The effects of alloying elements on the solidification characteristics, microstructure, thermal conductivity, and tensile strength of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys were investigated for the development of high strength and high thermal conductivity aluminium alloy for die casting. The amounts of Zn and Mg in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys had little effect on the liquidus/solidus temperature, the latent heat for solidification, the energy release for solidification and the fluidity of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys. Thermo-physical modelling of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys by the JMatPro program showed $MgZn_2$, AlCuMgZn and $Al_3Fe$ phases in the microstructure of the alloys. Increased amounts of Mg in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys resulted in phase transformation, such as $MgZn_2{\Rightarrow}MgZn_2+AlCuMgZn{\Rightarrow}AlCuMgZn$ in the microstructure of the alloys. Increased amounts of Zn and Mg in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys resulted in a gradual reduction of the thermal conductivity of the alloys. Increased amounts of Zn and Mg in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys had little effect on the tensile strength of the alloys.
Accurate finite element (FE) models are needed in many applications of Civil Engineering such as health monitoring, damage detection, structural control, structural evaluation and assessment. Model accuracy depends on both the model structure (the form of the equations) and the model parameters (the coefficients of the equations), and can be generally improved through that process of experimental reconciliation known as model updating. However, modelling errors, including (i) errors in the model structure and (ii) errors in parameters excluded from adjustment, may bias the solution, leading to an updated model which replicates measurements but lacks physical meaning. In this paper, an application of ambient-vibration-based model updating to a large-scale benchmark prototype of a building structure is reported in which both types of error are met. The error in the model structure, originating from unmodelled secondary structural elements unexpectedly working as resonant appendages, is faced through a reduction of the experimental modal model. The error in the model parameters, due to the inevitable constraints imposed on parameters to avoid ill-conditioning and under-determinacy, is faced through a multi-model parameterization approach consisting in the generation and solution of a multitude of models, each characterized by a different set of updating parameters. Results show that modelling errors may significantly impair updating even in the case of seemingly simple systems and that multi-model reasoning, supported by physical insight, may effectively improve the accuracy and robustness of calibration.
The paper deals with the finite element modelling of the free vibration and structural behavior of a particular four-floor reinforced concrete structure subjected to static equivalent seismic loads and supported by a shallow foundation system called SNSF (Spider Net System Footing). The two FE models are a simple 2D Matlab model and a detailed 3D model based on solid elastic elements using Altairworks (Hypermesh and Optistruct). Both models can simulate the soil structure interaction. We concentrate on the behavior of a representative cell involving two columns on five levels. The influence of the boundary conditions on the external vertical planes of the domain are duly studied. The Matlab model appears relevant for a primary estimation of frequencies and stiffness of the whole structure under vertical and lateral loads.
Faults such as broken rotor bars, static and dynamic eccentricity are often reported in induction motors. These faults increase the down-time of equipment, which causes major loss of earnings to the industry. This paper presents a result of the finite-element(FE) analysis of air-gap flux variation in induction motors when rotor vibration conditions occur, An accurate modelling and analysis of rotor vibration in the machine are developed using FE software packages, and measuring the flux are made using the search coils. In the FE analysis, an induction motor with 380 [V], 5[HP], 4 Poles, 1742 [rpm] ratings is used. The results of FE analysis can be used for on-line vibration monitoring of the induction motors.

The paper deals with the problem related to the modelling of riveted assemblies for crashworthiness analysis of full-scale complete aircraft structures. Comparisons between experiments and standard FE computations on high-energy accidental situations onto aluminium riveted panels show that macroscopic plastic strains are not sufficiently localised in the FE shells connected to rivet elements. The main reason is related to the structural embrittlement caused by holes, which are currently not modelled. Consequently, standard displacement FE models do not succeed in initialising and propagating the rupture in sheet metal plates and along rivet rows as observed in the experiments. However, the literature survey show that it is possible to formulate super-elements featuring defects that both give accurate singular strain fields and are compatible with standard displacement finite elements. These super-elements can be related to the displacement model of the hybrid-Trefftz principle of the finite element method, which is a kind of domain decomposition method. A feature of hybrid-Trefftz finite elements is that they are mainly used for elastic computations. It is thus proposed to investigate the possibility of formulating a hybrid displacement finite element, including the effects of a hole, dedicated to crashworthiness analysis of full-scale aeronautic structures.
The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites for rehabilitation of steel structures has become vital in recent years. This paper presents an experimental program and a finite element (FE) modelling approach to study the effectiveness of CFRP patch for repair of notch damaged circular hollow sectional (CHS) steel beams. The proposed modeling approach is unique because it takes into account the orthotropic behavior and stacking sequence of composite materials. Parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of initial damage (i.e., notch depth) on flexural performance of the notched beams and effectiveness of the repair system using the validated FE models. Results demonstrated the ability of CFRP patch to repair notched CHS steel beams, restoring them to their original flexural stiffness and strength. The effect of composite patch repair technique on post-elastic stiffness was more pronounced compared to the elastic stiffness. Composite patch repair becomes more effective when the level of initial damage of beam increases.
A rational estimation of moisture distribution in structural concrete is vital for predicting the possible extent and rate of progression of impending degradation processes. The paper proposes a numerical scheme for analysing the evolution of moisture distribution in concrete subjected to wetting-drying exposure caused by intermittent periods of rainfall. The proposed paradigm is based on the stage wise implementation of non-linear finite element (FE) analysis, with each stage representing a distinct phase of a typical wet-dry cycle. The associated boundary conditions have been constituted to realize the influence of various meteorological elements such as rain, wind, relative humidity and temperature on the exposed concrete surface. The reliability of the developed scheme has been demonstrated through its application for the simulation of experimentally recorded moisture profiles reported in published literature. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to study the influence of critical material properties on simulated results. The proposed scheme is vital to the service life modelling of concrete structures in tropical climates which largely remain exposed to the action of alternating rains.
The reliable prediction of elastic vibrations of wetted complex structures, as ships, tanks, offshore structures, propulsion components etc. represent a theoretical and numerical demanding task due to fluid-structure interaction. The paper presented is addressed to the vibration analysis by a combined FE-BE-procedure based on the added mass concept utilizing a direct boundary integral formulation of the potential fluid problem in interior and exterior domains. The discretization is realized by boundary element collocation method using conventional as well as infinite boundary element formulation with analytical integration scheme. Particular attention is devoted to modelling of interior problems with both several separate or communicating fluid domains as well as thin-walled structures wetted on both sides. To deal with this specific kind of interaction problems so-called "virtual" boundary elements in areas of cut outs are placed to satisfy the kinematical conditions in partial connected fluid domains existing in realistic tank systems. Numerical results of various theoretical and practical examples demonstrate the performance of the BE-methodology presented.
In this paper, a new method for detecting rotor vibrations in a squirrel-cage induction motor is proposed. The air-gap flux variation analysis was done using search coils inserted in stator slots when rotor vibration conditions occurs. An accurate modelling and analysis of air-gap flux variation in the induction motor are developed using finite-element (FE) software packages, and treasuring the flux are made using search coils. In the FE analysis and experiment, the three-phase squirrel-gage induction motor with 380 [V], 7.5 [kW], 4 Poles, 1,768 [rpm] ratings is used. The simulation and experiment results can be useful for detecting rotor vibration of the induction motors.
Thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$- and Fe-$Al_2TiO_5$-based Castable Refractories was studied using a central heating technique. Ring type specimens, 10mm thick and 20 and 100mm inner and outer diameters, respectively, were rapidly heated on the internal surface of the centre hole using a high power electrical heating element. The temperature field was measured experimentally and modelled using finite element analysis (FEA). The thermal stress field was also modelled using FEA. A radial notch was introduced to the ring specimens to enable calculation of the thermal stress intensity factors (SIF). A special LVDT device was incorporated in the thermal shock tester to monitor crack mouth opening displacement (COD). The thermal shock fracture initiation and crack propagation behaviour of the castable refractories were ascertained using the COD measurements and the fracture mechanics analysis data.
