Purpose: Guided bone regeneration(GBR) has emerged as a treatment in the management of osseous defects associated with dental implants. But several studies have reported different degrees of success of guided bone regeneration, depending upon the type of barrier selected, presence or absence of an underlying graft material, types of graft material, feasibility of technique, and clinician's preference. The aim of the present study was to evaluate bone formation following dental implant placement with augmentation materials at dehiscence defects in dogs. Material and Methods: Standardized buccal dehiscence defects($3{\times}5\;mm$) were surgically 2 Mongrel dog's mandibles, each 8 SLA surface, 8 anodizing surface implants. Each buccal dehiscence defect received flap surgery only(no treatment, control), $Cytoflex^{(R)}$ membrane only, Resolut $XT^{(R)}$ membrane only, Resolut $XT^{(R)}+Osteon^{TM}$. Animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks postsurgery and block sections were harvested for histologic analysis. Resuts: All experimental group resulted in higher bone formation than control. Resolut $XT^{(R)}+Osteon^{TM}$ group resulted appeared highest defect resolution. There was no difference between SLA and anodizing surface, nonresorbable and resorbable membrane. Conclusion: GBR results in rapid and clinically relevant bone closure on dehiscence defects of the dental implants.
This study is about the costume relics that were excavated from M10 of the 6th site, M13 and M14 of the 8th site among all the Runghai(龍海) ancient tomb sites that were known as the royal family's tombs of Balhae, which were built from the late 8th century to the early 9th century. These costume relics were also introduced in the academic journal of Chinese archaeology(考古) 6 in 2009. The summary of the results that focused on finding features of the costume relics and its meaning were as follows: 1. Male and female statues, both of which were excavated from the Runghai ancient tomb sites, had the shape and composition of the government official's costumes such as the Danryeong(團領), Bokdu, and Gwadae. The female's hairstyle and accessories were quite similar to other costume relics of Balhae. In particular, the male statues wearing the Danryeong and Bokdu were considered as the normal figures of government officials of Balhaeafter the mid 8th century. 2. The female statue wearing the male attire is considered as a maid, and we can confirm that women dressing up like a man was a popular trend in Tang(唐), and this trend was introduced to Balhae. 3. The back flap(垂脚) of Bokdu that the male statue is wearing in M10 of the 6th site, has a shape that has not been found in the ancient relics of both Balhae and Tang. Therefore, it is considered as a unique shape of Bokdu of Balhae. However, it needs to be observed more and discussed in the future. 4. In regards to the Gwadae, the outside of the Gwadae is decorated with jade and has an embossed carving that is gold inside. The Gwadae of the Runghaisites has a unique design and it is distinguished from other ancient relics. 5. The gold trefoil crown and the leather conical hat that were found in M14 of the 8th site can be seen as the basic composition of official's hats in ancient Korea. Also, the motif of the gold trefoil is closely related to Anthemion that is often seen in the relics of the Three Kingdom period. Thus, we can assume according to this important finding that the style of ancient Korea official's hats came from either the king or a royal family of Balhae after the mid 8th century.
We obtained successful functional and esthetic results by grafting of iliac marrow-cancellous bone in 2 cases of alveolar-palatal cleft patients. Bone graft of alveolar-palatal clefts provide bony support to adjacent teeth of cleft area, prevented from relapse of orthodontic arch expansion, closure of oroantral fistula and improvement of speech problem. 1. In one case, extraction of upper right central incisor that was little bone support, alignment of rotated teeth and expansion of collapsed arch segment were done with pre-ortodontic treatment. The other case, Bone grafting was done after removal of prosthesis with no preorthodontic treatment. 2. After mucoperiosteal incision in cleft area. The mucosal flap of labial area, palate and nose were separation and the raised nasal mucosa was sutured for closure of oroantral fistula. Then, the iliac marrow-cancellous bones were grafted to cleft site. 3. After 6 months of operation, we had seen the new bone deposition to cleft site in dental radiography and prosthetic treatments of missing teeth were done.
Gorham-Stout disease is a rare skeletal disease which is progressive and spontaneous and idiopathic resorption of whole body bone. In the initial stage, the osteolytic site is replaced by histologically benign vascular proliferation without new bone formation and finally by dense fibrous tissues. We encountered with a patient involving the mandible with attention by the clinical, radiographic, scintigraphic, angiographic, and computed tomography. We resected the mandibular lesion which was reconstructed with a fibular free flap. We report literature review with a mandibular lesion involved with Gorham-Stout disease.
Microstomia can be occurred as a result of direct injury to tissues such as chemical, thermal and electrical burns, and animal bites. It also may be secondary to contracture of burned perioral skin, or may result from scarring after reconstructive lip surgery. Narrowing of the oral aperture is not only disfiguring, but also limiting the oral access needed for introduction of food, insertion of dentures, oral hygiene, and dental treatment. Limited mouth opening may also interfere with mastication and speech. Few reports exist regarding correction of microstomia and reconstruction of the corners of the mouth. A 16-year-old girl with a bilateral cleft lip and palate presented with the limited mouth opening (approximately 20 mm), the esthetic problem due to the small lip, and the cleft lip-nasal deformity. The microstomia was corrected by bilateral commissuroplasty using "over and out" buccal mucosa flaps proposed by Converse. The intercommissure distance was increased from the preoperative 40 mm to the postoperative 60 mm. The one-year postoperative intercommissure distance was 54 mm, because the 6 mm relapse was occurred. The bilateral commissuroplasty using "over and out" buccal mucosa flap could increase the width and general size of the oral aperture and improve the lip appearance.

With the increasing demand for aesthetic implant dentistry, the importance of implant restoration is emphasized not only in the functional aspect but also in the aesthetic aspect. The aesthetic restoration of dental implants in the anterior maxilla is a challenge for clinicians because it requires proper harmony in three following conditions; reconstruction of hard tissue, soft tissue, and aesthetic prosthesis. The soft tissue aesthetics are dependent upon the condition of the supporting hard tissue because the osseous structure provides a framework for the development of a healthy and aesthetic soft tissue interface. Therefore, the augmentation of hard tissue is a first step and especially, optimal 3-dimensional position of implant is the most important factor in aesthetic implant restoration. The management of soft tissue is a second step, and the final step is a restoration of harmonic prosthesis using provisional restoration with proper emergence profile. This clinical report describes the procedure of bone augmentation in labial dehiscence defect, Vascularized Interpositional Periosteal-Connective Tissue (VIP-CT) flap for aesthetic anterior soft tissue, and the importance of provisional restoration and impression taking stage with customized impression coping.
The external morphology of male and female of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) was studied using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three types of sensilla were identified on the funicle of antennae. The trichoid sensilla were most conspicious and distributed with a characteristic sharp structure at the apical end. Basiconic sensilla were showed distal curvature about $13{\mu}m$ long and $1.2{\mu}m$ to $1.4{\mu}m$ in diameter. Grooved sensilla were showed a finger-like projections at the peg apex. The function of these sensilla likely to be olfactory. The mouthparts were adapted for sucking food, and formed a elongate rostrum which was incorporated with labrum. The labrum was a small and flap-like shape. The slender and paired maxillary palp seemed to combine with each other lengthwise to long tube. The tarsus typically consisted of 5 segments, which might be variously modified, principally by thickening or flattening. The segment beared a pair of claws. Beneath the claws, there was a pair of pad-like pulvillia and a bristle-like median empodium. L. trifolii might secreted on the pulvillus and empodium an adhesive substance that enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. Male terminalia was complicated. The name 'aedeagus' seemed the best available general term for the copulatory organ, otherwise, female terminalia was usually relatively simple. This structure was reduced and formed a telescopic, eversible, and tubular ovipositor.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate exophytically vertical bone formation in rabbit calvaria by the concept of guided bone regeneration with a custom-made porous titanium membrane combined with bone graft materials. For this purpose, a total of 12 rabbits were used, and decorticated calvaria were created with round carbide bur to promote bleeding and blood clot formation in the wound area. Porous titanium membranes (0.5 mm in pore diameter, 10 mm in one side, 2 mm in inner height) were placed on the decorticated calvaria, fixed with metal pins and covered with full-thickness flap. Experimental group I was treated as titanium membrane only. Experimental group II, III, IV was treated as titanium membrane with BBM, titanium membrane with DFDB and titanium membrane with FDB. The animals were sacrificed at 8 and 12 weeks after surgery, and new bone formation was assessed by histomorphometric as well as statistical analysis. 1. Porous titanium membrane was biocompatable and capable of maintaining the regeneration space. 2. At 8 and 12 weeks, all groups demonstrated exophytic bone formation and there was a statistical significant difference among different groups only at 12 weeks. 3. The DFDB group revealed the most new bone formation compared to other groups (p<0.05). 4. At 12 weeks, DFDB and FDB groups showed the most significant resorption of graft materials (p<0.05). 5. The BBM was not resorbed at all until 12 weeks. 6. The fixation metal pin revealed excellent effect in peripheral sealing. On the basis of these findings, we conclude that a porous titanium membrane may be used as an augmentation membrane for guided bone regeneration, and DFDB as an effective bone forming graft material. The fixation of the membrane with pin will be helpful in GBR technique. However, further study is required to examine their efficacy in the intraoral experiments.
There are various treatment methods including barrier membranes in attaining periodontal regeneration and regaining the function of destructed periodontal tissues due to periodontal disease. Barrier membranes consist of non-Resorbable and resorbable types such as Dura mater and $Guidor^{(R)}$ used in the treatment of intrabony defects and classII furcation defects have been shown to be effectively increased the amount of new bone and cementum. In our study we used premolars with class III furcation defects created by removing the bone 4mm apically from CEJ in adult dogs and placed resorbable membrane Dura mater and $Guidor^{(R)}$ for the test group and flap operation was carried out for the control groups. The effect of membrane on junctional epithelium, alveloar bone, cementum, and gingival connective tisssue in the regeneration and healing potential of periodontal tissues was evaluated and healing results were evaluated histologically and histometrically 8 weeks following the surgical procedure. 1. In the clinical observation, there was no exposure of furcation defects in the control group, whereas slight membrane exposure was noted in the test group. 2. New bone was formed up to the level of the notch in the control group, whereas in the test group new bone formation was observed above the level of the notch. 3. New cementum was formed in both groups of the experiment. 4. The connective tissue observed between the new cementum and new bone in the test group were functionally orientated, compared to the irregular formation of connective tissues found in the control group. 5. Root resorption or ankylosis was not observed in any of the groups 6. The mean and median of the control group were 4.31% and 2.23% and for the Dura mater group were 27.85% and 15.57% respectively. There was no significant difference between Dura mater and the control group. 7. The mean and median of the control group were 4.31% and 2.23% and for the $Guidor^{(R)}$ group were 37.27% and 37.19% respectively. There was a significant difference in these two groups(P$Guidor^{(R)}$ were 37.27% and 37.19%. There was no significant difference between the two test groups. Thus, by using Dura mater and Guidor in classIII furcation defects, the predictable amount of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone regeneration may result.
Purpose: Gingival recession is a major esthetic concern and may lead to root sensitivity during periodontal treatment. Coronally advanced flaps (CAFs) with and without acellular dermal matrix (ADM) are widely used in root coverage procedures. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of CAF in combination with ADM in the treatment of gingival recession. Methods: PubMed, The Cochrane Library, and Embase were used to identify relevant articles. The articles were screened, data were extracted, and the quality of the studies was assessed by three reviewers with expertise in clinical practice, trials, statistics, and biomedical editing. The clinical endpoints of interest included changes in recession, probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and keratinized tissue (KT). Results: Ten randomized controlled trials were identified, including six studies that compared CAFs with ADM and CAFs using connective tissue grafting (CTG) and four studies that compared CAFs with or without ADM. No statistically significant differences were found between the use of ADM and CTG, whereas statistically significant differences were found between groups in which ADM and CAF were combined and groups that underwent CAF alone with regard to recession coverage, CAL, and KT. The combination of CAF with an ADM allograft achieved more favorable recession coverage and recovery of CAL and KT than CAF alone. Conclusions: The results from the ADM and CTG groups suggest that both procedures may be equally effective in clinical practice. Given the limitations of this study, further investigation is needed to clarify the effectiveness of ADM and CAF in clinical practice.
