Pseudomonas fluorescens GL20 is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium that produces a large amount of hydroxamate siderophore under iron-limited conditions. The strain GL20 considerably inhibited the spore germination and hyphal growth of a plant pathogenic fungus, Fusarium solani, when iron was limited, significantly suppressed the root-rot disease on beans caused by F. solani, and enhanced the plant growth. The mechanism for the beneficial effect of strain GL20 on the disease suppression was due to the siderophore production, evidenced by mutant strains derived from the strain. Analysis of the outer membrane protein profile revealed that the growth of strain GL20 induced the synthesis of specific iron-regulated outer membrane proteins with molecular masses of 85- and 90 kDa as the high-affinity receptors for the ferric siderophore. In addition, a cross-feeding assay revealed the presence of multiple inducible receptors for heterologous siderophores in the strain. In order to induce increased efficacy and potential in biological control of plant disease, a siderophore-overproducing mutant, GL20-S207, was prepared by NTG mutagenesis. The mutant GL20-S207 produced nearly 2.3 times more siderophore than the parent strain. In pot trials of beans with F. solani, the mutant increased plant growth up to 1.5 times compared with that of the parent strain. These results suggest that the plant growth-promoting P. fluorescens GL20 and the genetically bred P. fluorescens GL20-S207 can play an important role in the biological control of soil-borne plant diseases in the rhizosphere.

This paper presents a study on the mechanical behavior of buried pipelines crossing faults using experimental and numerical methods. A self-made soil-box was used to simulate normal fault, strike-slip fault and oblique slip fault. The effects of some important parameters, including the displacement and type of fault, the buried depth and the diameter of pipe, on the deformation modes and axial strain distribution of the buried pipelines crossing faults was studied in the experiment. Furthermore, a finite element analysis (FEA) model of spring boundary was developed to investigate the performance of the buried pipelines crossing faults, and FEA results were compared with experimental results. It is found that the axial strain distribution of those buried pipelines crossing the normal fault and the oblique fault is asymmetrical along the fault plane and that of buried pipelines crossing the strike-slip fault is approximately symmetrical. Additionally, the axial peak strain appears near both sides of the fault and increases with increasing fault displacement. Moreover, the axial strain of the pipeline decreases with decreasing buried depth or increasing ratios of pipe diameter to pipe wall thickness. Compared with the normal fault and the strike-slip fault, the oblique fault is the most harmful to pipelines. Based on the accuracy of the model, the regression equations of the axial distance from the peak axial strain position of the pipeline to the fault under the effects of buried depth, pipe diameter, wall thickness and fault displacement were given.

Purpose: The shrinkage of dental resin cement may cause several clinical problems such as distortion that may jeopardize the accurate fit to the prepared tooth and internal stress within the restorations. It is important to know the polymerization shrinkage-strain of dental resin cement to reduce clinical complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the polymerization shrinkage-strain kinetics of six commercially available dental resin cements. Material and methods: Three self-cure resin cements (Fujicem, Superbond, M-bond) and three dual-cure resin cements (Maxcem, Panavia-F, Variolink II) were investigated. Time dependent polymerization shrinkage-strain kinetics of the materials were measured by the Bonded-disk method as a function of time at $23^{\circ}C$, with values particularly noted at 1, 5, 10, 30, 60, 120 min after mixing. Five recordings were taken for each materials. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc test at the significance level of 0.05. Results: Polymerization shrinkage-strain values were 3.72%, 4.19%, 4.13%, 2.44%, 7.57%, 2.90% for Fujicem, Maxcem, M bond, Panavia F, Superbond, Variolink II, respectively at 120 minutes after the start of mixing. Panavia F exhibited maximum polymerization shrinkage-strain values, but Superbond showed minimum polymerization shrinkage-strain values among the investigated materials (P < .05). There was no significant differences of shrinkage-strain value between Maxcem and M bond at 120 minutes after the start of mixing (P > .05). Most shrinkage of the resin cement materials investigated occurred in the first 30 minutes after the start of mixing. Conclusion: The onset of polymerization shrinkage of self-cure resin cements was slower than that of dual-cure resin cements after mixing, but the net shrinkage strain values of self-cure resin cements was higher than that of dual-cure resin cements at 120 minutes after mixing. Most shrinkage of the dental resin cements occurred in the first 30 minutes after mixing.
Glutamate availability in the argF-argR-proB${\Delta}$ strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum was increased by addition of glutamate to the cell or inactivation of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity and simultaneous overexpression of the pyruvate carboxylase activity to assess its effect on L-ornithine production. When glutamate was increased in an L-ornithine-producing strain, the production of L-ornithine was not changed. This unexpected result indicated that the intracellular concentration and supply of glutamate is not a rate-limiting step for the L-ornithine production in an L-ornithine-producing strain of C. glutamicum. In contrast, overexpression of the L-ornithine biosynthesis genes (argCJBD) resulted in approximately 30% increase of L-ornithine production, from 12.73 to 16.49 mg/g (dry cell weight). These results implied that downstream reactions converting glutamate to L-ornithine, but not the availability of glutamate, is the rate-limiting step for elevating L-ornithine production in the argF-argR-proB${\Delta}$ strain of C. glutamicum.
An actinomycete strain was isolated from northern part of Bangladesh and identified as a new Streptomyces species on the basis of its morphological, biochemical, cultural characteristics and 16S rRNA data. Attempts were made to optimize the culture conditions for the production of antimicrobial metabolites by this strain. Antimicrobial metabolites production was started after 7 days of incubation of culture broth and reached its maximum levels after 10 days and thereafter gradually decreased. The maximum production of antimicrobial metabolites was obtained when the culture medium pH was adjusted to 8. The optimum temperature for antimicrobial metabolites production was $39^{\circ}C$, indicated the new strain as mesophilic organism. Basel medium supplemented with glucose and yeast extract as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, was proved to be the best for the production of bioactive metabolites. Maximum production of bioactive metabolites was when NaCl concentration was 1% and among different minerals tested, $K_2HPO_4$ and NaCl showed positive influence on antibiotic production by the strain.
Lactobacillus plantarum strain KK3 with tannase activity was isolated from Gochunipkimchi (red pepper leaf kimchi) and showed a high antagonistic activity against five kinds of food pathogens. Strain KK3 secreted antibacterial compound into culture medium and 24-h culture in MRS broth at $30^{\circ}C$ was enough for the antibacterial compound production. The crude antibacterial compound prepared from culture supernatant inhibited the growth of some Gram-negative bacteria and Bacillus cereus but not Listeria monocytogenes. The antibacterial activity was sensitive to proteinase K treatment, confirming its proteinaceous nature (bacteriocin). The crude bacteriocin was active in the pH range 3.5-8.5 and extremely stable after 15 min of heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C$. The strain KK3 produced equally active bacteriocin in Chinese cabbage juice as it produced in MRS broth.
The profenofos-resistant P-Pro strain of house fly (Muscn domestica L.) was derived from the pyraclofos-resistant strain by selecting with profenofos for 7 generations. The resistance was shown to be incompletely dominant by the reciprocal crosses between the resistant and susceptible strains. Linkage group analysis for the dominant factor responsible for this resistance was carried out by the F, male-backcross method, using susceptible multi-chromosomal marker strain. The major factors for profenofos resistance were located on the second and the fifth chromosome and the other chromosomes had a little effect on the development of this resistance. The male determining factor (M) was linked to the third chromosome in this strain.
Amorphous FeCoSiB films with high saturation magnetostriction and excellent soft magnetic properties have been studied to evaluate their strain sensitivity. Films were subjected to a strain by bending of their substrates, which caused a change in the magnetic anisotropy of films via magnetoelastic coupling. Films were exhibited a figure of merit $F=({\Delta}{\mu}/{\mu})/{\varepsilon}$ (change in film permeability $\mu$ per unit strain $\varepsilon$) of $1.2{\times}10^5$, which is comparable with that of amorphous ribbons. To make a study of application of magnetostrictive films as strain sensor elements, we have prepared a micro-patterned film by means of the photolithography and ion milling processes. Impedance change in the patterned films, when strain was applied, was measured over the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. Reflecting a large value of figure of merit F, a variation of 46% impedance of films was shown at 100 MHz frequency when a strain of $300{\times}10^{-6}$ was applied.

Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions such as high impact loading are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to varying dynamically leaded mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique with a special experimental apparatus can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate ]ending conditions. In this paper, the dynamic deformation behavior of a brass under both high strain rate compressive loading conditions has been determined using the SHPB technique.
Purpose: This study was designed to compare the amount of polymerization shrinkage of dual-cure resin cements according to different polymerization modes and to determine the effect of light activation on the degree of polymerization. Materials and methods: Four kinds of dual-cure resin cements were investigated: Smartcem 2, Panavia F 2.0, Clearfil SA Luting and Zirconite. Each material was tested in three different polymerization modes: self-polymerization only, immediate light polymerization and 5 minutes-delayed light polymerization. The time-dependent polymerization shrinkage-strain was evaluated for 30 minutes by Bonded-disk method at $37^{\circ}C$. Five recordings of each material with three different modes were taken. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison Scheffe′test (${\alpha}$=.05). Results: All materials, except Panavia F 2.0, exhibited the highest polymerization shrinkage-strain through delayed light-activated polymerization. No significant difference between light activation modes was found with Panavia F 2.0. All materials exhibited more than 90% of polymerization rate in the immediate or delayed light activated group within 10 minutes. Conclusion: As a clinical implication of this study, the application of delayed light activation mode to dual-cure resin cements is advantageous in terms of degree of polymerization.
