Human Apolipoprotein E2 Transgenic Mice Show Lipid Accumulation in Retinal Pigment Epithelium and Altered Expression of VEGF and bFGF in the Eyes

  • We investigated the human apolipoprotein E2 (apoE2) transgenic mouse as an animal model system for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Transgenic mice expressing human apoE2 and C57BL/6J mice were fed normal chow or a high-fat diet for 4 weeks. Eyes were collected from the mice and lipid deposits in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were assessed using electron microscopy. The expressions of apoE, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and pigment-epithelium derived factor (PEDF), which are molecular markers for angiogenesis, were assessed with immunohistochemistry. Eyes from apoE2 mice, regardless of diet, contained lipid accumulation in RPE under electron microscopy, whereas control C57BL/6J eyes did not. Lipid accumulation was found predominantly in the RPE and the Bruch's membrane and increased in the eyes of apoE2 mice after one month of a high-fat diet ($8{\pm}2\;per\;50{\mu}m^2$ for normal chow and $11{\pm}2\;per\;50\;{\mu}m^2,\;p<0.05)$. ApoE expression was similar in the apoE2 and control mice; however, VEGF and bFGF were overexpressed in the retinal pigment epithelium of apoE2 eyes compared with control eyes, and PEDF expression was slightly decreased. These expression patterns of VEGF, bFGF, and PEDF suggest angiogenesis is progressing in apoE2 eyes. In conclusion, the eyes of apoE2 mice develop typical lipid accumulations, a common characteristic of AMD, making them a suitable animal model for AMD. The expression profile of VEGF and bFGF on the retinal pigment epithelium suggests that apoE2 may induce neovascularization by altering angiogenic cytokines.

무수정체안과 인공수정체안에 대한 Mitomycin C를 이용한 일차 섬유주절제술의 효과 (Trabeculectomy Using Mitomycin C in Aphakic and Pseudophakic Eyes)

  • 녹내장으로 수술적 치료가 필요한 무수정체안과 인공수정체안 환자들에게서 Mitomycin C(MMC)를 사용한 섬유주절제술을 시행하고 유용성을 알아보고자 하였다. 1994년 5월부터 2002년 2월까지 영남대학교 의과대학 부속병원 안과에서 무수정체안과 인공수정체안에 녹내장 치료로 MMC의 국소접촉법을 이용한 섬유주 절제술을 시행하고 6개월 이상 추적관찰 가능 하였던 45명 51안을 대상으로 녹내장의 유형, 기왕의 안수술, 백내장수술의 종류, 수정체 후낭의 상태, 인공수정체 유뮤에 따른 성공률과 수술 실패의 위험인자 및 합병증 등을 의무기록을 바탕으로 후향적으로 조사하였다. 수술 성공 여부의 기준은 술 후 안압하강제 사용에 관계없이 술 후 최종 안압이 21 mmHg이하이며 시력상실이 없는 경우를 성공으로 판정하였다. MMC를 사용한 일차 섬유주절제술 후 평균 관찰 기간은 27.7개월이었으며 수술 성공률은 70.6%(36안/51안)이었다. Kaplan-Meier 생존분석을 이용한 누적 성공률은 3개월에 98.0%, 6개월에 94.1%, 12개월에 91.9%, 24개월에 83.4%, 36개월에 75.5%로서 보고된 고식적 섬유주 절제술의 성공률보다 높았다. 술 전 안압이 30mmHg 미만으로 낮았던 환자들과 이전 백내장 수술을 제외한 안 수술의 기왕력이 없었던 환자들에게 의미있게 수술 성공률이 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 술 후 합병증으로는 전방출혈과 맥락막박리가 각 4안에서, 저안압이 3안, 그리고 얕은 전방과 안내염이 각 1안에서 발생하였다. 결론적으로 무수정체안과 인공수정체안의 녹내장에서 MMC 섬유주절제술은 기존 보고된 방수유출장치술의 수술 성공률에 비해 낮지 않으면서도 합병증이 적다는 점에서 방수유출장치삽입술에 앞서 우선적으로 선택할 수 있는 유용한 수술 방법이라고 생각된다.

양측성 망막분지정맥폐쇄의 임상적 고찰 (Clinical Observation of the Bilateral Branch Vein Occlusion)

  • 1984년 12월부터 1992년 1월까지 망막분지정맥폐쇄환자 4명 8안을 대상으로 임상적 고찰을 하였다. 발병연령은 36세에서 65세까지였고, 반대쪽 눈에 발병하기까지는 3년 이하가 3명이였으며 여자가 3명이였다. 동반질환은 고혈압이 3명으로 가장 많았다. 합병증으로 망막신생혈관이 6안(75%)에서 발생하였으며 초자체 출혈을 갖는 5안중 3안에서 초자체 절제술을 시행하였다. 고혈압이 있는 60대 까지의 여성에서 발생한 망막분지정맥폐쇄는 반대쪽 눈에 대한 주의 깊은 추적검사가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

취학전 아동의 굴절상태 실태조사 (Research on the Refractive State Screening in Preschool Children)

  • 본 조사는 취학전 아동(7세)의 굴절상태의 실태를 알아보기 위해 익산시 소재 병설유치원 3곳 아동 123명(246안)을 대상으로 타각적, 자각적 굴절검사를 실시하여 나안시력 분포, 굴절이상의 종류별 분포, 난시안의 종류별 분포, 시력검사 경험 유 무, 안위이상을 분석하였다. 1. 나안시력이 0.7이하인 아동은 64안(26%)으로 나타났다. 2. 근시성 굴절이상안(단순근시 및 근시성 난시)과 원시성 굴절이상안(단순원시 및 원시성난시)이 각각 26.55%로 나타났다. 3. 난시의 종류별 분포는 직난시 85.8%, 도난시 8.9%, 사난시 5.3%로 나타났다. 4. 시력검사를 받은 경험이 있는 아동은 13.8%로 나타났다. 5. 사위를 가진 아동은 없었다.

남녀고등학생의 근시성 난시안에 대한 연구 (A Study of Myopic Astigmatism Eyes on The Highschool Students)

  • 17세에서 19세까지의 남녀고등학생 총 근시안 197안에 대해서 근시성 난시안을 조사하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 전체 근시안중 난시안은 남학생이 61%, 여학생은 57%의 결과를 얻었다. 2. $-100{\geq}$cyl>0.00 난시안은 82%의 분포를 나타냈고 $-1.5{\geq}$cyl>-1.00 범위의 난시안은 12%의 난시안이 조사되어 이들 범위에서 전체 난시안 94%가 조사되었다. 3. -2.00>cyl 범위의 난시안은 6%의 비율로 조사 되었다. 4. 전체 난시중 직난시는 81%로 조사되었고 도난시와 사시는 각각 5%, 14%로 조사되었다.

Characteristics of Sitting Balance and Trunk Muscle Endurance in Patients With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the static balance in a sitting position between a group with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and a normal aged-matched group. Forty-nine subjects were included in this study. Thirty-one healthy subjects and eighteen AIS subjects were participated. Each group was tested with the Lumbar Trunk Muscle Endurance Test (LTMET) and Balance Performance Monitor (BPM). The parameters for static balance were sway area, sway path, mean balance, maximum velocity, anterior-posterior angle, and left-right angle of each group with eyes opened and closed. Results from the LTMET showed significantly more increase in the normal group than in the AIS group in the flexor and extensor endurance. The BPM tested showed significantly difference beteen the groups in parameters of sitting balance such as maximum velocity and anterior-posterior sway angle. For the AIS subjects, there were no significant differences in all parameters of sitting balance between eyes opened and eyes closed. In comparisons of the groups with eyes opened there were no significant differences in all parameters of sitting balance. In comparisons of the groups with eyes closed there were significant differences in the sway area, maximum velocity, anterior-posterior sway angle and left-right sway angle. These results suggest that the AIS group relies much more on proprioception than on vision, and develops compensatory passive postures of the spine. Further study is needed to measure many AIS patients with morphologic and electromyographic data for clinical application.

Navarro 모형안을 이용한 노안 정밀모형안의 전산모사 (Simulations of Finite Schematic Eyes for Presbyopia Using the Navarro Eye Model)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 Navarro 정밀모형안을 이용하고 임상데이터를 적용시킨 새로운 노안 모형안을 전산모사하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 방법: 40세, 50세, 60세 남성을 대상으로 선행연구로부터 광학적 매개변수에 관한 임상데이터를 수집하고, ZEMAX 광학프로그램을 이용하여 노안 정밀모형안을 설계하였다. 결과: 설계된 노안 정밀모형안들의 노안 진행 과정과 특징들이 선행연구들의 임상데이터들과 잘 일치하였다. 결론: Navarro 모형안을 기반으로 하여 임상자료와 상응하는 노안 정밀모형안을 새롭게 설계할 수 있었다.

개의 눈물착색증후군(Tear Staining Syndrome) 치료를 위한 Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole for the Treatment of Tear Staining Syndrome in Dogs)

  • 22 dogs (31 eyes) that had treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for tear staining syndrome at Snoopy Pet Clinic from October 2000 to September 2002 were reviewed. Of the 22 dogs, 12 were female and 10 male. Their mean (${\pm}$ SD) age was 3.5 (${\pm}\;1.3$) years. The breeds of the dogs consisted of Maltese (8 dogs), Shih tzu (6 dogs), Poodle (5 dogs), Yorkshire terrier (2 dogs), and Mixed (1 dog). The dogs received 30 mg/kg trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole perorally twice daily for two to six weeks. 26 (19 dogs) of the 31 eyes (22 dogs) recovered completely and did not show relapse at $26{\sim}30$ weeks after treatment. Any complications did not observed. Five eyes of three dogs were not cured. Two eyes (one dogs) of them had not response to medicament and three eyes (two dogs) recurrence but the clinical signs decreased. It was considered that the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was effective for the treatment in dogs with tear staining syndrome.

The Effects of Proprioceptor Training and Vestibular Organ Training on Balance Ability of Adults

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis of the effect of proprioceptor training and vestibular organ training for balance ability. The subjects was consist of two different subjects group, proprioceptor training group and vestibular organ training group. Proprioceptor training group consisted of 10 subjects and vestibular organ training group consisted of 10 subjects. Training was performed 3 times per week, 30 minutes per day, for 3 weeks. Balance ability analysis was performed using Romberg's one leg standing test and BT4 when opened eyes and closed eyes. The analysis results were as follows. There was no significant differences in balance after the training in both groups when they opened their eyes(p<.05). But there was significant differences in balance after the training in both groups when they closed their eyes(p<.05). And there was no significant difference in balance after the training between the proprioceptor training group and the vestibular organ training group when they closed their eyes(p<.05). Given the above results, proprioceptor training and vestibular organ training enhanced balance but there was no significant difference between the two methods.

  • Most spiders have four pairs of simple eyes. A few families of the spider have their developed eyes to an extent visual cues make up a significant of information to response from the external stimuli. Most spiders respond to the external stimuli around them. Specially, they are very sensitive to vibrations from the air, the ground, their webs, or even the surface of water. The present study was undertaken to examine the evolutionary development and function of eye with the observation of visual ultrastructure of Atypus coreanus Kim, 1985 using the electron microscopy. They have weak mobility, limited territory and low developed eyes. Atypus coreanus was collected from Mt. Ungil, Namyangju-gun, Kyonggi province. The fine structure of these eyes was examined by electron microscopy, and prepard by teasing method for scanning electron microscopic observation. As a result, the eyes of Atypus coreanus was composed of cornea, lens, vitreous body, retina, and rhabdome.
