  • Finite element analysis is very important in the design and analysis of mechanical engineering. The process of FEA encompasses shape modeling, mesh generation, matrix solving and post-processing. Some of these processes can be tightly integrated with the current software architectures and data sharing mode. However, complete integration of all the FEA process itself and the integration to the manufacturing processes is almost impossible in the current practice. The barriers to this problem are inconsistent data format and the enterprise-wise software integration technology. In this research, the information model based on STEP AP209 was chosen for handling finite element analysis data. The international standard for the FEA data can bridge the gap between design, analysis and manufacturing processes. The STEP-based FEA system can be further tightly integrated to the distributed software and database environment using CORBA technology. The prototype FEA system DICESS is implemented to verify the proposed concepts.

  • In this study, we examined the feasibility of considering the transverse edge effect of flat type linear induction motor as 2D finite element analysis (FEA) by changing the resistivity of secondary conductor. For this purpose, the 3D FEA analysis results were compared with the 2D FEA analysis results with the change of the resistivity of the secondary conductors. As a result, simply changing the resistivity could not accurately account for the transverse edge effect of LIM because of leakage components that could not be considered by 2D FEA.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) model is presented for simulating the behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (RACFST) beam-columns subjected to constant axial compressive load and cyclically increasing flexural loading. The FEA model was developed based on ABAQUS software package and a displacement-based approach was used. The proposed engineering stress versus engineering strain relationship of core concrete with the effect of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement ratio was adopted in the FEA model. The predicted results of the FEA model were compared with the experimental results of several RACFST as well as the corresponding concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) beam-columns under cyclic loading reported in the literature. The comparison results indicated that the proposed FEA model was capable of predicting the load versus deformation relationship, lateral bearing capacity and failure pattern of RACFST beam-columns with an acceptable accuracy. A parametric study was further carried out to investigate the effect of typical parameters on the mechanism of RACFST beam-columns subjected to cyclic loading.

  • In this study, a fmite element model was developed for analysis of feeding a structure in open loop control The finite element analysis (FEA) can simulate dynamic behavior of the structure of a machine tool rapidly traveling with a screw feeding driving system. The feeding mechanism was implemented with screw element of the FEA tool used in this study. The procedure was developed for the dynamic transient FEA. First, motion parameters such as jerk and velocity were introduced for the structure to be fed in open loop control When its traveling distance was determined, set-points for the distance were generated based on the motion parameters. The set-points were applied to the FE model constructed for the traveling structure. The FEA was executed and evaluated. In this study, the FEA procedure was applied to the column of a machine tool and the dynamic behavior of the column was evaluated. The FEA helps in evaluation of the motion characteristics of a structure. The convergence time of the structure vibration posterior to feeding termination can be estimated and the stiffness of the flexible structure is also evaluated against jerk, and acceleration. It provides the feeding force which is helpful in selection of the feeding motor.

  • AC Superconducting Generators (ACSG) are featured by 3D magnetic flux distribution, which decreases in the direction of axis. For this reason, when ACSG is optimal designed, 3D magnetic field analysis is required. This paper proposes 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results normalized by 3D FEA according to the position of armature coil and the ratio of field coil width to axial length in order to reduce the analysis time. By using the proposed data, the reasonable 3D FEA results of ACSG can be only predicted by 2D FEA results. The validity of the 3D FEA results is verified by comparison with the experimental results of 30kVA superconducting synchronous generator.

  • In this study, a Coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and Finite Element Analysis(FEA) method are used to predict and evaluate the performance of an automotive shock absorber. Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the SIMPLE method and the RNG $k-\varepsilon$ is used to model turbulence. CFD analysis is carried out for different intake valve deflections and piston velocities. The force exerted on the valve in each valve deflection is obtained. The valve deflection-force relationship is investigated by the FEA method. The force exerted on the valve in each piston velocity is obtained with a combination of CFD and FEA results. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data and have shown agreement. Dependence of valve deflection as a function of piston velocity is investigated. Effects of hydraulic oil temperature change on valve behavior are also studied.

  • Most of the heli-decks are constructed with aluminum extrusions. The heli-deck product company supplies structural analysis data to the shipbuilding companies: so, if the shipbuilding co. needs to make up for the weak points in the current system, they only need to analyze the substructure through the FEA. In this paper, we will concentrate on the following issues: analysis of aluminium extrusions regarding the structural analysis data, and check safety about the substructure through the FEA.

  • In this study, an analytical model was developed for one-dimensional finite element analysis (1D FEA) of a spindle system of machine tools and then implemented to automate the FEA as a tool. FEA, with its vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies and modes, was performed using the universal FEA software ANSYS. VBA of EXCEL was used to provide the programming environment for its implementation. This enabled graphic user interfaces (GUIs) to be developed to allow interactions of users with the tool and, in addition, an EXCEL spreadsheet to be linked with the tool for data arrangement. The language of ANSYS was used to develop a code to perform the FEA. It generates an analytical model of the spindle system based on the information at the GUIs and subsequently performs the FEA based on the model. Automation helps identify the near-optimal design of the spindle system with minimum time and efforts.

  • This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of small power brushless DC (BLDC) motor considering the rotor magnet overhang flux. In the driving characteristics analysis using 2D FEA (Finite Element Analysis), the rotor magnet overhang effect can't be considered and it should be neglected. To consider rotor magnet overhang effect, 3D FEA should be required. But 3D FEA requires very long calculation time even though the high specification computer is used. In this paper, the 3D electromagnetic model of BLDC motor is approximated as the 2D electromagnetic model considering overhang effect. In this paper, the concept of overhang coefficient is applied, and the coefficient according to load torque variance is deduced.
