  • As infrastructure ages and traffic load increases, serious public concerns have arisen for the well-being of bridges. The current health monitoring practice focuses on large-scale bridges rather than short span bridges. However, it is critical that more attention should be given to these behind-the-scene bridges. The relevant information about the construction methods and as-built properties are most likely missing. Additionally, since the condition of a bridge has unavoidably changed during service, due to weathering and deterioration, the material properties and boundary conditions would also have changed since its construction. Therefore, it is not appropriate to continue using the design values of the bridge parameters when undertaking any analysis to evaluate bridge performance. It is imperative to update the model, using finite element (FE) analysis to reflect the current structural condition. In this study, a FE model is established to simulate a concrete culvert bridge in New South Wales, Australia. That model, however, contains a number of parameter uncertainties that would compromise the accuracy of analytical results. The model is therefore updated with a neural network (NN) optimisation algorithm incorporating Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to minimise the uncertainties in parameters. The modal frequency and strain responses produced by the updated FE model are compared with the frequency and strain values on-site measured by sensors. The outcome indicates that the NN model updating incorporating MC simulation is a feasible and robust optimisation method for updating numerical models so as to minimise the difference between numerical models and their real-world counterparts.

  • In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the magnetization properties of thin ferromagnetic films under a perturbation from a supplied heat pulse on one surface of the films. The finite difference method was used to extract the local temperature of each layer of the films as a function of time for various heat source power and heating period. Then, with the variation of the films temperature, Metropolis method was used to update the magnetic moment in magnetic grain, under the Ising framework and using the FePt parameters. With the extracted magnetization profiles, the relationship between magnetization relaxation in accordance with relevant heat parameters and films thickness was reported and discussed, with a purpose to form a database for future use.

  • This paper presents results of vibration analysis of a end-winding of large generator for fossil power plant. A finite element analysis using a commercial S/W is performed to calculate alternating electromagnetic forces, mainly of 120㎐ in 60㎐ machines, acting on the end-winding, and then to calculate forced response of the end-winding under electromagnetic forces. Also, this paper presents analytical and experimental modal analysis results of generator end-winding to validate FE model. We calculated forced response of end-winding on 120㎐, double rotating frequency. These results will be used to evaluate structural reliability of end-winding and applied to update model.

  • We present a semi-rigid connection estimation method by using cross modal strain energy method. While rigid or pinned assumptions are adopted for steel frames in traditional modeling via finite element method, the actual behavior of the connections is usually neither. Semi-rigid joints enable connections to be modeled as partially restrained, which improves the quality of the model. To identify the connection stiffness and update the FE model, a newly-developed cross modal strain energy (CMSE) method is extended to incorporate the connection stiffness estimation. Meanwhile, the relations between the correction coefficients for the CMSE method are derived, which enables less modal information to be used in the estimation procedure. To illustrate the capability of the proposed parameter estimation algorithm, a four-story frame structure is demonstrated in the numerical studies. Several cases, including Semi-rigid joint(s) on single connection and on multi-connections, without and with measurement noise, are investigated. Numerical results indicate that an excellent updating is achievable and the connection stiffness can be estimated by CMSE method.

  • This research focuses on finite element model updating and damage assessment of structures at element level based on global nondestructive test results. For this purpose, an optimization system is generated to minimize the structural dynamic parameters discrepancies between numerical and experimental models. Objective functions are selected based on the square of Euclidean norm error of vibration frequencies and modal assurance criterion of mode shapes. In order to update the finite element model and detect local damages within the structural members, modern optimization techniques is implemented according to the evolutionary algorithms to meet the global optimized solution. Using a simulated numerical example, application of genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms are investigated in FE model updating and damage detection problems to consider their accuracy and convergence characteristics. Then, a hybrid multi stage optimization method is presented merging advantages of PSO and ABC methods in finding damage location and extent. The efficiency of the methods have been examined using two simulated numerical examples, a laboratory dynamic test and a high-rise building field ambient vibration test results. The implemented evolutionary updating methods show successful results in accuracy and speed considering the incomplete and noisy experimental measured data.

  • Finite element (FE) model based structural damage detection (SDD) methods play vital roles in effectively locating and quantifying structural damages. Among these methods, structural model updating should be conducted before SDD to obtain benchmark models of real structures. However, the characteristics of updating parameters are not reasonably considered in existing studies. Inspired by the l norm regularization, a novel anti-sparse representation method is proposed for structural model updating in this study. Based on sensitivity analysis, both frequencies and mode shapes are used to define an objective function at first. Then, by adding l norm penalty, an optimization problem is established for structural model updating. As a result, the optimization problem can be solved by the fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (FISTA). Moreover, comparative studies with classical regularization strategy, i.e. the l2 norm regularization method, are conducted as well. To intuitively illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 2-DOF spring-mass model is taken as an example in numerical simulations. The updating results show that the proposed method has a good robustness to measurement noises. Finally, to further verify the applicability of the proposed method, a six-storey aluminum alloy frame is designed and fabricated in laboratory. The added mass on each storey is taken as updating parameter. The updating results provide a good agreement with the true values, which indicates that the proposed method can effectively update the model parameters with a high accuracy.
