  • This study has proposed visual-feature extraction methods for each band in wavelet domain with both spatial frequency features and multi resolution features. In addition, it has brought forward similarity measurement method using fuzzy theory and new color feature expression method taking advantage of the frequency of the same color after color quantization for reducing quantization error, a disadvantage of the existing color histogram intersection method. Experiments are performed on a database containing 1,000 color images. The proposed method gives better performance than the conventional method in both objective and subjective performance evaluation.

  • In pattern classification, the Bhattacharyya distance has been used as a class separability measure. Furthemore, it is recently reported that the Bhattacharyya distance can be used to estimate error of Gaussian ML classifier within 1-2% margin. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method utilizing the Bhattacharyya distance. In the proposed method, we first predict the classification error with the error estimation equation based on the Bhauacharyya distance. Then we find the feature vector that minimizes the classification error using two search algorithms: sequential search and global search. Experimental reslts show that the proposed method compares favorably with conventional feature extraction methods. In addition, it is possible to determine how man, feature vectors arc needed for achieving the same classification accuracy as in the original space.

  • Bimodal speech recognition systems have been proposed for enhancing recognition rate of ASR under noisy environments. Visual feature extraction is very important to develop these systems. To extract visual features, it is necessary to detect exact lip position. This paper proposed the method that detects a lip position using color similarity model and SVM. Face/Lip color distribution is teamed and the initial lip position is found by using that. The exact lip position is detected by scanning neighbor area with SVM. By experiments, it is shown that this method detects lip position exactly and fast.

  • Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in men and is a major cause of mortality in the most of countries. In many diagnostic and treatment procedures for prostate disease accurate detection of prostate boundaries in transrectal ultrasound(TRUS) images is required. This is a challenging and difficult task due to weak prostate boundaries, speckle noise and the short range of gray levels. In this paper a method for automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images using Gabor feature extraction and snake-like contour is presented. This method involves preprocessing, extracting Gabor feature, training, and prostate segmentation. The speckle reduction for preprocessing step has been achieved by using stick filter and top-hat transform has been implemented for smoothing the contour. A Gabor filter bank for extraction of rotation-invariant texture features has been implemented. A support vector machine(SVM) for training step has been used to get each feature of prostate and nonprostate. Finally, the boundary of prostate is extracted by the snake-like contour algorithm. A number of experiments are conducted to validate this method and results showed that this new algorithm extracted the prostate boundary with less than 10.2% of the accuracy which is relative to boundary provided manually by experts.

  • This paper aims to present a supervised classification algorithm based on data fusion for the segmentation of the textured images. The feature extraction method we used is based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT). In the segmentation stage, the estimated feature vector of each pixel is sent to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier for initial labeling. To obtain a more accurate segmentation result, two strategies based on information fusion were used. We first integrated decision-level fusion strategies by combining decisions made by the SVM classifier within a sliding window. In the second strategy, the fuzzy set theory and rules based on probability theory were used to combine the scores obtained by SVM over a sliding window. Finally, the performance of the proposed segmentation algorithm was demonstrated on a variety of synthetic and real images and showed that the proposed data fusion method improved the classification accuracy compared to applying a SVM classifier. The results revealed that the overall accuracies of SVM classification of textured images is 88%, while our fusion methodology obtained an accuracy of up to 96%, depending on the size of the data base.

  • In this study, a length adjustment algorithm for cyclic signals in manufacturing process using Time Invariant Feature point Extraction and Matching(TIFEM) is proposed. In order to precisely compensate the length of cyclic signals which have irregular length in the middle of signal as well as in the full length more feature points are needed. The extracted feature must involve information about the pattern of signal and should have invariant properties on time and scale. The proposed TIFEM algorithm extracts features having the intrinsic properties of the signal characteristics at first. By using those extracted features, feature vector is constructed for each time point. Among those extracted features, the only effective features are filtered and are chosen such as basis for the length adjustment. And then the partial length adjustment is performed by matching feature points. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the experiments were performed with the experimental data mimicking the three kinds of signals generated from the actual semiconductor process.

  • In this paper, we present an approach for facial expression recognition using Active Shape Models(ASM) and a state-based model in image sequences. Given an image frame, we use ASM to obtain the shape parameter vector of the model while we locate facial feature points. Then, we can obtain the shape parameter vector set for all the frames of an image sequence. This vector set is converted into a state vector which is one of the three states by the state-based model. In the classification step, we use the k-NN with the proposed similarity measure that is motivated on the observation that the variation-regions of an expression sequence are different from those of other expression sequences. In the experiment with the public database KCFD, we demonstrate that the proposed measure slightly outperforms the binary measure in which the recognition performance of the k-NN with the proposed measure and the existing binary measure show 89.1% and 86.2% respectively when k is 1.

  • Recently, multimedia DBMS is appeared to be the core technology of the information society to store, manage and retrieve multimedia data efficiently. In this paper, we propose a new method for content based-retrieval system using wavelet transform, energy value to extract automatically feature vector from image data, and suggest an effective retrieval technique through this method. Wavelet transform is widely used in image compression and digital signal analysis, and its coefficient values reflect image feature very well. The correlation in wavelet domain between query image data and the stored data in database is used to calculate similarity. In order to assess the image retrieval performance, a set of hundreds images are run. The method using standard derivation and mean value used for feature vector extraction are compared with that of our method based on energy value. For the simulation results, our energy value method was more effective than the one using standard derivation and mean value.

  • Many sentiment categorization systems based on machine learning methods use morphological analyzers in order to extract linguistic features from sentences. However, the morphological analyzers do not generally perform well in a customer review domain because online customer reviews include many spacing errors and spelling errors. These low performances of the underlying systems lead to performance decreases of the sentiment categorization systems. To resolve this problem, we propose a feature extraction method based on simple longest matching of Eojeol (a Korean spacing unit) and phoneme patterns. The two kinds of patterns are automatically constructed from a large amount of POS (part-of-speech) tagged corpus. Eojeol patterns consist of Eojeols including content words such as nouns and verbs. Phoneme patterns consist of leading consonant and vowel pairs of predicate words such as verbs and adjectives because spelling errors seldom occur in leading consonants and vowels. To evaluate the proposed method, we implemented a sentiment categorization system using a SVM (Support Vector Machine) as a machine learner. In the experiment with Korean customer reviews, the sentiment categorization system using the proposed method outperformed that using a morphological analyzer as a feature extractor.

  • This paper describes the feature area-based vehicle plate recognition system(VPRS). For the extraction of vehicle plate in a vehicle image, we used the method which extracts vehicle plate area from a s vehicle image using intensity variation. For the extraction of the feature area containing character from the extracted vehicle plate, we used the histogram-based approach and the relative location information of individual characters in the extracted vehicle plate. The extracted feature area is used as the input vector of ART2 neural network. The proposed method simplifies the existing complex preprocessing the solves the problem of distortion and noise in the binarization process. In the difficult cases of character extraction by binarization process of previous method, our method efficiently extracts characters regions and recognizes it.
