  • The main objective of this study is to suggest section design method of CFFT(Concrete Filled FRP Tube) structures which are considered of confined effect by FRP tube and using high strength concrete and PS strands for pier. It may be stated that the proposed method may be implemented as a rational and practical approach for CFFT section design.

  • This paper presents the results of tensile characteristics for developing FRP tendon with strand type. The performance targets were decided to compare the tensile characteristics of developing FRP tendon. Test specimens were manufactured by applying some improvements to enhance the tensile characteristics. The influence factors on the tensile characteristics have been found from the test results. Those are the fiber weight fraction, the pitch, the FRP cross sectional area, and the type of external fibers. The tensile characteristics were satisfactory compared to the performance targets.

  • Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are light in weight, non-corrosive and exhibits high tensile strength. FRPs having superior material properties to corrosive steels have been widely replacing steel bars or tendons used in concrete structures as flexural reinforcements. Although current design guidelines for estimating shear strength of FRP concrete beam follow the format of conventional reinforced concrete design method, there are noticeable differences among the existing formulas in calculating the contributions of concrete to shear resistance. In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) technique is employed as an analytical alternative to existing methods for predicting shear capacity of FRP concrete beams. Influential factors on shear strength were identified through literature review and input in ANN and the ANN was trained for the target ultimate shear obtained from database. The results from ANN were compared with existing formulas for its accuracy. It was found that the developed ANN were more closely predicting the test data than those of the currently available predictive equations.

  • CFRP tendons have been attempted in concrete structures as a substitute for steel tendons considering their many advantages such as the corrosion-resistance, light weight etc. However, the elastic behavior up to failure is likely to result in ductility problems. To overcome such problems, prestress concrete beams with partially bonded tendons have been developed and suggested. In this new system, the un-bonded part near the mid-span contributes to the improvement of ductility. And the bonded parts at both ends play a role as a safe anchorage. According to the previous research on the static behavior, the suggested method has demonstrated enough ductility and strength. However it is essential to verify the long-term safety for repetitive fatigue loads under service states. For this purpose, flexural fatigue loading tests were carried out in this research. This paper includes an experimental investigation on the static load-carrying capacities of the beams with or without fatigue tests. The results showed that the beams prestressed with partially bonded CFRP tendons possessed good fatigue capacity under the constant cyclic loads.

  • Prestressing steels are susceptible to corrosion, which is considered the major reason in the deterioration of prestressed concrete structures. To solve this problem, many research have been made to utilize new type of tendons. FRP tendons have many advantages compared to steel tendons. However, FRP tendons have some disadvantages, such as no plastic behavior. This study focused on the flexural behavior of prestresssed concrete beams which is fabricated by post-tensioning method with CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) tendons. Th results drawn from the study, prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons have higher flexural cracking load, flexural yielding load, and flexural fracture load. While displacement at the fracture stage is lower compared to prestressed concrete beams with steel tendon. Excessive steel reinforcement lead lower ductility index. So, appropriate reinforcement guideline is needed. Further more, prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons can have sufficient ductility index when ruptured by crushing of concrete or used unbonded tendon. Therefore, the best design method for prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons is over-reinforcement, and use of unbonded tendon.
