An Experimental Study on the Retrieval Efficiency of the FRBR Based Bibliographic Retrieval System (FRBR 모형 기반 서지검색시스템의 검색 효율성 평가 연구)

  • This study examines the retrieval efficiency of the FRBR-based bibliographic retrieval system. To do this, we built two experimental retrieval systems(a FRBR-based system constructed through FRBRizing algorithms and an OPAC-based retrieval system) using 387 music materials coded in a KORMARC format. Next, we set up six hypotheses and compared these two systems in terms of recall, precision, and retrieval time using 28 participants and a questionnaire with 12 queries. The results show that the average recall value of the FRBR-based system Is higher than that of the OPAC system regardless of query types and the average precision and retrieval time values of manifestation queries of the OPAC system is more efficient that those of the FRBR-based system. This study results can be used to customize digital library interfaces as well as to improve the retrieval efficiency of the bibliographic retrieval system.

Designing a FRBR Work Grouping Algorithm of Bibliographic Records using a Role Term Dictionary of Authors (저자역할용어사전 구축 및 저작군집화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the issues resulted from the process of grouping KORMARC records using FRBR WORK concept and to suggest a new method. The previous studies did not sufficiently address the criteria or processes for identifying representative authors of records and their derivatives. Therefore, our study focused on devising a method of identifying the representative author when there are multiple contributors in a work. The study developed a method of identifying representative authors using an author role dictionary constructed by extracting role-terms from the statement of responsibility field (245). We also designed another way to group records as a work by calculating similarity measures of authors and titles. The accuracy rate of WORK grouping was the highest when blank spaces, parentheses, and controling processes were removed from titles and the measured similarity rates of authors and titles were higher than 80 percent. This was an experiment study where we developed an author-role dictionary that can be utilized in selecting a representative author and measured the similarity rate of authors and titles in order to achieve effective WORK grouping of KORMARC records. The future study will attempt to devise a way to improve the similarity measure of titles, incorporate FRBR Group 1 entities such as expression, manifestation and item data into the algorithm, and a method of improving the algorithm by utilizing other forms of MARC data that are widely used in Korea.

A Study on the Bibliographic Description of RDA & KCR4 Cataloging Rules for FRBRizing the Aggregates (집합물의 FRBR 구현 방안에 관한 연구 - RDA, KCR4 목록규칙 기술방안을 중심으로 -)

  • This study is to suggest the bibliographic description of RDA & KCR4 cataloging rules for FRBRizing the aggregates based on aggregates modeling. It is to suggest bibliographic description of RDA & KCR4 cataloging rules of aggregates through analyzing FRBR and LRM aggregates modeling and comparing RDA and KCR4 cataloging rules about aggregates. First, it is to describe the bibliographic records based on object oriented model, and to describe both aggregates works and separate works appropriately. Second, in case of aggregates by one person, family, or corporate body, collective title as aggregates work and separate works in aggregates must be regulated in RDA. In KCR4, collective titles rules should be regulated for aggregate works and separate works should be described. Third, aggregates of works by different persons, families, or corporate bodies should be accessible by aggregates work and separate works, and aggregates of works by different persons, families, or corporate bodies without collective title should be accessible by each of the works in both RDA and KCR4. Fourth, augmentation aggregates could be accessible by main work's expression, the expression of aggregates work, and separate expressions of the augmentation. This study will contribute to FRBRize the aggregates by suggesting bibliographic description of RDA & KCR4 cataloging rules.

An Application of FRBR Model to KORMARC Records (KORMARC 레코드에 대한 FRBR 모델의 적용 실험 - 국립중앙도서관 서지레코드를 사례로 하여 -)

  • This study intends to make a comprehensive investigation on an application of FRBR model to KORMARC records. To the end, issues associated with FRBR implementation are analyzed, and automatic algorithms to covert bibliographic records into FRBR model are examined thoroughly. On the basis of it. this study implemented four-level hierarchical bibliographic structure of FRBR model using existing KORMARC records. 161 sample records for an experiment were selected from Korea national library. The work chosen as sample records was "Hamlet." Results suggest that considerable difficulties would be encountered in the process of FRBRizing KORMARC records.

  • This study examines the application of the FRBR model to an integrated KORMARC format using music materials. To do this, first, we analysed an integrated KORMARC format as well as a KORMARC format for audiovisual materials and then based on its analysis results, constructed an algorithm that allows the transformation from KORMARC to FRBR. Second, we used the algorithm to see whether it fits to the existing KORMARC database. Three suggestions were proposed to support the application of the FRBR model on existing integrated KORMARC library catalogues. This study results can be used not only to improve digital library interfaces but also as basic data in revising cataloging rules for the adaptation of the FRBR model.
