Clinical Study on a Case of Idiopathic Oculomotor Nerve Palsy Patient (특발성 동안신경마비로 인한 안검하수와 안구운동장애 환자의 치험1례)

  • Oculomotor nerve palsy is a disorder which causes eyeball movement trouble, dipleopia, dizziness and eyelid ptosis. It is caused by aneurysm, mass, truma, intracranial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, infection and so on. But sometimes we can't establish the cause. We report a case of oculomotor nerve palsy associated with spleen energy(脾氣). We treated a patient with herb medicine and acupuncture. This study suggests that oriental medicine theraphy has a good effect on the oculomotor nerve palsy.

Study of Eye Blinking to Improve Face Recognition for Screen Unlock on Mobile Devices

  • In recently, eye blink recognition, and face recognition are very popular and promising techniques. In some cases, people can use the photos and face masks to hack mobile security systems, so we propose an eye blinking detection, which finds eyes through the proportion of human face. The proposed method detects the movements of eyeball and the number of eye blinking to improve face recognition for screen unlock on the mobile devices. Experimental results show that our method is efficient and robust for the screen unlock on the mobile devices.

  • Cyclopia is a congenital ocular abnormality in which two orbits are fused together due to an arrest in the normal process of embryonic tissue development. Reported here is a case of cyclopia in a calf observed from the uterus of cow slaughtered in an abattoir in Korea on March 24, 2004. The calf possessed a spherical-shaped head and only one centrally placed eye. The one eyeball showed complete eyelashes on the defective eyelids. The nasal region and the anterior nares were absent along with a dorsally curved mandible extended beyond the defective maxillae.

  • Recently, the research on artificial retina for the blind is active. In this paper a new optical link method for the retinal prosthesis is proposed. Laser diode system was chosen to transfer image into the eye in this project and the new optical system was designed and evaluated. The use of laser diode array in artificial retina system makes system simple for lack of signal processing part inside of the eyeball. Designed optical system is enough to focus laser diode array on photodiode array in 20$\times$20 application.

  • The author performed in 10 cases under the age of 13 years who were visited to hospital from July 1994 to July 1995. I have assessed information such as type of deviation, detected time of strabismus, past history, family history. The most of patient were esotropia. I have experienced good improvement to recover strabismus by the Oriental Medicine. The acupuncture points of B2, TE23. S1, G14, E36 were mainly used. Herbal medicine was treated GAMIBOJOONGYKGI-TANG. It was supposed to encourage digestive system and to continue elastic capacity. From the results of this study, it is effective to change of correct position at the deviational eyeball and to treat amp1yopia with strabismus. It was reported possble to treat strabismus without operation and glasses.

  • Objectives : Paralytic strabismus refers to the nerve paralysis in the muscles responsible for the movement of the eyeball for any reason, resulting in a restriction of eye movement. This study is to report a case of the paralytic Strabismus caused by midbrain infarction treated with Korean medicine. Methods : Patient received Korean medical treatment such as acupuncture & herbal medicine (Saengkankunbi-tang). Result & Conclusion : During 15 weeks of the treatment, patient's strabismus and diplopia were improved.

Dosimetric evaluation of using in-house BoS Frame Fixation Tool for the Head and Neck Cancer Patient (두경부암 환자의 양성자 치료 시 사용하는 자체 제작한 BoS Frame 고정장치의 선량학적 유용성 평가)

  • Purpose : BoS(Base of Skull) Frame, the fixation tool which is used for the proton of brain cancer increases the lateral penumbra by increasing the airgap (the distance between patient and beam jet), due to the collision of the beam of the posterior oblique direction. Thus, we manufactured the fixation tool per se for improving the limits of BoS frame, and we'd like to evaluate the utility of the manufactured fixation tool throughout this study. Materials and Methods : We've selected the 3 patients of brain cancer who have received the proton therapy from our hospital, and also selected the 6 beam angles; for this, we've selected the beam angle of the posterior oblique direction. We' ve measured the planned BoS frame and the distance of Snout for each beam which are planned for the treatment of the patient using the BoS frame. After this, we've proceeded with the set-up that is above the location which was recommended by the manufacturer of the BoS frame, at the same beam angle of the same patient, by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool. The set-up was above 21 cm toward the superior direction, compared to the situation when the BoS frame was only used with the basic couch. After that, we've stacked the snout to the BoS frame as much as possible, and measured the distance of snout. We've also measured the airgap, based on the gap of that snout distance; and we've proceeded the normalization based on each dose (100% of each dose), after that, we've conducted the comparative analysis of lateral penumbra. Moreover, we've established the treatment plan according to the changed airgap which has been transformed to the Raystation 5.0 proton therapy planning system, and we've conducted the comparative analysis of DVH(Dose Volume Histogram). Results : When comparing the result before using the in-house Bos frame fixation tool which was manufactured for each beam angle with the result after using the fixation tool, we could figure out that airgap than when not used in accordance with the use of the in-house Bos frame fixation tool was reduced by 5.4 cm ~ 15.4 cm, respectively angle. The reduced snout distance means the airgap. Lateral Penumbra could reduce left, right, 0.1 cm ~ 0.4 cm by an angle in accordance with decreasing the airgap while using each beam angle in-house Bos frame fixation tool. Due to the reduced lateral penumbra, Lt.eyeball, Lt.lens, Lt. hippocampus, Lt. cochlea, Rt. eyeball, Rt. lens, Rt. cochlea, Rt. hippocampus, stem that can be seen that the dose is decreased by 0 CGE ~ 4.4 CGE. Conclusion : It was possible to reduced the airgap by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool for the proton therapy; as a result, it was possible to figure out that the lateral penumbra reduced. Moreover, it was also possible to check through the comparative analysis of the treatment plan that when we reduce the lateral penumbra, the reduction of the unnecessary irradiation for the normal tissues. Therefore, Using the posterior oblique the Brain cancer proton therapy should be preceded by decreasing the airgap, by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool; also, the continuous efforts for reducing the airgap as much as possible for the proton therapy of other area will be necessary as well.

Measurement of Orbit using Standardized Processing of CT Scan

  • Purpose Surgical correction of various occular problems which do not have visual problem in plastic surgical area is to normalize the appearance of the face by restoring the normal position of orbit and eyeball. With development of surgical technique, the orbit can be restored exactly in trauma patient and can be moved totally in hypertelorism, as an example of congenital disease. All these surgeries are based on the hypothesis that the position of oclular glove moves in the plane in a quantitatively predictable reationship to osseous orbit movement. However, no studies have critically evaluated between the change of periorbital soft tissue and the outcome of the surgical correction, because there is no method of objective, quantitave evaluation of the periorbital soft tissue. Method Author suggest the methodology for quantitative assessment of ocular and periocular fat changes using the manipulation of digital images of computed tomographic scan. Results The method was allowed to evaluate inter-dacryon distance, inter-centroid distance, movement of the medial orbital wall, movement of the lateral orbital wall, alteration of thickness of the lateral periorbital fat as indicator of movement of the orbital wall and orbit in the patient with congenital periorbital anomaly and postoperative periorbital surgery. Development of Central Nervous System in Scuttle Fly (Scuttle Fly에서 중추신경계 발달 연구)

  • The scuttle fly central nervous system (CNS) is unobservable during egg and larvae instar stage 1. During days 2~3 of larvae instar stage 2, the left and right hemisphere of the brain can be observed. Below the brain, the subesophageal ganglion (SOG) connects to the ventral nerve cord (VNC). During days 3~5 of larvae instar stage 3, the CNS enlarged slightly with no other changes. During days 1~3 of the pupal stage the CNS moved to the head with no distinguishable changes from the previous stage. During days 4~6 of the pupal stage, the left and right hemisphere of the brain had fused into one mass and the optic lobe (OL) located on the side of the brain completed its development. During days 7~9 of the pupal stage, the OL began to show eyeball pigment. The SOG was connected to the brain and the VNC began to separate, which was accompanied by an increase in nerve fibers. During days 10~12 of the pupal stage, the brain of the CNS and VNC was clearly distinguished and the brown pigmentation of OL became darker. During days 13~15 days of the pupal stage, the separated brain and VNC became connected by thin nerve fiber. The VNC began to separate into two with a greater increase in nerve fibers. The adult fly showed similar features to the previous stage, but the brain was located in the head and the VNC in the chest.

Discriminant Analysis of Human's Implicit Intent based on Eyeball Movement (안구운동 기반의 사용자 묵시적 의도 판별 분석 모델)

  • Recently, there has been tremendous increase in human-computer/machine interaction system, where the goal is to provide with an appropriate service to the user at the right time with minimal human inputs for human augmented cognition system. To develop an efficient human augmented cognition system based on human computer/machine interaction, it is important to interpret the user's implicit intention, which is vague, in addition to the explicit intention. According to cognitive visual-motor theory, human eye movements and pupillary responses are rich sources of information about human intention and behavior. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the identification of human implicit visual search intention based on eye movement pattern and pupillary analysis such as pupil size, gradient of pupil size variation, fixation length/count for the area of interest. The proposed model identifies the human's implicit intention into three types such as navigational intent generation, informational intent generation, and informational intent disappearance. Navigational intent refers to the search to find something interesting in an input scene with no specific instructions, while informational intent refers to the search to find a particular target object at a specific location in the input scene. In the present study, based on the human eye movement pattern and pupillary analysis, we used a hierarchical support vector machine which can detect the transitions between the different implicit intents - navigational intent generation to informational intent generation and informational intent disappearance.
