of the effective lateral confining pressure of composite jacket and the effective FRP strain coefficient, new peak stress equations were proposed to predict the axial strength and corresponding strain of FRP-confined square concrete columns. This model incorporates the effect of the effective circumferential FRP failure strain and the effect of the effective lateral confining pressure. The results show that the predictions of the model agree well with the test data.

  • This paper presents the results of axial pressure testing on reinforced concrete columns (RCCs) filled with confined normal concrete (NC) and high-strength concrete (HSC) using glass-fiber reinforced plastic pipes (GRP) casing as well as fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). This study aims to evaluate the behavior and mechanical properties of columns confined with GRP casing and FRP wrapping under pressure loads. The major parameters in the experiments were the type of concrete, the effect of GRP casing and FRP wrapping, as well as the number of FRP layers. 12 cylindrical RCCs (150*600) mm were prepared and divided into two groups, NC and HSC, and each group was divided into two parts. In each part, one column was without FRP strengthening layer, a column was wrapped with one FRP layer and another column with two FRP layers. All columns were tested under concentrated compression load. The results of the study showed that the utilization of FRP wrapping and GRP casing improved compression capacity and ductility of RCCs. The addition of one and two layers-FRP wrapping increased compression capacity in the NC group to an average of 18.5% and 26.5% and to an average of 10.2% and 24.8% in the HSC group. Meanwhile, the utilization of GRP casing increased the compression capacity of the columns by 4 times in the NC group and 3.38 times in the HSC group. The results indicated that although both FRP wrapping and GRP casing result in confinement, the GRP casing resulted in increased compression capacity and ductility of the RCCs due to higher confinement. Furthermore, the confinement effect was higher on columns made with NC.

  • Triaxial behavior of concrete cylinders wrapped with FRP material has been investigated for the increase of concrete strength by lateral confinement. Using the model by Richart et al., a modified empirical equation was proposed to estimate the strength of concrete cylinders with FRP confinement based on the linear relationship between the concrete strength and lateral confining pressure. From the experimental stress-strain result of the cylinder specimens having similar confining pressure, less ductility was observed for higher strength concrete. But the compressive strength of the specimen was linearly increased by lateral confinement. The confinement effectiveness coefficient for the strength enhancement of the cylinders by FRP wrap was obtained as 2.27 from the regression analysis.

  • This study suggested a section of a new module that will allow for applying a large section in order to solve the technical difficulties mentioned above and to secure low stiffness of FRP, developed a new FRP + concrete composite girder that is filled with the appropriate amount of concrete. To identify the structural behavior of this FRP + concrete composite girder, experiments were conducted to measure its shear strength according to the difference in the strength of confined concrete and variation of the shear span to depth. The results of the shear strength test confirmed the composite effect from confining concrete and the effect of increase in strength proportional to the strength of concrete.

  • In the current study, a force-based fiber frame finite element model of FRP concrete structural members has been developed. For compressive behaviors of confined concrete wrapped by FRP jackets, the multiaxial behavior of concrete has been considered with the equivalent tangent modulus of concrete. The behavior of FRP jackets has been modeled using the mechanics of orthotropic laminated composite materials in two-dimensional stress states. The force-based finite element formulation is based on the force-interpolation functions within the element without using the displacement shape functions to satisfy the equilibrium in element levels.
