The purpose of this study was to analyze the presence of ipsilesional movement deficit, with segmental performance in each proximal or distal upper extremity. The visuoperceptual complex task of the ipsilesional upper extremity was investigated in patients with unilateral brain damage and a control group of healthy sex-age-matched controls. Tracking movements were tested in the proximal and distal upper extremities. Movements were measured by the accuracy index, which was normalized to each subject's own range of motion and took into account any differences between subjects in the excursion of the tracking target. The findings revealed that stroke patients experienced difficulties with tracking movement of both proximal and distal segments in the upper extremities on the so-called "non-affected side", irrespectively of the extent of patient's age, time since onset, or severity of contralateral upper extremity. Therefore, the unilateral brain damage affected ipsilateral motor function of the proximal and distal upper limbs in the performance of complex motor tasks, requiring central processing and the higher order cognitive function in the integrity of both hemispheres.

The purposes of this study were 1) to compare weight distribution and ratio of the extremities between normal and hemiplegic children in quadruped position and 2) to compare the effect of ATNR on weight bearing of the extremities between normal and hemiplegic children. The subjects fer the study were 48 children(24 normal, 24 hemiplegic) between the ages 3 to 6. They were teated weight distribution and ratio of the extremities in the neutral position of head and by passive right and left rotation of the head in the quadruped position. The data wert analized by paired t-test. The results were as follows: 1. In the neutral position of head, normal group was not difference on weight distribution and ratio of the extremities and hemiplegic group was more weight bearing on the sound upper extremity than the affected upper extremity(p<.01). 2. When the head rotated to the dominant side or sound side passively, there was not a significant difference between normal and hemiplegic group. 3. When the head rotated to the nondominant side or affected side passively, there was a significant difference between nondominant upper extremity nf normal and affected upper extremity of hemiplegic group(p<.05).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of opposite lower extremity lateral muscle activation by proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) exercise targeting the lower extremities. Methods: Nineteen patients with chronic hemiplegia volunteered to participate in this study. PNF flexion, abduction, and internal rotation patterns; initial, end range, and extension patterns; abduction and internal rotation patterns; and initial and end range patterns were applied to the dominant lower extremity. Activation of lateral muscles (multifidus, gluteus medius, tensor fascia lata, and peroneous longus) of the paralyzed leg was then measured by electromyography (EMG). Results: There were significant differences in lateral muscle activation, depending on the PNF pattern applied, with the differences more significant in flexion, abduction, internal rotation, and end range patterns. Conclusion: PNF flexion, abduction, and internal rotation patterns can improve lateral muscle activation of one leg in the standing position in the gait cycle.
The first purpose of this study was to compare kinematic variables during spinning motion with or without upper extremity and identify the most effective spinning method. The second purpose of this study was to compare functional difference between novice and elite dancers with the term of training. Ten experienced female dancers and ten novices were recruited as subjects for this study. Elite group was asked to perform turn motion with three types of upper extremity. Novice group has taken training of spotting technique for five weeks. Four Falcon HiRES cameras were used to analyze kinematic variables including head angular velocity and CG displacement during spinning. These data were sampled before training, after 3-week, and 5-week of training. Eight different events in two consecutive turns were defined for statistical comparison. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare among the kinematics of turning motion with three types of upper extremity. Independent t-test also used to compare kinematics between elite and novice at three different length of training. As results, spinning with both arm increased angular velocity and stability compared to the turning motion with one arm or with arm strapped and found out that the turn with both arm was the most effective way of spin. Also, for novice dancers, three weeks of training were needed to complete spinning motion.
Little information is available about the characteristics in revolution gait of hemiplegic elderly, which is frequently represented in daily life. It is also hard to elucidate purely the characteristics due to hemiplegia because of no consideration of aging factors. The aim of study is to identify the alteration characteristics of lower extremity joint angles in both straight and revolution gaits together due to hemiplegia through comparing healthy with hemiplegic elderly. Following Institutional Review Board approval, twelve healthy and hemiplegic elderly were participated and the center of body mass (COM) and lower extremity joint angles were measured during straight and revolution gaits using a computer-aided video motion capture system. The results showed that the gait characteristics were generally altered in both straight and revolution gaits due to hemiplegia (p < 0.05). The gait characteristics were then different between the straight and revolution gaits each other. This study may be valuable by identifying for the first time the alterations of the lower extremity joint angles in both straight and revolution gaits due to pure hemiplegia through comparing healthy elderly with hemiplegic elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of study was to test the effect of lower extremity muscle strengthening exercise using elastic resistance on balance on elderly women. Methods: Twenty four women who were over 65 years old were randomly assigned to either the experimental group that received the exercise programme (n=12) or to the control group (n=12) that continued normal activities except programme. Exercises included the following 7 different activities; chair squat, knee flection, extension, hip flection, extension, calf muscle raise, ankle dorsiflection. All the participants were subject to 3 tests, including One-Leg Standing Test, Functional Reaching Test, and Up & Go Test. The measurements were made before the excercise, 4 and 8 weeks after the exercise. The data were analyzed by using the two way repeated ANOVA. Results: The results were as follows; As compared with change of balance capacity between groups, a significant difference was shown in the up and go test (p<.05), but not in balance performance clinical test of OLST (p>.05) and FRT (p>.05). Conclusion: The lower extremity muscle strengthening exercise using elastic resistance for the elderly women had some positive effects on the balance. Therefore this intervention can be broadly applied to other elders for preventing falls.
A human gait study is required for the biomechanical design of running shoes. A tow-dimensional dynamic model was developed in order to analyze lower extremity kinematics and loadings at the right ankle, knee, and hip joints. The dynamic model consists of three segments, the upper leg, the lower leg, and the foot. Each segment was assumed to be a rigid body with one or two frictionless hinge joints. The lower extremity motion was assumed to be planar in the sagittal plane. A young male subject was involved in the gait test and his anthropometric data were measured for the calculation of segement mass and moment of inertia. The experimental data were obtained from three trials of walking at 1.2m/s. The foot-floor reaction data were measured from a Kistler force plate. The kinematic data were acquired using a three-dimensional motion measurement system (Expert Vision) with six markers, five of which were placed on the right lower extremity segments and the rest one was attached to the force plate. Based on the model and experimental data for the stance phase of the right foot, the calculated vertical forces reached up to 492, 540, and 561 N at the hip, knee, ankle joints, respectively. The flexion-extension moments reached up to 155, 119, and 33 Nm in magnitude at the corresponding joints.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify effects of virtual reality-based closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercise on lower extremity muscle activity in chronic stroke patients Methods : Subjects were assigned randomly either to VR+CKC exercise group (n=15) or the CKC exercise group (n=15). When the study began, both groups received conventional physical therapy five times per week. The VR+CKC exercise group received virtual reality programs and the CKC exercise group received close kinetic chain exercises. Each exercise program was performed for six weeks (5 times per weeks; 20 minutes per time). Participants were measured on lower extremity muscle activity using EMG. Results : There was a significant increase of muscle activity (%RVC) in vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. Conclusion : In this study, the virtual reality-based closed kinetic chain exercise program was an effective exercise for improving lower extremity muscle activity in chronic stroke patients.
The purpose of this study was to obtain the data for stable and accurate techniques of the free throw in basketball. The subjects of this study were seven male basketball player consisted of college students athletes. Free throw motions were taken by video camera. The three-dimensional coordinates was processed by DLT. The variables were the velocity, the angular velocity of the upper extremity segments, degree, and angular momentum. The result of analysis is summarized as follows. 1. The velocity and angular velocity of the upper extremity segment was showed an gradual increase and a smooth velocity transfer, transferring from proximal segment to distal segment at free throw motion in basketball. 2. The local term and remote term angular velocity momentum of the proximal segment showed larger than that of the distal segment in X, Y, Z axis component all. 3. The remote term angular momentum was showed larger than that of the local term angular momentum in X, Y, Z axis component all. 4. The angular motion of the upper trunk and upper arm, upper arm and forearm was showed in opposite direction and symmetrical angular momentum in local term angular momentum of the Y and Z axis component. 5. All the segments of upper extremity segment was showed left rotation in remote term angular momentum of the Y axis component and right rotation in remote term angular momentum of the Z axis component.

Purpose: Erysipelas is a bacterial infection of the dermis and hypodermis, mostly of streptococcal origin, and erysipelas of upper extremity following breast cancer treatment has never been reported in the Korean literature. Methods: 39-year-old female presented to our hospital complaining of fever and painful swelling of her left upper extremity. She had a history of breast cancer and was treated with breast conserving surgery with axillary lymph node dissection, chemotherapy, and radiation. On physical examination, her left upper extremity showed vesicle, bullae, local heatness and erythema with well-defined margin. With these distinctive features of a skin lesion, we gave a diagnosis of erysipelas and started treatment with intravenous antibiotics. Results: Resolution of the signs and symptoms of erysipelas occurred after 7 days of treatment. Conclusion: The diagnosis of erysipelas with distinctive feature of skin lesion is essential and we emphasize that the prevention of any trauma are very important in these patients for prophylactic measures.
