  • The purpose of this study is to select appropriate location factors for wind power plant, provide detailed classification criteria, and find out appropriate sites for installing wind power plant in Gangwondo. In this study, the following 11 factors were extracted for site selection of wind power plant : wind resource, topography (valley angle, distance to the ridge), forest density, land use, preservation area, national park, Baekdu-Daegan, noise, shade, Transmission Line, and approaching roads. Each factor had relatively different level of importance so that AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) technique was used to calculated the weighted value per factor. For overlay analysis, classification criteria were prepared for each factor and each factor was classified into 3 grades : very appropriate, intermediate, poor. According to overlay analysis, the areas which received the highest grade (grade 5) was only in 0.16% of the total area of Gangwondo and had a tendency to exist along the mountain ridge over 600-meter elevation. Through analyzing the yearly average of wind power density, it was proved that the wind power density of areas with grade 4 or 5 had abundant wind resource over $400W/m^2$.

  • Korean Landscape Garden may be described according to its stage of development. In the primitive agricultural era, the garden was preceded by vegetable yards and at this time rock arranging (Soo-Sok garden) was initiated together with the megalithis culture of dolmens, heavenly altars and tumuli. In the early Three Kingdom period palace gardens were built on a grand scale and toward the end of fourth century temple garden were introduced along with Buddhism. These gardens evolved to the flourishment of "HWAGE"(terraced gardens) rock arrangements of ZEN, early KOR-YO period. Especially since the middle of KOR-Yo period the "IM-CHUN"(forest and pond) garden became popular, while during Cho-Son period "HWAGE" in the back yard, pond and pool garden and "IM-CHUN" style country villa became fashionable. The Korea traditional Landscape garde may be characterized that first it is a nature Landscape style, which makes the maximum accomodation with the surrounding nature. Secondly, the Korean garden is built creatively by utilizing the elements of its climate and topography, Kogu-Ryo, Paik-Je great-Kaya and Sil-Ra had developed original a castle town plans and beautiful gardens rock arrangements which precede the equivalent style of China and set the prototype for Japan. The Landscape art of waterfalls and rock arrangements at An-Ap-Chi garden of 7th century has no equals in China and set the origin of pond style of Japanese garden.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop landslide susceptibility analysis techniques using artificial neural networks and then to apply these to the selected study area of Janghung in Korea. We aimed to verify the effect of data selection on training sites. Landslide locations were identified from interpretation of satellite images and field survey data, and a spatial database of the topography, soil, forest, and land use was constructed. Thirteen landslide-related factors were extracted from the spatial database. Using these factors, landslide susceptibility was analyzed using an artificial neural network. The weights of each factor were determined by the back-propagation training method. Five different training datasets were applied to analyze and verify the effect of training. Then, the landslide susceptibility indices were calculated using the trained back-propagation weights and susceptibility maps were constructed from Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the five cases. The results of the landslide susceptibility maps were verified and compared using landslide location data. GIS data were used to efficiently analyze the large volume of data, and the artificial neural network proved to be an effective tool to analyze landslide susceptibility.

  • Timber stand age information of timber in industrialized plantation forest is generally collected by field surveying which is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and very costly. It is also inconsistent in analyses perspective. As an alternative, The objective of this research is to present a practical solution for estimating timber age of loblolly pine plantation using Landsat thematic mapper (TM) images, shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM), and national elevation dataset (NED). A multivariate regression model was developed based upon satellite image-based information (i.e.normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), tasseled cap (TC) transformation, and derived tree heights). A residual studentized technique was applied to remove potential outliers. After that, a refined age estimation model with a correlation coefficient R-square of 84.6% was obtained. Finally, the feasibility test of estimated model was performed by comparing estimated and measured stand ages of timber plantations using test datasets of plantation stands (2,032 stands). The result shows that the proposed method of this study can estimate loblolly pine stand age within an error of $2{\sim}3$ years in an effective and consistent way in terms of time and cost.

  • During the summer season, more than half of the annual precipitation in Korea occurs during the summer season due to the geographical location in the Asian monsoon belt. So, this causes severe soil erosion from croplands, which is directly linked to the deterioration of crop/land productivity and surface water quality. Therefore, much attention has been given to develop accurate estimation tools of soil erosion. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of using the empirical Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and the physical-based model of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) to quantify eroded amount of soil from agricultural fields. Input data files, including climate, soil, slope, and cropping management, were modified to fit into Korean conditions. Chuncheon (forest) and Jeonju (level-plain) were selected as two Korean cities with different topographic characteristics for model analysis. The results of this current study indicated that better soil erosion prediction can be achieved using the WEPP model since it has better power to illustrate a higher degree of spatial variability than USLE in topography, precipitation, soils, and crop management practices. These present findings are expected to contribute to the development of the environmental assessment program as well as the conservation of the agricultural environment in Korea.

  • The De-militarized Zone(DMZ) on the Korean Peninsula is ecologically conserved and naturally developed as access to the area has been controlled in the past five decades. As a result, biodiversity and wetlands are developed very well, but they have not been sufficiently surveyed due to land mines and security reasons. Focusing on the Kyongui Line area in Paju DMZ, this study aims at examining the status of forested wetlands in detail through an on-site survey and understanding the features of forested wetlands in DMZ. The forested wetlands of Paju Kyongui Line area are inhabited by naturally grown Salix koreensis Andress. and Acer ginnale Maxim. and affected by Sacheon Basin region extensively. As the topography of this region is created of inundated area and gentle ground, it is easily affected by hydrology and irrigation and has ideal conditions as forested wetlands. In addition, forest wetlands in this area were used as agricultural land in the past but now transformed into palustrine forested wetlands after being deserted for long time. However, as construction of roads and railways increasingly blocks water paths, the coverage of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Amorpha fruticosa L. is on the rise, which indicates that forestedwetlands are gradually becoming inland over time.

  • As air pollution caused by fine dust becomes serious, interest in the spread of fine dust and prediction of air quality is increasing. The causes of fine dust are very diverse, and some fine dust naturally occurs through forest fires and yellow dust, but most of them are known to be caused by air pollutants from burning fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal or from automobile exhaust gas. In this paper, the CALPUFF model recommended by the US EPA is used, and CALPUFF diffusion modeling is performed by generating a wind field through the CALMET model as a meteorological preprocessing program that generates a three-dimensional wind field, which is a meteorological element required by CALPUFF. Through this, we propose a fine dust diffusion modeling and air quality prediction system that reflects complex topography.
