Recently, the external prestressing method is being much frequently used in strengthening reinforced concrete structures because of it's excellent load resistance and serviceability increases comparing to other strengthening methods. However, it is true that the research on fatigue performance of concrete structures strengthened by the external prestressing using FRP tendons is rare. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the external prestressing method by analyzing the characteristics of the reinforced concrete beam strengthening using FRP tendons under repeated loads. Test variables adopted in this experimental study are the types of external prestressing material (steel or FRP tendon) and the repeated load ranges. The repeated load range have the minimum 50% of yield load of reinforced concrete beam and the maximum 70-85%. The test beams are loaded by 4 point loadings with 3 Hz sine wave. From this experimental study, it is confirmed that the reinforced concrete beams strengthened using FRP tendons have sufficient safety against fatigue, especially in FRP tendon itself, tendon at deviators and tendon at anchorages.

FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) tendons can be used as an alternative to solve the corrosion problem of steel tendons. Material properties of FRP tendons-bond strength, transfer length, development length-must be determined in order to apply to concrete structures. First of all, in case of application for pretension concrete members with CFRP tendons, transfer length is an important characteristic. The bond of the material characteristics should be demanded clearly to apply to PSC structures prestressed with FRP tendons. This paper investigated on the bond characteristics of FRP reinforcements with various surface-type. To determine the bond characteristics of FRP materials used in place of steel reinforcement or prestressing tendon in concrete, pull-out testing suggested by CAN/CSA S806-02 was performed. A total of 40 specimens were made of concrete cube with steel strands, deformed steel bar and 6 different surface shape FRP materials like carbon or E-glass. Results of the bonding tests presented that each specimen showed various behaviors as the bond stress-slip curve and compared with the bond characteristic of CFRP tendon developed in Korea.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) usually exhibits inherent brittleness under tensile stress. Application of FRP tendons to concrete beam leads to undesirable flexural behavior due to limited ductility compared to prestressed concrete beam with steel tendons. It has been experimentally observed that partial improvement of flexural behavior can be achieved by releasing FRP tendons' strain by unbonding FRP tendons. In order to estimate and apply the degree of improvement to the design, reasonable yet practical model predicting flexural strength as well as overall flexural behavior of unbonded FRP prestressed concrete beam is needed. In this study, an elaborated model in describing curvature distributions and flexural strength at ultimate stage of unbonded FRP tendons is described. There have been close agreements on the flexural strength of the FRP prestressed concrete beam between the predictions by nonlinear computer program and by the model.
Recently, researches about fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) which has excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength as a substitution material to steel tendon have been actively pursued. This study is performed to examine FRP tendon used prestressed beam's safety under service load. The specimen was a prestressed concrete beam with internal bonded FRP tendon. In order to compare the member fatigue capacity, a control specimen of a prestressed concrete beam with ordinary steel tendon was tested. A fatigue load was applied at a load range of 60%, 70%, and 80% of the 40% ultimate load, which was obtained though a static test. The fatigue load was applied as a 1~3 Hz sine wave with 4 point loading setup. Fatigue load with maximum 1 million cycles was applied. The specimen applied with a load ranging between 40~60% did not show a fatigue failure until 1 million cycles. However, it was found that horizontal cracks in the direction of tendons were found and bond force between the tendon and concrete was degraded as the load cycles increased. This fatigue study showed that the prestressed concrete beam using FRP tendon was safe under a fatigue load within a service load range. Fatigue strength of the specimen with FRP and steel tendon after 1 million cycles was 69.2% and 59.8% of the prestressed concrete beam's static strength, respectively.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have proved to be reliable as strengthening materials. Most of existing studies used single types of FRP composites. Therefore, in this experimental study, carbon FRP sheet, aramid FRP sheet, and hybrid FRP plate including glass fibers were fabricated, and the effect of pre-stressed FRP composites on flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams was investigated. In total, eight RC beam specimens were fabricated, including one control beam (specimen N) without FRP composites and seven FRP-strengthened beams. The main parameters were type of FRP composite, the number of anchors used for pre-stressing, and thickness of FRP plates. As a result, the beam strengthened with pre-stressed FRP plate showed superior performance to the non-strengthened one in terms of initial strength, strength and stiffness at yielding, and ultimate strength. As the number of anchors and thickness of FRP plate (i.e., amount of FRP plates) increased, the strengthening effect increased as well. When hybrid FRP plates were pre-stressed, the strengthening effect was higher in comparison with pre-stressed single type FRP plate.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates can be used more efficiently in strengthening applications by applying prestress to the CFRP laminates. A key problem for prestressing with CFRP laminates is anchoring the laminates. These may include fracture to the CFRP laminates due to excessive gripping force or slippage of the CFRP laminates out of the anchorage zone caused by low friction between the anchor device and the lamiantes. The main objective of this study is the development of an applicative mold-type anchorage system for prestressed CFRP laminates through experimental study. The experimental parameters were the type of anchorage detail and the effect of surface treatment. The test results showed that the developed anchor assures 100% CFRP laminate strength.

Despite many advantages of FRP materials, such as corrosion resistance, their linear elastic behavior up to rupture is likely to result in a lack of ductility. This paper discusses ductility improvement methods for prestressed concrete beams using FRP tendons. The methods were evaluated thorough extensive analytical and experimental investigations. The methods include optimization of sectional ductility through proper reinforcement, concrete confinement, concrete reinforcement with fibers, and prestressing with unbonded tendons.

Since non-corrosive Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) tendons have been in increasing use for underground and coastal structures constantly contacted with fresh water or sea water because of their superiority to metallic ones in corrosion-resistance, new non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons has been developed and investigated to verify the effectiveness of tendon force, which consist of mainly FRP pipes and Highly Expansive Mortar(HEM). The major factors considered in this experiment were expansive pressures of HEM during its hydration, sleeve lengths and types, and anchoring methods of tendon. New anchoring system were investigated from the pull-out tests. The pull-out procedures of the FRP tendons in the various pipe filled with HEM were analyzed and improved ideas were suggested to develop novel non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons The pull-out tests for the FRP tendon and new non-metallic anchoring system were conducted. The results show that non-metallic anchoring system for the FRP tendon has been more stablized due to the gradual expansive pressrure of HEM, as tims goes. Since tile lower stiffness of FRP pipes causes the weakness of anchoring force, it requires the increase of stiffness using a carbon fiber or an increased section area.
Strengthening concrete structures with fiber reinforced polymer materials have grown to be a widely used method over most parts of the world today, which FRP was developed in 1960. A method to apply prestressing force to FRP is developed newly in these days, which can use the maximum performance of FRP materials. This paper presents the results of a study on improvement in flexural capacities of RC beams strenthened with near surface mounted prestressed CFRP rod and plate. Experimental variables include type of CFRP, prestressing level. Tests show that prestressed beams exhibit a higher crack-load as well as a higher steel-yielding load compared to non-prestressed strengthened beams.

Anchoring systems with structural stability and endurance have been one of the most important elements for PSC structures, especially for the structures using non-corrosive FRP tendons. FRP tendons are in increasing use for underground and coastal structures constantly contacted with fresh water or sea water because of their superiority to metallic ones in corrosion-resistance. In this study new non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons has been tested and investigated. The newly developed anchoring system utilizes FRP pipes and HEM (Highly Expansive Mortar). The major factors considered in this experiment were expansive pressure of HEM during its hydration and the strength of GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) Pipe. Anchoring forces of the new anchoring system were investigated from the pull-out testes. The authors analyzed pull-out procedures of the FRP tendons in the various pipe filled with HEM and suggested an improved idea to develop novel non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons
