Simulation of Heat and Fluid Flow in the Single Screw Extruder with Coupling of the Metering Section and Die (단축 스크류 압축기에서 계량화부와 다이를 동시에 고려한 열 및 유동해석)

  • In the present study, the analysis on heat and fluid flow in the single screw extruder is carried out by simultaneously considering the metering section and the die. The finite difference method and the finite volume method are applied to the metering section and the die, respectively. The zonal method is used to couple the metering section and the die. To investigate the effect of die on the characteristics of heat and fluid flow in the single screw extruder, the pressure back flow is included in the analysis. The screw-tip rotation is also considered by employing the quasi 3-dimensional die model. The present results are compared with the numerical and experimental data available in the literatures.

  • Extruders can be basically divided into bisk and screw type of extruders. Though plastic extruders are often used for its simplicity for water and oil transportation pumps, these days screw extruders are mostly used. Screws are used in many extrusion processes to manufacture complex and complicated shaped parts made of plastics, medicine materials, food, polymer composites, iron and ceramic powders, etc. Also, material correction of deformities is caused by flow and physicochemical reaction phenomenonand material extrusion is processed according to heat transfer. various material comes to hopper because extruder has function by blender and mixing of materials can go well before come out through dice. These change process is so complicated that process condition is decided by trial and error that process condition is underground mainly at extrusion molding process.

  • It is very important that there are saving resource and energy in the future as well as in these day. Weight saving of structural parts, which are formed by extrusion, plays a key role in manufacturing field. Especially these aluminum parts used in the car need other processes to vary the cross section in the axial direction. Thus, applications of these parts are limited by high cost. if the cross section of the parts is variable by only extrusion, application of extruded aluminum parts will more increase. Therefore, a new CNC extruder which can control the section area of a car part was invented the nation's first. Using the extrusion machine, the experiment and FE analysis were performed during the varied section extrusion process.

  • The water proofing sheet of synthetic polymer applies to the purification plant, the wastewater treatment center, the low waterway, the dosing tanks, etc, and when we construct these, we apply the dual waterproof by means of hot air staking welder or extruder. However, the experts skilled in the hot air welding or extruder does not use them, it can be a quality problem. Therefore, in this study, it is the purpose to verify whether the semi-automatic hot air staking welder and automatic extruder that can construct the waterproof sheet is possible in field even if it is not a professional specialist.

  • This research was conducted to determine a preliminary design parameters for the development of twin screw extruder using Booy's screw design method, and to analyze a extrusion process using Janssen's mathematical flow model. In processing process, the experimental mass flow rates of com flour and wheat flour were almost the same as theoretical values corrected by correction factors of 0.95 and 0.6 respectively. It was appeared that the mathematical model would be suitable to predict the conveying capacity.

  • MWNTs have been widely investigated due to unique properties of such as good electrical conductivity and thermal stability in polymer composites industries. This paper established the procedure to fabricate PMMA/MWNT composites by a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The electrical properties of PMMA/MWNT composites with different content of MWNT have been investigated. A sheet resistance percolation was observed at 4 wt% of MWNT for the melt processed composites. Sheet resistance of PMMA/MWNT composite film containing 4 wt% of MWNT was nearby $10^4{\Omega}/sq$ and this shows the possibility of potential application to EMI (Electronic Magnetic Interference) shielding materials. The characteristics of composites were analyzed by TGA, DSC, and SEM. In addition, MFI (Melt Flow Index) has been measured to analyze the rheological property.

  • An intermeshing corotating twin screw extruder is mainly used for compounding polymeric materials. Twin screw extruder can adopt modular-type screw configurations, which directly controls the quality and productivity of the products. The types, shapes, and specifications of the screw and kneading elements are summarized, and the effects of screw configuration on the processabiliy of the materials are discussed. The principles of screw configuration universally applied to mass production of general-purpose resins are explained, and the guidelines of screw combination according to the roles of feeding, melt mixing, and metering zones are listed. The strategies of screw combination suitable for various cases, such as side feeding of liquid additives or inorganic fillers, reactive extrusion, devolatilization process, production of products requiring bright color and transparency, and processing of materials with low apparent specific gravity, are presented.

Study on Manufacturing Technology of Coating Yarns for Awning Fabrics (차양막 직물용 코팅사 제조기술에 관한 연구)

  • This paper investigated optimum process conditions of coating yarn for awning fabric. For this purpose, the simulation for processability and yarn quality using SPSS statistics package was carried out, and PP/TPO and PET/PVC coating yarns specimens were made with variation of extruder temperature and feed speed of core yarn on the yarn coating machine for examining simulation result. It was revealed that optimum coating conditions of PP/TPO 1000d coating yarn were extruder temperature $150^{\circ}C$, and core yarn feed speed 400~500m/min. Mechanical property and thermal shrinkage of PP/TPO coating yarn made at this conditions were best and core evenness rates of these coating yarns by yarn compression tester were also superior, which was certified by SEM photograph. In addition, these experimental results were coincided with simulation results. It was found that, in PET/PVC coating yarn, yarn physical properties between 1500d and 1200d coated yarns were not shown any difference, and core evenness rates of these coating yarns were superior. It revealed and concluded that these simulated coating conditions are applicable to production field.

  • Supercritical carbon dioxide ($scCO_2$) has advantages of being incorporated in polymer with high solubility and of being recovered easily by depressurizing. $scCO_2$ reduces the viscosity of polymer melt and it is expected to be use as a plasticizing agent. In this work, we studied on the effect of $scCO_2$ on the rheological properties of polymer melts during extrusion process. Slit die attached to twin screw extruder was used to measure the viscosity of polymer melts plasticized by supercritical $CO_2$. A gas injection system was devised to accurately meter the supercritical $CO_2$ into the extruder barrel. Measurements of pressure drop within the die, confirmed the presence of a one phase mixture and a fully developed flow during the measurements. The viscosity measurement of polypropylene was performed at experimental conditions of various temperatures, pressures and $CO_2$ concentrations. We observed that melt viscosity of polymer was dramatically reduced by $CO_2$ addition.

An Integrated CAD System for Design of Extruder Screw (압출 스크류 설계를 위한 CAD 시스템 개발)

  • The extruder screw is a part for extruding material in a injection molding machine. The screw's geometrical shape can mathematically be described by a sweep surface which is constructed by sweeping a section curve composed of a few circular arcs, along a helical guide curve. In the paper we developed a dedicated CAD system which basically is parametric in a sense that the system initially takes several design parameters to construct the geometric elements including the final sweep surface of the screw as well as section & guiding curves, along with feasibility check of the input parameter values, without further user interaction. The system has been developed as a built-in module onto a commercial CAD system, which can further incorporate additional NC-out functions with ease.
