  • The FEM analysis of machine tools is the general analysis process to evaluate machine performance in the industry for a long time. Despite advances in FEM software, because of difficult simplicity of CAD drawing, little experience of joints stiffness modeling and troublesome manual contact area divide for bindings, the industry designers think the FEM analysis is still an area of FEM analysis expert. In this paper, the automation of modeling process with simplicity of drawing, modeling of joints and contact area divide is aimed at easy FEM analysis to enlarge utilization of a virtual machine tools. In order to verify the effects of modeling automation, a slant bed type model with tilting table is analyzed. The results show FEM modeling automation method only needed 45 minutes to complete the whole modeling process, while manual modeling method requires almost one month with 8200 calculations for coordinate transformations and stiffness data input.

  • As the finite element method has become a considerable and effective design tool in ship structural analysis, modeling of three dimensional finite element mesh is more necessary than before. However, the unique style and complexity of a ship usually make the modeling be hard and costly. Although most pre-processor of FEM software and geometric modeler provides modeling function, the capability is quite limited for complicated structure. In order to perform FEM modeling quickly, it is necessary to extract, rearrange, and formalize data from ship design database for partially automatic mesh generation. In this paper, the process of designing relational data tables from design data is shown as a part of analysis automation with the application of engineering database concept.

  • The stability and dynamic performance of a flapper-nozzle servo valve depend on several factors, such as the motion of the armature component and the deformation of the spring tube. As the only connection between the armature component and the fixed end, the spring tube plays a decisive role in the dynamic response of the entire system. Aiming at predicting the vibration characteristics of the servo valves to combine them with the control algorithm, an innovative dynamic stiffness based on a distributed parameter model (DPM) is proposed that can reflect the dynamic deformation of the spring tube and a suitable discrete method is applied according to the working condition of the spring tube. With the motion equation derived by DPM, which includes the impact of inertia, damping, and stiffness force, the mathematical model of the spring tube dynamic stiffness is established. Subsequently, a suitable program for this model is confirmed that guarantees the simulation accuracy while controlling the time consumption. Ultimately, the transient response of the spring tube is also evaluated by a finite element method (FEM). The agreement between the simulation results of the two methods shows that dynamic stiffness based on DPM is suitable for predicting the transient response of the spring tube.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze multi-size power chuck which can chuck work pieces having various sizes automatically and be used suitably to an exclusive product line in the field of automotive industry. Gripping force, accuracy, and stiffness about the chuck are especially considered for the analysis. MSC/NASTRAN software is used for FEM analysis. Also, the effects of centrifugal force which occurs when chuck body rotates and compressive stresses which occur at contacting area in between chuck body and collet are estimated.
