Evaluating the bond strength of FRP in concrete samples using machine learning methods

  • In recent years, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) as one of the most common ways to increase the strength of concrete samples, has been introduced. Evaluation of the final strength of these specimens is performed with different experimental methods. In this research, due to the variety of models, the low accuracy and impact of different parameters, the use of new intelligence methods is considered. Therefore, using artificial intelligent-based models, a new solution for evaluating the bond strength of FRP is presented in this paper. 150 experimental samples were collected from previous studies, and then two new hybrid models of Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA)-Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC)-ANN were developed. These models were evaluated using different performance indices and then, a comparison was made between the developed models. The results showed that the ICA-ANN model's ability to predict the bond strength of FRP is higher than the ABC-ANN model. Finally, to demonstrate the capabilities of this new model, a comparison was made between the five experimental models and the results were presented for all data. This comparison showed that the new model could offer better performance. It is concluded that the proposed hybrid models can be utilized in the field of this study as a suitable substitute for empirical models.

CFRP판 긴장재를 위한 부착형 정착장치의 정착성능 (Anchorage efficiency of mold-type anchorage for CFRP plates)

  • FPR(Fiber Reinforced Polymer)는 중량에 비해 높은 강도, 높은 내부식성 등 우수한 역학적 특성으로 인해 최근 건설분야에 적용되는 사례가 많아지고 있으며, 특히 콘크리트 구조물 보강에 가장 활발히 적용되고 있다. FRP를 이용한 전통적인 보강방법은 인장면에 FRP를 부착하는 부착공법이었으나, 부착공법은 FRP의 박리 또는 부착파괴와 같은 조기파괴 문제점과 고정하중과 분담과 사용성 개선이 어려운 단점을 갖고 있다. 이러한 FRP 부착공법의 문제점들을 해결하기 위한 노력으로 최근에는 CFRP 판에 프리스트레스를 도입하는 공법에 대한 연구들이 시작되었다. 판형태의 CFRP를 이용하여 구조물에 긴장력을 도입하면 주인장철근의 응력을 경감시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 구조물의 균열폭과 휨변형도 감소시킬 수 있으며, 추가되는 활하중뿐만 아니라 고정하중도 일부 분담할 수 있게 되어 고가의 CFRP를 효율적으로 활용할 수 있는 방법이 된다. CFRP 판 긴장공법을 위해 최우선적으로 해결되어야 하는 것은 CFRP 긴장재를 정착하기 위한 적절한 정착장치의 개발이다. 본 연구에서는 CFRP 판 긴장재를 위한 정착장치를 개발하고자 CFRP 판의 정착단부 상세를 변수로 한 정착장치 인장실험을 수행하였으며, 기존 상용 정착구와 비교하여 저비용으로 제작 가능한 CFRP 판 긴장재용 몰드형 정착구의 성능을 검증하였다. 몰드형 정착장치에 대한 성능실험 결과 CFRP 판 긴장재의 표면이 거칠게 처리된 시편이 가장 정착성능이 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 정착단부의 형상변화는 정착성능에 기여하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

Design approach for a FRP structural formwork based steel-free modular bridge system

  • The paper presents results of parametric studies, and an overall approach for the design of a modular bridge system which incorporates a steel-reinforcement free concrete slab cast on top of carbon FRP stiffened deck panels which act as both structural formwork and flexural reinforcement, spanning between hollow box type FRP girders. Results of the parametric studies are highlighted to elucidate important relationships between critical configurational parameters and empirical equations based on numerical studies are presented. Results are discussed at the level of the individual deck and girder components, and as a slab-on-girder bridge system. An overall design methodology for the components and bridge system including critical performance checks is also presented.

Finite element modeling of the influence of FRP techniques on the seismic behavior of historical arch stone bridge

  • Since the preservation of monuments is very important to human societies, different methods are required to preserve historic structures. In this paper, 3D model of arch stone bridge at Pont Saint Martin, Aosta, Italy, was simulated by 1660 integrated separate stones using ABAQUS$^{(R)}$ software to investigate the seismic susceptibility of the bridge. The main objective of this research was to study a method of preservation of the historical stone bridge against possible earthquakes using FRP techniques. The nonlinear behavior model of materials used theory of plasticity based on Drucker-Prager yield criterion. Then, contact behavior between the block and mortar was modeled. Also, Seismosignal software was used to collect data related to 1976 Friuli Earthquake Italy, which constitutes a real seismic loading. The results show that, retrofitting of the arch stone bridge using FRP techniques decreased displacement of stones of spandrel walls, which prevents the collapse of stones.

A neuro-fuzzy approach to predict the shear contribution of end-anchored FRP U-jackets

  • The current study targets to estimate the contribution of the end-anchored FRP composites in resisting shear force using a soft computing tool i.e., adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). A total of 107 sets of data accumulated from literature was utilized for the development and evaluation of the current ANFIS model. A comparative analysis between the ANFIS predictions and the acquired experimental results has shown that the ANFIS predictions are in very good agreement with that of experimental ones. Additionally, the accuracy of the current ANFIS model has been weighed up against the estimates of nine widely adopted design guidelines. Based on various statistical parameters, it has been deduced that the effectiveness of the current ANFIS model is better than the considered design guidelines. Besides this, a parametric study was carried out to explore the combined effect of different parameters as well as the impact of individual parameters.

Analysis of behavior of bare and in-filled RC frames subjected to quasi static loading

  • Study on the inelastic response of bare and masonry infilled Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames repaired using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) subjected to quasi- static loading is presented in the work. The hysteresis behaviour, stiffness retention, energy dissipation and damage index are the parameters employed to analyze the efficacy of FRP strengthening of bare and brick in-filled RC frames. It is observed that there is a significant improvement in load carrying capacity of brick infilled frame over bare RC frame. Also FRP strengthened brick infilled frame performs much better than FRP repaired bare frame under quasi static loading. Repair and retrofitting of brick infilled RC frame shows an improved load carrying and damage tolerance capacity than control frame.

수중 구조물의 보수·보강을 위한 수중 접착제, 에폭시와 섬유복합재의 개발 (Development of Underwater Adhesive, Epoxy, and FRP Composite for Repair and Strengthening of Underwater Structure)

  • 현재 육상 노출 콘크리트 구조물의 보수 및 보강공법에는 많은 신기술이 개발되었고 연구도 많이 진행되고 있으나, 수중에 존치되어 있는 구조물, 즉 교각, 부두 잔교 및 강관파일과 같이 해수 및 수중에 잠겨 있으며, 지속적인 하중을 받는 콘크리트 및 강재의 보수보강 기술에 대한 연구는 많지 않다. 그러므로 이 연구에서는 해수나 수중에 있는 구조물의 보수 보강 공법에 사용할 수 있는 수중 에폭시를 개발하였고, 이 에폭시 재료와 보강섬유을 이용하여 수중용 FRP 복합재를 개발하였다. 개발된 재료의 성능을 검증하기 위하여 다양한 기초물성에 대한 시험을 수행하였다. 성능시험 결과, 개발된 에폭시는 수중에서도 풀림이 거의 없고 부유물질이 발생하지 않는다. 또한 수중이라는 제약 조건 속에서도 30,000 cps 이상의 높은 점성을 갖기 때문에 우수한 작업성을 보이며, 수중에서도 육상에서와 거의 유사한 2 MPa 이상의 부착성능을 발휘하는 것으로 나타났다. 내화학성 시험 결과에서도 중량변화율은 약 0.5~1.0% 이내로 측정되어 우수한 내염 저항성을 확인하였다.

철근콘크리트 부재 보강용 유사연성 FRP 하이브리드 시트의 부착 특성 (Bond Capacity of Pseudo-Ductile FRP Hybrid Sheet to Strengthen RC Members)

  • 탄소 섬유와 유리 섬유를 체적 비율 1 : 8.8로 조합하여 강성이 높은 탄소 섬유가 인장에 저항한 후 먼저 파단되고 그 후 유리 섬유가 인장에 저항하여 높은 연성을 발휘하도록 한 하이브리드 시트를 제작하고 시트 길이를 100, 200, 400 mm로 각각 다르게 하여 시트 길이에 따른 콘크리트와 하이브리드 시트 계면에서의 부착 특성에 대해 고찰하였다. 실험 결과, 시트의 유효 부착 길이는 100$\sim$200 mm 사이에서 존재하고, 시트의 콘크리트 계면에서의 효율적인 부착강도를 발휘하기 위해서는 150 mm 이상의 부착 길이가 확보되어야 하며, 콘크리트와 하이브리드 시트 계면에서의 부착강도는 대략 3.0 MPa이고 슬립량은 0.175 mm로 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Behavior of damaged and undamaged concrete strengthened by carbon fiber composite sheets

  • Many existing concrete structures suffer from low quality of concrete and inadequate confinement reinforcement. These deficiencies cause low strength and ductility. Wrapping concrete by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets enhances compressive strength and deformability. In this study, the effects of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps on the behavior of concrete are investigated experimentally. Both monotonic and repeated compressive loads are considered during the tests, which are carried out on strengthened undamaged specimens, as well as the specimens, which were tested and damaged priorly and strengthened after repairing. The experimental data shows that, external confinement of concrete by CFRP composite sheets improves both compressive strength and deformability of concrete significantly as a function of the thickness of the CFRP composite wraps around concrete. Empirical equations are also proposed for compressive strength and ultimate axial deformation of FRP composite wrapped concrete. Test results available in the literature, as well as the experimental results presented in this paper, are compared with the analytical results predicted by the proposed equations.
