  • A Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) is applied to determine three-dimensional fiber orientation states in injection-molded short fiber composites. Since the CLSM optically sections the composites, more than two planes either on or below the surface of composites can be obtained. Therefore, three dimensional fiber orientation states are determined without destruction. To predict the orientation states, velocity and temperature fields are calculated by using a hybrid FEM/FDM method. The change of orientation state during packing stage is also considered by employing a compressible Hele-Shaw model. The predicted orientation states show good agreement with measured ones. However, some differences are found at the end of cavity. They may result from other effects, which are not considered in the numerical analysis.

  • This present study has dealt with the natural convection of water in a rectangular vessel which has cooling point at the center of itself with numerically. The finite difference method (FDM) is presented for the two-dimensional computer simulation of water controlled by natural convection and heat conduction. According to this study, It is cleared that the overturn of density is clearly existed at the temperature of $4[^{\circ}C]$ and that was compared with experimental result. Also the change of natural convection is known from the streamlines and isotherms. Most of all. It is cleared that the overturn of natural convection is changed with time caused by the fact that the temperature and density relationship of water.

  • Electrostatic Precipitators( EP ) are widely used in industry for controlling the emission of particulate pollutant Recently, a number of researches have been conducted to solve performance and reliability problems of EP, As a result of researches in the laboratory and of pilot scale, a technology of wide-pitch-spacing has been successfully applied to full scale units. It has been known that the wide-pitch-spacing can reduce the capital cost of newly installed precipitators, and the cost of rebuilding existing uints. In this paper, a systematic study was performed to develop a wide-pitch electrostatic precipitator. The study includes experimental and numerical work on the following : Particle collection characteristics for a bench-scale unit; gas flow characteristics( temperature and velocity distributions): other EP operating variables such as electric Power supply/control. The results are applied directly to design of wide-pitch-spacing EP and the developed numerical model was found to be a good argreement with the experimental results. The EHD simulation program is necessary to design the high efficiency EP.

  • Chloride induced corrosion is a concern that governs the durability of concrete structures in marine environments, especially in tidal environments. During the service lives of concrete structures, internal cracks in the concrete cover may appear due to imposed loads, accelerating chloride penetration because of the simultaneous action of environmental and service structural loads. This paper investigated the effects of cyclic flexural loads on chloride diffusion characteristics of plain concretes, and proposed a model to predict the chloride penetration into plain concretes subjected to both tidal environments and different cyclic flexural load levels. Further, a new experiment was performed to verify the model. Results of the model using Finite Difference Method (FDM) showed that the durability of concretes in tidal environments was reduced as cyclic flexural load levels, SR, increased, and the modeling results fitted well with the experimental results.

  • Althouah there have been many attempts to control weld quality in resistance spot welding processes, design method for an on-line feedback controller based upon process dynamics has not been suggested. This is due to the fact that the resistance spot welding is a highly complicated process, whice involves the interaction of electrical, thermal, mechanical and metallurgical phenomena. In this paper, an optimal control method based on FDM model with shunt effect is presented, which can regulate the nugget size, at the same time minimizing the control heat input. Optimal PI gain of the controller were determined by numerical optimization. Simulation results show that, as a result of the proposed optimal control, the weld nugget can be made to approach a desired nugget size with less control heat input than that required for the conventional spot welding process in the face of the shunt effect.

  • This paper presents a two-dimensional horizontal implicit model to general circulation in estuaries and coastal seas. The model is developed in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates system, using the Interpolating Matrix Method (IMM), in combination with a technique of multi-domain. In the propose model, the Saint-Venant equations are solved by a splitting-up technique, in the successive steps; convection, diffusion and wave propagation. The ability of the proposed model to deal with full scale nature is illustrated by the interpretation of a dye-tracing experiment in the Gironde estuary.

  • An on-line measurement of the workpiece hardened depth in laser surface hardening processes is very much difficult to achieve, since the hardening process occurs in depth wise direction. In this paper, the hardened depth is estimated using a multilayered neural network. Input data of the neural network are the surface temperatures at arbitrary chosen five surface points, laser power and traveling speed of laser beam torch. To simulate the actual hardening process, a finite difference method(FDM) is used to model the process. Since this model yields the calculation results of the temperature distribution around the workpiece volume in the vicinity of the laser torch, this model is used to obtain the network's training data and laser to evaluate the performance of the neural network estimator. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can be used to estimate the hardened depth with reasonable accuracy.

  • Surface of rapid prototype has inevitably stair-stepping error, which is attributed to the continuous building process of 2 dimensional area. In this study, rounded edge model was established to estimate the roughness of inclined surface which has stair-stepping error. To investigate the roughness of rapid prototypes, specimens that have various surface inclinations were manufactured by various types of RP machines. As the surface inclination increased, the roughness of the specimens manufactured by SL, FDM, or LOM process decreased, which coincides with the simulation results. However, surface roughness of 3DP specimen was almost independent of the inclination. Furthermore, as the angle of surface increased, roughness of poly-jet specimen also increased, which is attributed to the frictional behavior between writing head and scanned area.

  • "Ondol" have been used in residential buildings for several thousands years in Korea. The traditional "Ondol" heating system of Korea has changed into the radiant heating system with piping embedded in floors or slabs. This study reports the results of transient experiments performed on a radiant heating system and enclosure. The paper presents some details of the thermal response of slab-heated buildings to varying patterns of heat input. Furthermore, I'll compare the results of experimentation with the ones of the numerical simulation by using the explicit and implicit forms of the finite difference methods (FDM). The study has contributed to testify the feasibility of numerical analysis, and the understanding of the transient behavior of radiant heating panels and enclosure exposed to this type of heating system.
