  • The thermal deformation of a machine tool spindle influences the performance of the manufacturing systems for precision products. In this research, thermal analysis of a high speed machine tool spindle with the rolling bearing and the built-in motor is carried out by using Finite Difference Method. The thermal boundary conditions describing the heat generation in the bearing and built-in motor are considered in the simulation. And various convective boundary conditions are assumed with the empirical formula in the references. From the simulation results, the characteristics of each element affecting the dynamic thermal behaviour of the machine tool spindle system have been clarified. Therefore, this model can be well applied to the future development of the high speed spindle systems.

  • A new silicon micro flow sensor with multiple temperature sensing elements was proposed and fabricated in considering wide range flow velocity measuring device. Thermal mass flow sensor measures the asymmetry of temperature profile around the heater which is modulated by the fluid flow. A micro mass flow sensor was normally composed of a central heater and a pair of temperature sensing elements around it. A new 2-D wide range micro flow sensor structure with three pairs of temperature sensing elements and a central heater was proposed and numerically simulated by Finite Difference Formulation to confirm the feasibility of the wide flow range sensor structure. To confirm the simulation result, the new flow sensor was fabricated on silicon substrate and the basic flow sensing properties of the sensor were measured.

  • The goal of this study is to develop a simulation model of the pollutant dispersion in vehicle tunnels, which can be utilized to optimize the tunnel ventilation system. Contaminant dispersion is modelled using a FDM solution of advective diffusion equation. Taking into consideration the local vehicle emission rates by year, it is user-oriented and its logic is generalized. Therefore, differences in the ventilation scheme can be easily adapted. The results of its application to a urban tunnel show that the relative errors are 1.1~6.8% for the natural velocity, 1.3% for the traffic-induced velocity and 2.9% for the total air quantity. Simulated CO concentrations along the entire tunnel show about 13% of the relative error.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear behavior of ultrasonic wave in partially degraded material is considered. For this aim, FDM(finite difference method) model for the nonlinear wave equation was developed with the restriction to the 1-D longitudinal wave motion and how the partial degradation in material contributes to the detected nonlinear parameter was analyzed quantitatively. In order to verify the rightness of this simulation method, the relation between the detected nonlinear parameter and the continuous distribution of degradation obtained from simulation was compared with experiment results and the simulation and experiment results showed similar tendency. It can be known from simulation result that the degree of degradation, the range of degradation and the continuous distribution of degradation have strong correlation with the detected nonlinear parameter. As it was possible in these simulations that only special part is assumed as degraded one, the quantitative evaluation of partially degraded material may be obtained by using this method.

  • A two-dimensional numerical analysis progranl, called SOMOS ( simulation of MO5 transistors), has been developed for the simulation of MOSFET's with various channel lengths and bias conditions. The finite difference approximation of the fundamental equa-tions are formulated using Newton's method for Poisson's equation and the divergence theorem for the continuity equation. For the solution of the lincariBed equations, SOR (successive over relaxation) method and Gummel's algorithm have been employed, The total simulation time for oar operating point is varying between 30 sec. and 4 min. on VAX 11/780 depending on bias conditions, The nonuniform mesh was generated and refined automatically to account for various bias values and the potential distributions.

  • The structure and composition of Cr-nitrides formed on an electroplated hard Cr layer during an ionnitriding process was analyzed, and the growth kinetics of the Cr-nitrides was examined as a function of the ion-nitriding temperature and time in order to establish a computer simulation model prediction the growth behavior of the Cr-nitride layer. The Cr-nitrides formed during the ion-nitriding at $550~770^{\circ}C$ were composed of outer CrN and inner $Cr_2$N layers. A nitrogen diffusion model in the multi-layer based on fixed grid FDM (Finite Difference Method) was applied to simulate the growth kinetics of Cr-nitride layers. By measuring the thickness of each Cr-nitride layer as a function of the ion-nitriding temperature and time, the activation energy for growth of each Cr-nitride was determined; 82.26 KJ/mol for CrN and 83.36 Kj/mol for $Cr_2$N. Further, the nitrogen diffusion constant was determined in each layer; $9.70$\times$10^{-12}$ /$m^2$/s in CrN and $2.46$\times$10^{-12}$ $m^2$/s in $Cr_2$N. The simulation on the growth kinetics of Cr-nitride layers was in good agreements with the experimental results at 550~72$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Computer simulation of the solidification grain structure was applied to the casting process by using CA-DFDM. The Direct Finite Difference Method (DFDM) for temperature field calculation and latent heat treatment was coupled with Cellular Automaton (CA) method for the grain growth. 2-dimensional simulation of the solidification grain structures and calculation of the concentration fields were carried out and the calculated concentration distributions were compared with exact solution. Castings having complex geometries such as turbine blades were applied for 3-dimensional CA-DFDM. Effects of grain selector and mold extraction speed on the solidification grain structures in the turbine blade were examined.

  • Yhis paper describes a fault diagnosis simulation of the Real-Time Multiple Fault Dignosis System (RTMFDS) for forcasting faults in a system and deciding current machine state from signal information. Comparing with other diagnosis system for single fault, the system developed deals with multiple fault diagnosis, comprising two main parts. One is a remotesignal generating and transimission terminal and the other is a host system for fault diagnosis. Signal generator generate the random fault signal and the image information, and send this information to host. Host consists of various modules and agents such as Signal Processing Module(SPM) for sinal preprocessing, Performence Monotoring Module(PMM) for subsystem performance monitoring, Trigger Module(TM) for multi-triggering subsystem fault diagnosis, Subsystem Fault Diagnosis Agent(SFDA) for receiving trigger signal, formulating subsystem fault D\ulcornerB and initiating diagnosis, Fault Diagnosis Module(FDM) for simulating component fault with Hierarchical Artificial Neural Network (HANN), numerical models and Hofield network,Result Agent(RA) for receiving simulation result and sending to Treatment solver and Graphic Agent(GA). Each agent represents a separate process in UNIX operating system, information exchange and cooperation between agents was doen by IPC(Inter Process Communication : message queue, semaphore, signal, pipe). Numerical models are used to deseribe structure, function and behavior of total system, subsystems and their components. Hierarchical data structure for diagnosing the fault system is implemented by HANN. Signal generation and transmittion was performed on PC. As a host, SUN workstation with X-Windows(Motif)is used for graphic representation.

  • Green water load is an important parameter to be considered in designing a modern ship or offshore structures like FPSO and FSRU. In this research, a numerical simulation method for green water phenomenon is introduced. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are used as governing equations. The equations are calculated using Finite Difference Method(FDM) in rectangular staggered grid system. To increase the numerical accuracy near the body, the Cartesian cut cell method is employed. The nonlinear free-surface during green water incident is defined by Marker-density method. The green waters on a box in regular waves are simulated. The simulation results are compared with other experimental and computational results for verification. To check the applicability to moving ship, the green water of the ship which is towed by uniform force in regular wave, is simulated. The ship is set free to heave and to surge.
