To analyze the behavior of a soil beam under pore water pressure, the results of analytical solutions and finite element analysis (FEM) were compared quantitatively. In contrast to the results of the analytical solution, the horizontal stress obtained from the FEM did not show a symmetrical distribution. On the other hand, the horizontal stress became closer to symmetrical distribution as the number of elements of the soil beam were increased. A comparison of the horizontal stresses from the analytic solution with those obtained from Gaussian points of FEM showed that the magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 3 elements was 6% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the compressive stress from the FEM using the same elements was 37% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. The magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 6 elements was 61% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the compressive stress from the FEM using the elements was 83% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. Vertical stresses, which were obtained from the analytical solution, showed a continuous distribution with the depth of the soil beam, whereas the vertical stresses from the FEM showed a discrete distribution corresponding to each element. The results also showed that the average value of the vertical stresses of each element was close to that of the pore water pressure. A comparison of the vertical displacements computed at the near vertical center line of the soil beam from the FEM with those of the analytical solution showed that the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 3 elements was 35% of the value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 6 elements was 57% of the value of the analytical solution.

Steel bridges, which have been damaged by load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. In general, before the repair welding procedure, cutting procedure carry out. Therefore, the investigating of the behavior of stress generated by cutting is so important for safety of structure. Residual stress produced by gas cutting was analyzed using 2D and 3D thermal elasto plastic FEM. According to the results, the magnitude of temperature was analyzed by 2D FEM is smaller than that was analyzed using the 3D FEM program at the start and end edge of flange. And the magnitude and distribution of residual stress of perpendicular to the cutting line was analyzed by the 2D FEM program was similar to that was analyzed by the 3D FEM program. Therefore, it is possible to predict of cutting stress by 2D and 3D FEM.

This paper proposes a method that involves a combination of FDM and FEM for analyzing casting process. At present, many numerical analysis methods such as FDM, FEM, and BEM are used for solving engineering problems. For a given problem, a specific method that is suited to the problem is adopted; in general, FDM or FVM is favored for problems related to fluid flow or heat transfer, and FEM is adopted in stress analysis. However, there is an increasing need for using a combined method for complex and coupled phenomena analysis. Hence, we proposed a method in which FDM and FEM are coupled in three-dimensional space, and we applied this method to analyze casting process. In the proposed method, solidification and heat transfer was analyzed by using FDM. The field data such as temperature distribution were converted into a format suitable for FEM analysis that was used for calculating thermal stress distribution. Using the proposed method, we efficiently analyzed the analysis process from the viewpoints of work and time.
The stress and deformation behavior safeties of cylindrical hollow rollers have been analyzed by the finite element method, and investigated for over design capability based on the computed results. According to the stress analysis result which is related to the strength of a hollow roller, the maximum stress of 39.8MPa in which is operated near the bearing for supporting a hollow roller structure is overestimated design as 15.9% level compared with a yield strength, 250MPa of a steel material. And the maximum deformation of 0.032mm in which is operated at the middle span of a total length of cylindrical hollow rollers is very small and sufficiently safe compared with a total length and a thickness of a hollow roller. Thus, the FEM computed results for a stress and deformation indicate that a current FEM analysis model of cylindrical hollow rollers is over designed.

Steel bridges, which have been damaged by load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. That is a cause of decreasing the durability of structure. In order to solve these problems, welding repair and strengthening methods can be considered. In general, cutting and welding procedure is carried out during the repair welding. Therefore, the investigation of the behavior of residual stress and deformation generated by cutting and welding is very important for safety of structure. Residual stress and deformation produced by gas cutting and arc welding were analyzed using 2D and 3D thermal elasto-plastic FEM. According to the results, the magnitude of temperature was analyzed by 2D-FEM is smaller than that was analyzed using the 3D-FEM at the start and end edge of flange. And the magnitude and distribution of residual stress of perpendicular direction of the cutting line and welding line was analyzed by the 2D-FEM was similar to that was analyzed by 3D-FEM. Therefore, it is possible to predict cutting and welding residual stress by 2D and 3D FEM.

Stress on plates may increase in the neighborhood the edges or the holes for rivets or bolts. Excessive stress concentration may lead to severe breakage of the plates. Thus, it is important to conduct optimization of arrangement of holes at the design stage. In this paper, accuracy of FEM analysis was examined for such stress concentration. By changing the hole size on a narrow plate, change of the stress concentration factor(K) was investigated. Additionally, the same experiment was conducted about series of multiple holes on plate to investigate interaction between the adjacent holes. Then, the FEM results were compared to the reference predictions respectively. Finally, a method by which simple stress concentrating situations can be optimized, will be suggested. This method was examined by FEM, and showed similar tendency with the expectation. Therefore, this method can be valuable when arranging the holes on a plate.

In this paper, an analysis of the joint that transmits power from the blades to the generator is performed using the FEM (finite element method). The mode shapes and natural frequencies were extracted using experimental modal analysis in order to establish the FEM model. Then, the model was verified by comparing the mode shapes and natural frequencies to those obtained from the ANSYS modal analysis. Dynamic stress analysis was performed at the rated and limited wind speeds considering the wind load and gravity.
The finite element method(FEM) was one of tools used to solve problem of previous Concrete Pavement and was applied to Korea Pavement Research Program Study. This study used the ABAQUS and the fortran analysis program to calculate the critical stress on jointed concrete pavement and compared and analyzed the results by using neural networks and linear regression model. In that case, which are not enough analysises by using FEM programs though many input variables, when the results of FEM with NN and linear regression models are compared, there are some differences. The other cases, which are reduced input variables and a lot of analysises each of them, results of Neural Networks(NN) and linear regression models are simulated to them of FEM. But, the result of NN is more exact than them of linear regression at the (0,0), (1,1). On the results of this study, it is suggested that the calculation of stress using NN is more compatible to Korea Pavement Research Program Study.
