  • We briefly report the observation of five ostracod species: Scottia birigida Smith, Matzke-Karasz, Kamiya and Ikeda, 2002; Codonocera mortenseni Poulsen, 1962; Pyrocypris noctiluca Kajiyama, 1912; Euconchoecia cf. chierchiae Muller, 1890; and E. pacifica Chavtur, 1976. All five species are new records of Korean ostracod fauna. Specimens were collected during the 2014-2016 Korean Indigenous Species project. For three species we also include mtCO1 sequences. Currently, there are 65 published reports of indigenous Korean ostracod species.

  • The taxonomic research based on extensive investigations and specimen collections throughout all varieties of freshwater and marine habitats of Chinese waters, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, which involved accounting the vast number of collected specimens, data and literature (both within and outside China) were carried out over the last 40 years. There are totally 361 recorded species of gobioid fishes belonging to 113 genera, 5 subfamilies, and 9 families. This gobioid fauna of China comprises 16.2% of 2211 known living gobioid species of the world. This report represents a summary of previous researches on the suborder Gobioidei. A recently diagnosed subfamily, Polyspondylogobiinae, were assigned from the type genus and type species: Polyspondylogobius sinensis Kimura & Wu, 1994 which collected around the Pearl River Delta with high extremity of vertebral count up to 52-54. The undated comprehensive checklist of gobioid fishes in China will be provided in this paper.

  • We investigated cladoceran fauna from 71 study areas in South Korea. Sixty-two taxa were found, of which there were 30 planktonic and 25 littoral-benthic cladoceran species. In the present study, taxa of cladocera were identified by biographical traits. Species endemic to the Far East were found in the northernmost areas of South Korea, whereas Palearctic species were found in the southernmost areas. Generally, coexistence of cladoceran species in northern and southern areas was observed, implying possible faunistic complexes of cladocera in various areas of South Korea. We believe that further studies conducted in different habitats will greatly expand our knowledge of the biodiversity of cladocera in South Korea.

  • Aquatic oligochaetes were investigated from a small amount of sediment sampled from the Jungnang Stream, an urban stream in Seoul, Korea, in November 2012. Sorted oligochaetes were observed under a light microscope in a drop of carbonated water, and then preserved in 70% ethanol. Some specimens were slide mounted using glycerin and Eupharal. As a result, the following 12 species were identified including 8 new Korean records, Bothrioneurum vejdoskyanum Stolc, Branchiodrilus hortensis (Stephenson), Chaetogaster cristalinus Vejdosky, Nais communis Piguet, Nais pardalis Piguet, Dero obtusa d'Udekem, Piguetiella denticulata Liang, and Haemonais waldvogeli Brescher and 4 additional known species, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Cleparede, Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard, Chaetogaster diastrophus (Gruithuisen), and Stylaria fossularis Leidy. This study shows how freshwater oligochaetes are diverse even in urban streams in Korea, if a proper sampling and examining method is employed.

  • The specimens of the recent conchostracans belonging to order Spinicaudata collected from freshwater habitats at 13 localities in South Korea during the period from May 1981 to May 1992 were examined. As a result of the present study, two species were identified: Caenestherielru gifuensis (Ishikawa, 1895), and Eurimnodio braueriona Ishikawa, 1895. The two species were described and figured in this paper. This is the first report of the recent conchostracan fauna from Korea.

  • Testate amoebae are easily recognized as their characteristic shells from other protistan groups. They in which more than 1,900 species have been recorded are mixture of heterogeneous groups mainly composed of Amoebozoa and Cercozoa. In Korea, 74 species of testate amoebae have been recorded since late 1980s. Here I report a list of 12 unrecorded species of testate amoebae from Korea which were discovered during 2016-2018: Arcella crenulata Deflandre, 1928; Centropyxis cassis(Wallich, 1864); C. delicatula Penard, 1902; C. hirsuta Deflander, 1929; C. orbicularis Deflandre, 1929; C. sylvatica (Deflandre, 1929); Cyclopyxis eurystoma Deflandre, 1929; C. intermedia Kufferath, 1932; C. kahli(Deflandre, 1929); Difflugia diafana Vucetich, 1987; D. manicata Penard, 1902; Awerintzewia cyclostoma Schoutenden, 1906. As a result the fauna of testate amoebae in Korea is composed of 86 species. There are still much more species remained to be discovered in Korea. The faunal studies on testate amoebae will provide us valuable information about freshwater and soil environments.

  • Members of this family Sciomyzidae are known as marsh flies and snail-killing flies because most of the known larvae are obligate predators of Mollusca, especially freshwater and terrestrial Gastropoda. Most species are found in the shallow ephemeral aquatic habitats with rich organic substrates, such as the hard-water streams, small ponds and lakes in mountain valleys. To date, a total of 8 marsh fly species in 4 genera have been known in Korea. During a taxonomic survey of the family Sciomyzidae in Korea, the authors have found the genus Ditaeniella Sack, 1939; thus, it was discovered for the first time in Korea. This genus can be distinguished by the other related taxa with hairs over much of the mesopleuri, hairs on the prosternum and one orbital seta. In addition, the nominate species, Ditaeniella grisescens Meigen, 1830 was also firstly recoded in the Korean fauna.
