  • This article investigates the static behaviour of functionally graded (FG) plates sometimes declared as advanced composite plates by using a simple and accurate quasi-3D and 2D hyperbolic higher-order shear deformation theories. The properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction according to exponential law distribution (E-FGM). The kinematics of the present theories is modeled with an undetermined integral component and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate; therefore, it does not require the shear correction factor. The fundamental governing differential equations and boundary conditions of exponentially graded plates are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work. Analytical solutions for bending of EG plates subjected to sinusoidal distributed load are obtained for simply supported boundary conditions using Navier'is solution procedure developed in the double Fourier trigonometric series. The results for the displacements and stresses of geometrically different EG plates are presented and compared with 3D exact solution and with other quasi-3D and 2D higher-order shear deformation theories to verify the accuracy of the present theory.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate free vibration of functionally graded porous nanocomposite rectangular plates where the internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) are distributed in the matrix either uniformly or non-uniformly according to three different patterns. The elastic properties of the nanocomposite are obtained by employing Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model. The GPL-reinforced plate is modeled using a semi-analytic approach composed of generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) and series solution adopted to solve the equations of motion. The proposed rectangular plates have two opposite edges simply supported, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two edges. The 2-D differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the governing equations and to implement the boundary conditions. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made between the present results and those reported by well-known references for special cases treated before, have confirmed accuracy and efficiency of the present approach. New results reveal the importance of porosity coefficient, porosity distribution, graphene platelets (GPLs) distribution, geometrical and boundary conditions on vibration behavior of porous nanocomposite plates. It is observed that the maximum vibration frequency obtained in the case of symmetric porosity and GPL distribution, while the minimum vibration frequency is obtained using uniform porosity distribution.

  • This article presents a new analytical model to study the effect of porosity on the shear correction factors (SCFs) of functionally graded porous beams (FGPB). For this analysis, uneven and logarithmic-uneven porosity functions are adopted to be distributed through the thickness of the FGP beams. Critical to the application of this theory is a determination of the correction factor, which appears as a coefficient in the expression for the transverse shear stress resultant; to compensate for the assumption that the shear strain is uniform through the depth of the cross-section. Using the energy equivalence principle, a general expression is derived from the static SCFs in FGPB. The resulting expression is consistent with the variationally derived results of Reissner's analysis when the latter are reduced from the two-dimensional case (plate) to the one-dimensional one (beam). A convenient algebraic form of the solution is presented and new study cases are given to illustrate the applicability of the present formulation. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effect of the porosity distribution on the (SCFs) for various FGPBs. Further, the law of changing the mechanical properties of FG beams without porosity and the SCFare numerically validated by comparison with some available results.

  • This article introduces a novel analytical model for examining the impact of porosity on shear correction factors (SCFs) in functionally graded porous beams (FGPB). The study employs uneven and logarithmic-uneven modified porosity-dependent power-law functions, which are distributed throughout the thickness of the FGP beams. Additionally, a modified exponential-power law function is used to estimate the effective mechanical properties of functionally graded porous beams. The correction factor plays a crucial role in this analysis as it appears as a coefficient in the expression for the transverse shear stress resultant. It compensatesfor the assumption that the shear strain is uniform across the depth of the cross-section. By applying the energy equivalence principle, a general expression for static SCFs in FGPBs is derived. The resulting expression aligns with the findings obtained from Reissner's analysis, particularly when transitioning from the two-dimensional case (plate) to the one-dimensional case (beam). The article presents a convenient algebraic form of the solution and provides new case studies to demonstrate the practicality of the proposed formulation. Numerical results are also presented to illustrate the influence of porosity distribution on SCFs for different types of FGPBs. Furthermore, the article validates the numerical consistency of the mechanical property changesin FG beams without porosity and the SCF by comparing them with available results.

  • Functionally graded materials (FGMs) have gained substantial attention from researchers due to their exceptional strength and thermal resistance. Their utilization in the aviation and automobile industries has significantly improved the efficiency of various structural components. Moreover, stiffened panels find wide applications in aerospace and automobile structures and these panels are frequently exposed to extreme environments. It is from this perspective that our research is focused on analysing the vibroacoustic response of stiffened functionally graded panels subjected to external dynamic excitations in a thermal environment. In the present research work, a finite element model is developed to conduct the dynamic analysis of functionally graded stiffened panels using the first-order shear deformation theory. Subsequently, a boundary element based model is also developed and coupled with the finite element model to investigate the sound radiation behaviour of those panels in a thermal environment. The material properties of FG stiffened panels are considered as temperature dependent, while the thermal environment is assumed to be acting as linearly varying through the panel's thickness. The present investigation aim to compare the vibroacoustic responses of different panels due to stiffener orientations, material compositions, power law indices and plate thicknesses at various temperatures. The research findings highlight the significant impact of addition of stiffeners, its orientation and material compositions on the sound radiation characteristics of these panels under thermal environments. The present numerical model can easily be employed for analysing the sound radiation behaviour of other types of flat or curved stiffened panels having arbitrary geometry and boundary conditions.
