High resolution 5" full color field emission displays with new aging technique

  • High resolution field emission dispplay(FED) devices of 5 inch diagonal in size are fully developped for the applications of near-future flat ppanel dispplays. Under the unique gate-switching drive scheme electron trajectory pprofiles are simulated and tested by considering leakage effects of each ppixel. Uniquely-pprinted sppacer with high asppect ratio are fabricated on real ITO glass for high vacuum ppackaging. In addition new gas aging scheme of stabilizing field emitting array are extensively investigated during the sealing and exhausting pprocess in order to pprevent oxidation effects on the micro tipp. Finally fulll color images of 64 gray scale will be demonstrated.

Characterization of the 2 inch CNT-FED Fabricated by using a Vacuum In-Line Sealing Technology

  • We have fabricated a carbon nanotube field emission display(CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size by using screen printing method and vacuum in-line sealing technology. The sealing temperature of the panel was around 390 $^{\circ}C$ and the leak test was carried out for 72 hrs after sealing process. When field emission properties of fabricated and sealed CNT FED panel were characterized and compared with those of unsealed panel which was located in vacuum chamber of vacuum level similar with the sealed panel, the sealed panel showed more improved field emission properties.

  • A carbon nanotube field emission display (CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size was fabricated through screen printing of a prepared photo-sensitive CNT paste and vacuum in-line sealing technology. After surface treatment of the patterned CNT, only the carbon nanotube tips are uniformly exposed on the surface. The diameter of the exposed CNTs are usually about 20nm. The sealing temperature of the panel is around 390 $^{\circ}C$ and the vacuum level is obtained with $1.4{\times}10^{-5}$torr at the sealing. The field emission properties of the diode type CNT FED panel are characterized. Currently, we are in the process of developing a triode type CNT FED with a self-aligned gate-emitter structure.

보론-도핑된 다이아몬드 박막의 전계방출 특성 (Field emission properties of boron-doped diamond film)

  • 열-필라멘트 CVD 장치를 이용하여 다이아몬드 박막의 증착 조건을 최적화시켰다. $B_4C $ 고체 펠렛을 사용하여 보론두핑된 다이아몬드 박막을 제조하여 그 질적 특성을 알아보고, 전류전압 특성과 전계 방출 측정을 통해 박막의 전계방출소자(field emission display (FED)로의 특성을 조사하였다. 보론 도핑의 양이 증가함에 따라 다이아몬드 결정의 평균 입자 크기가 조금씩 감소하지만 다이아몬드의 질은 소량 도핑인 경우에 크게 바뀌지 않았다. Al/Diamond/p-Si 소자의 전류전압 특성을 조사한 결과 도핑된 다이아몬드 박막의 전류는 도핑되지 않은 박막의 전류에 비해 $10^4$~$10^5$배 정도 증가하였다. 전계방출 특성을 조사한 결과 보론-도핑이 증가함에 따라 점차 낮은 전기장에서 전자를 방출하며, 또한 높은 방출 전류를 나타냈다. 전자가 방출되기 시작하는 onset-field는 펠렛의 수가 2개일 때 15.5 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, 3개일 때 13.6 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, 4개일 때는 11.1 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$. 체계적으로 감소하였다. 도핑의 강도가 세어짐에 따라 Fowler-Nordheim 그래프의 기울기는 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 이로서 보론 도핑으로 인해 유효 장벽 에너지가 감소되어 전자 방출 특성이 향상됨을 알 수 있었다.

Field Emission Stability of Carbon Nanotubes Grown by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized on glass substrates in the different ramp-up heating ambient of vacuum, He, Ar, and $N_{2}$ by thermal chemical vapor deposition. CNTs with higher crystallinity were developed in the buffer gases with faster growth rates than in vacuum. Field emission characteristics were strongly related to the relative position of CNT emitters to the cathode electrodes. The areal-spread emission and instability were overcome by locating the emitters far away from the edges of cathode electrodes. The electrical conditioning of emitters improved their emission uniformity over a large area although it decreased the emission current. This study also discussed the long-term stability of CNT emitters.

In-situ rf treatment of multiwall carbon nanotube with various post techniques for enhanced field emission

  • Well-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared at low temperature of 400 $^{\circ}C$ by utilizing a radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (rf-PECVD) system. The MWCNTs were treated by an external rf plasma source and an ultra-violet laser in order to modify structural defect of carbon nanotube and to ablate possible contamination on carbon nanotube surface. Structural properties of carbon nanotubes were investigated by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transformer Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). In addition, the emission properties of the MWNTs were measured for the application of field emission display (FED) in near future. Various post treatments were found to improve the field emission property of carbon nanotubes.

Development of thin film getters for field emission display

  • For a high efficient field emission display (FED), the specific vacuum conditions below 10-7 Torr should be required. However, because the FED has the geometrical restriction due to its micro size, the thin film getters can be proposed for chemical pumping as a way to reduce impurity gases in the panel. The thin film getters, developed by employing the coating of new materials such as NI or Pt on getter surface, can be used without any activation process and show the enhanced sorption characteristics. Especially, using the Zr (1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) thin film getters with the Pt surface layer, the significant gettering for various active gases could be achieved from 9$\times$10-5 Torr to 1$\times$10-6 Torr or below. this good sorption properties is mainly contributed to the surface coating layer which shows the catalytic effect for gas dissociation and protects the getter materials against oxidation.
