A Study on Mechanical Characteristics and Behaviors of FRP Composite with Three Different types of Matrices under High Temperature (온도 및 매트릭스 특성 변화에 따른 섬유강화 복합재료의 역학적 특성 및 구조적 거동 변화)

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are used extensively in aerospace, marine, automotive, infrastructure, chemical processing and sporting good applications. A concern with using FRP composites in some engineering structures is their high flammability and poor fire resistance In this research, material properties of FRP composites at increasingly high temperatures was measured and verified. The obtained mechanical properties of FRP composites were performed according to ASTM D3039/D3039M and tested to a wide range of heat conditions with temperatures from Room-temp. to 300 for times up to 30 min. It is found that the mechanical properties of FRP composites dropped with increasing heat or temperature. The reduction to the properties was due mainly to thermal degradation and combustion of the polymer matrix.

Study of Failure Mode and Static Behavior of Lightweight FRP Truss Bridge Deck System (복합재료 트러스 교량시스템의 정적거동 및 파괴모드에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • There is a concern with worldwide deterioration of highway bridges, particularly reinforced concrete. The advantages of fibre reinforced plastic(FRP) composites over conventional materials motivate their use in highway bridges for replacement of structures. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. In this paper, a systematic approach for analysis of this FRP deck bridge is presented. Multi-step linear numerical analyses have been performed using the finite element method to study the structural behavior and the possible failure mechanism of the FRP deck-superstructure system. Deck's self-weight and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck are considered in this study. From this research, the results of the numerical analyses were corroborated with field test results. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanism for the FRP deck and truss bridge system. The results presented in this study may be used to propose engineering design guideline for new and replacement FRP bridge deck structure.

  • Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been enlarged as a substitution material to the general construction materials having certain long-term problems such as corrosion, etc. However, it could be difficult to apply the FRP material, which has a linear shape generally, to an arch-shaped tunnel structure. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this study to develop a device to form a designed cross section of FRP material by pulling out with a curvature. A sample of the circled FRP product was successfully produced and then the sample has been tested to identify its physical characteristics. Then, intensive feasibility studies on the circled FRP panel to be used for a tunnel lining structure have been carried out by numerical analyses. As a result, it appears that the new circled FRP-concrete composite panel has a high capability to be used for a tunnel lining material without any structural problem.

  • This paper describes the need for a ductile Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for concrete structures. Using the material hybrid and geometric hybrid, it is demonstrated that the pseudo-ductility characteristic can be generated in FRP rebar. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at 4mm and l0mm nominal diameters using an hand lay up method. Tensile specimens from these bars were tested and compared with behavior of FRP rebar and steel bar

  • 부식 열화는 교량 기술자들에게 있어서 지속적인 도전을 요구하는 문제가 되어왔는데, 스텔스 항공기를 개발하게 한 새로운 재료 기술은 교량의 부식을 해결할 수 있게 하였다. 즉, 경량의 고강도 재료로 높은 피로 저항성을 갖고 있고, 부식에 강한 복합체는 교량의 재료로서 아주 바람직한 성질을 갖고 있다 섬유 보강 폴리머(FRP) 복합재료를 교량의 건설에 이용하려는 프로젝트는 1998년 현재 80 여 개가 넘게 진행되고 있는데, 이 중 미국 내에서 31개의 프로젝트가 수행되고 있다. 이 글은 미국 내에서 FRP복합체를 교량 공학 분야에 적용하려는 초기의 성공적인 시도들에 관한 내용으로 복합체의 장점, 특성, 교량 적용시 고려 사항, 그리고 향후 복합재료에 관한 기술을 토목 구조물에 적용하는데 필요한 소요 기술 등에 관하여 정리한 것이다. 이 새로운 재료는 신설 구조물의 건설과 기존 교량의 보수 및 보강에 모두 적용할 수 있으며, FRP복합체 기술을 토목 구조물과 기반 시설물 건설 분야에 적용하는 것은 지금까지 성공적인 결과를 보여 주고 있다 미국연방도로국(FHWA, Federal Highway Administration)은 이 기술을 미국 내 교통 기반 시설물인 신규 교량의 건설은 물론 기즌 교량의 보수 및 보강에 활용하는 방안에 대하여 관심을 갖고 있다.

Micromechanics-based Analysis on Tensile Behavior of the Sprayed FRP Composites with Chopped Glass Fibers (유리단섬유로 보강된 분사식 섬유보강 복합재료의 인장거동에 관한 미세역학 기반 해석)

  • In this paper, experimental tests and theoretical studies were carried out to evaluate the tensile behavior of the sprayed FRP composite with chopped glass fiber. For this, a series of tensile strength tests with various strain rates were conducted on the specimens of the matrix and sprayed FRP composite. Sprayed FRP composite contained chopped glass fibers with fiber length of 15mm and a specific volume fraction of fibers of 25 %. An inverse simulation was conducted to simulate the strain rate sensitivity based on the present experimental data of the epoxy resin. The simulated viscosity value is adapted to the micromechanics-based viscoelastic damage model(Yang et al., 2012), and the overall tensile behavior of sprayed FRP composites is predicted. It was seen from the comparative study between present experimental data and predication results that the proposed methodology can be used to predict the viscoelastic behavior of the sprayed FRP composite.

  • 인발성형 적층 FRP 복합소재의 재료상수는 일반적으로 시편실험을 통해 구해지고 있으나, 본 논문에서는, 실험에서 구한 탄성계수가 부재일 경우를 위해, Micromechanics와 Classical Laminate Theory (CLT)를 이용한 적층 FRP 복합재료의 탄성계수(E/sub L/과 E/sup b//sub L/) 예측모델을 제시하였다 또한 예측모델로부터 구한 값과 실험으로부터 얻은 실측값을 비교하여 그 적정성을 검증하였고, 예측모델의 민감도 및 확률적인 특성을 구성소재 (Constituents)의 재료특성에 근거해 평가하였다.

  • This analysis evaluated small and large temperature gradient effects on the FRP deck considering lightweight of FRP deck and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck. Finally, the analytical results shows the possible failure mechanism of FRP deck under various temperature changes and its corresponding index is suddenly varied depending on the rapid change of temperature on the deck plate.

  • Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been increased as an alternative in a bid to supplement the problems with general construction materials such as long-term problems corrosion, etc. However, there are still many problems in using a linear-shaped FRP material for a tunnel lining structure which has arch-shape in general. In this study, the loading tests for the FRP-concrete composite member was carried out to evaluate their applicability as a tunnel reinforcement material, which are based on the results from preliminary numerical studies for identifying the behavioral characteristics of FRP-concrete composite member. Moreover, numerical analysis under the same condition as applied in the loading tests was again conducted for analysis of mechanical behavior of the composite member. As a result of the load test and numerical analysis, it appears that the FRP-concrete composite member is greatly subject to shear movement caused by bending tension acting on the interface between two constituent members.

Evaluation of AR Characteristics on Microscopic Fracture Mechanism of A17075/CERP Hybrid Composite (Al 7075/CFRP 하이브리드 복합재료의 미시적 파괴특성에 대한 AE특성평가)

  • When compared to other composite materials such as FRP and MMC, hybrid composite material is more attractive one due to the high specific strength and the resistance to fatigue. However, the fracture mechanism of hybrid composite material is extremely complicated because of the bonding structure of metals and FRP. Recently, nondestructive technique has been used to evaluate the fracture mechanism of these composite materials. In this study. AE technique has been used to clarify the fracture mechanism and the degree of damage for Al 7075/CFRP hybrid composite material. It was found that AE event, energy and amplitude among AE parameters were effective to evaluate fracture process of Al 7075/CFRP composite material. In addition, the relationship between the AE signal and the characteristics of failure surface using optical microscope was discussed.
