  • To determine the contents of $^{99}Tc$ in the spent PWR (pressurized water reactor) nuclear fuels by ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry), a technetium separation method using an extraction chromatographic resin (TEVA Spec resin) has been established. $^{99}Tc$ was separated from a spent PWR nuclear fuel solution by this separation procedure and its concentration was determined by ICP-MS. The result agrees well with the value calculated by the program ORIGEN 2 and also the value measured by AG MP-1 resin/ICP-MS method described in our previous paper. It can be concluded that the present separation procedure is superior to the AG MP-1 resin procedure with respect to the time required for technetium separation as well as the efficiency of decontamination from other radioactive nuclides.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to investigate an optimum condition to separate Nd and Pr from chloride solutions using PC88A and D2EHPA. In our experimental ranges, the distribution coefficients of Nd were higher than those of Pr. In both of PC88A and D2EHPA extractant system, our results indicated that the increase in concentration ratio of extractant to metal had a great effect on the extraction and separation of the two metals. In extraction with saponified D2EHPA, the initial pH of the aqueous solution and saponification degree had some effect on the extraction of the two metals but little effect on the separation factor.

  • Succinic acid is an important material in industries producing biodegradable polymers, food and pharmaceutical products, and green solvents. Furthermore, succinate fermentation is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. However, the impurities in fermentation broth make the separation process of succinic acid be difficult. Reactive extraction has been proposed to be an effective primary separation step of succinic acid from dilute fermentation broth. This article presents the principles of reactive extraction along with the characteristics of tertiary amino extractants. A brief overview on the current research on reactive extraction of succinic acid is presented. Finally, for the succinic acid separation, reactive extraction as a primary step is suggested in the whole downstream process for succinic acid from fermentation broth.

  • Extraction/separation of cobalt by supported liquid membrane has been reviewed. The review discusses various directions associated with the supported liquid membrane process, such as the kind of supported liquid membrane, the principle of supported liquid membrane, transport mechanism involved, and the advantages and disadvantages of the supported liquid. Finally, extraction and separation of cobalt from other metals using extractant through supported liquid membrane have been reviewed. Separation of cobalt using various reagents and cobalt recovery from scrap using commercial extractant can be a potential perspective from the application of supported liquid membrane application.

  • In order to shorten the extraction time of saponin in ginseng products, election with Extrelut column and phase-separation methods were compared. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Saponin of ginseng products was extracted completely within 3 hours by election method with Extrelut column, and the rate of removing glucose by the column was increased with increasing glucose content in ginseng products. 2. Stirring method was superior to refluxing method for removing sugars from ginseng products, and removing rate was deceased in the order of lactose, sucrose and glucose. 3. Extraction rate of ginsenoside from ginseng extracts by the elution method was nearly same as that of phase-separation method; however, the former was much higher than the latter in the case of ginseng teas. Therefore, the elution by Extrelut column is to be improper for extraction of saponin in ginseng tea which contains much sugar. It was necessary to remove lipophilic compounds for extraction of saponin from ginseng extracts by elution with Extrelut column.

  • This work reports the application of a hollow fiber module(HFM) for Cr(VI) extraction from heavy metal salts mixed solution by using microporous hydrophobic hollow fiber module. In HFM configuration, the organic extraction used for the extraction of Cr(VI) was di-(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid(D2EHPA) diluted with n-heptane. The study of HFM includes the influence of hydrodynamic and chemical condition, i.e., the flow rate of feed solution, the time of reactive extraction, the concentration of feed solution, and the pH of aqueous phase solutions. Several experiments with synthetic solution of different mixed components system of Cr(VI) solutions established optimum condition to achieve a clean separation of Cr(VI). It was possible to separate Cr(VI) in the presence of metal salts mixed solution, such as Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) using the HFM technique.

  • For the purpose of optimizing the counter current extraction process for separation of [Pr, Nd, Sm] group and [La] in mixed solution using Cyanex 572 as an extractant, the theory of Xu Guangxian was derived for calculating the optimized extraction factors. From the basic batch test result, the separation factor was 16.80 at extraction process and 21.48 at scrubbing process, and the loading capacity of 1.0 M Cyanex 572 was 0.12 M of rare earth element. The process parameters such as the stage number at extraction and scrubbing process, the flow rate ratio of feed and solvent solution can be calculated using an equation of optimum extraction ratio proposed by Xu Guangxian. From the result of calculation, 7 extraction stages and 4 scrubbing stages were required for rare earth separation, and the flow rate ratio of feed solution, solvent solution, scrubbing solution was 25 : 5.67 : 12.27.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate Nd and Pr from chloride leaching solution of monazite sand using single Cyanex272 and mixed extractants as PC88A+Cyanex272 and PC88A+TBP. For this purpose, the effect of the concentration of extractants on the extraction and separation of the two metals were studied by varying the pH of aqueous solution. In the experimental ranges conducted in this study, the distribution coefficients of Nd were higher than those of Pr. In Cyanex272 system, our results indicated that concentration of extractant and initial pH did not affect distribution coefficients, but separation factor was increased with increasing initial pH. In binary extractant system, distribution coefficients were lower than those of single PC88A system, whereas separation factor was similar in both mixed and single extractant system.

  • The separation and sample extraction methods of 19 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water samples were investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and some extraction methods involved liquid-liquid extraction, disk extraction and solid-phase extraction methods. The separation of 19 PAHs was possible by partial variation of oven temperature of GC/MS in temperature range $80{\sim}310^{\circ}C$. Extraction procedures of PAHs in water samples were somewhat modified and compared as extraction recoveries and the simplicity of methods. Extraction recoveries of PAHs were 71.3~109.5% by liquid-liquid extraction method. By using disk extraction, good extraction recoveries (80.7~94.9%) were obtained in case of $C_{18}$ disk extraction method by filtration. And extraction recoveries of PAHs by $C_{18}$ solid-phase were in the range of 51.8~77.9%. Method detection limits (S/N=5) of 19 PAHs were in the range of 0.25~6.25 ppb by liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction and 0.05~1.25 ppb by disk extraction methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to resource calcium ions contained in most industrial by-products, and confirm the characteristics of calcium ions by extraction and separation conditions. Calcium oxide was used as a calcium extraction source, and hydrochloric acid as an extraction solvent, and the extraction amount according to the concentration of the extraction solvent and the pH dependent characteristics of the extract were analyzed. As the extractant concentration increased, the extracted amount increased while the pH for the extraction was kept constant. In order to separate extracted calcium ions, an acid-basic solution was injected and the formation of precipitates and also the form of precipitates were analyzed. When the sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide solution of acid and basic substances were injected into the calcium extract, precipitates were formed and separated into CaSO4 and Ca(OH)2 forms.
