  • The surface morphology and grain growth of amophous silicon (a-Si) films deposited by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) have been investigated as a function of deposition and in sltu annealing condition. The film deposited at the amorphous to polycrystalline transition temperature has an extra-rough, rugged surface with (311) t.exture. At the same deposition temperature, the grain structure tends to shirr. from the polycrystalline to the amorphous phase with increasing the film thickness. It is found that nucleation of a-Si during in situ annealing at the transition temperature without breaking the vacuum starts to occur from surface Si atom migration in contrast to a heterogeneous nucleation during film deposition.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs), since their first discovery, have been considered as new promising materials in various fields of applications including field emission displays, memory devices, electrodes, NEMS constituents, hydrogen storages and reinforcements in composites due to their extra-ordinary properties. The carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites have attracted attention owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties and are expected to overcome the limit of conventional materials. Various application areas are possible for carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites through the functionalization of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites have been fabricated by liquid phase process including surface functionalization and dispersion of CNTs within organic solvent. In case of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the mechanical strength and electrical conducting can be improved by more than an order of magnitude. The carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites can be applied to high strength polymers, conductive polymers, optical limiters and EMI materials. In spite of successful development of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the researches on carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic matrix nanocomposites show limitations due to a difficulty in homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within inorganic matrix. Therefore, the enhancement of carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic nanocomposites is under investigation to maximize the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes. To overcome the current limitations, novel processes, including intensive milling process, sol-gel process, in-situ process and spark plasma sintering of nanocomposite powders are being investigated. In this presentation, current research status on carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites with various matrices are reviewed.

  • Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) Fe with $Al_2O_3$ dispersoid was successfully produced by reactive milling with a mixture of Fe, $Fe_3O_4$ (Magnetite), $Fe_2O_3$ (Hematite) and Al reactants at cryogenic temperature. The milled powders were consolidated by Vacuum Hot Press (HP) at 1323 K, and the consolidated materials were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS); the yield strength and the hardness of the consolidated materials were determined by compressive test and Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The grain size of the materials was estimated by X-ray Diffraction technique using the scherrer's formula. The TEM observations showed that the microstructure was comprised with a mixture of nanocrystalline Fe matrix and $Al_2O_3$ nano-dispersoids with a bimodal size distribution; the 0.2% off-set yield strength of the materials was as high as $758{\pm}29$ MPa and the Vickers hardness was $358{\pm}2$. The effect of the cryogenic milling and addition of extra Fe powder was discussed on the suppression of MSR (Mechanically induced Self-sustaining Reaction) for the desired microstructural evolution of ODS alloys.

  • Nano-sized MgO single crystal powders have recently been reported to emit ultraviolet by stimulation of electrons in a vacuum. In this study, nanocrystalline MgO powders were applied to a xenon plasma flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) for a liquid crystal display backlight to improve its emission efficiency through the extra ultraviolet from the nano-MgO crystals. For comparison, a MgO nano-thin film was applied directly on the phosphors inside a lamp panel through e-beam evaporation. Adding MgO nano-crystal powders to the phosphors improved the luminance and efficiency of FFLs by around 20% and MgO nano-crystal coverage of 40% of the phosphor provided the best FFL emission characteristics; however, application of MgO thin film to the phosphors degraded the emission characteristics, even compared to FFLs without MgO. This was due to insufficient ultraviolet stimulation of the phosphors and the crystallinity and low secondary electron coefficient of the MgO.

  • Effects of cooling rate, cold reduction %, continuous annealing treatments on the recrystallization texture structure of the A1 killed extra low carbon steel sheet contaning Ti, Nb, and B were investigated. The texture coefficient ratio TC (222)/TC (200) tends to increase with decreasing the cooling rate of the coling process and increasing cold reduction %. However, the texture coefficient ratio tends to decrease as the cold reduction % increases from 80% to 90%, which may be due to the change of the primary texture structure from {554} (225) to {ill] (1 1%). The optimum fabrication procedures for the steel sheet with a maximum texture coefficient ratio may be : furnance cooling after the coiling treatment, 80% cold reduction and the continuous annealing treatment of holding at 80O0C for 1 min., water quenching and then holding at $450^{\circ}C$ for 5min.

  • The purpose of this study is to enhance the mechanical strength of specimens containing fly ash from fluidized bed type boiler, which the recycling rate will be eventually increased. Specimens containing fly ash in a certain portion were made and aged for 3, 14, and 28 days. Specimens were carbonated under the supercritical condition at $40^{\circ}C$. The carbonation process under the supercritical condition was performed to enhance the mechanical property of specimens by filling the voids and cracks existing inside cement specimen with $CaCO_3$ reactants. The additional aging effect after the supercritical carbonation process on mechanical strength of specimens was also investigated by comparing the compressive strength with and without 7 day extra aging. Under the supercritical condition and additional 7 day aging specimens were very effective for enhancement of mechanical strength and compressive strength increased by 44 %.

  • Excellent deep drawability and strain aging rsistance are obtained by the addition of alloying elements such as Ti and Nb which can form carbide and nitride easily into Al killed extra low carbon steel. Recrystallization textures and mechanical properties of the three different extra low carbon steels with B containing Nb only, Ti only, and both Nb and Ti, respectively, along with have been compared. Inverse pole figure shows that (100) and (111) texture intensities of Nb containing steel changed a lot during the annealing treatment and the degree of texture-structural change in the steel containing both Nb and Ti is about the same as that in the Ti-containing 5teel. After annealing the pole figure shows that the {Ill} < 110 > and {112} < 110> textures are the strongest in the cold rolled state and the annealed state, respectively. However, there is little difference in texture structure among the three kinds of steels. There is a tendency that the steel containing both Nb and Ti the grain size of which is the smallest is the highest in hardness. Nb-containing steel is the next and Ti -containing steel is the last in hardness.

  • Abstract Alloying elements such as AI, Ti, Nb and B in the extra low carbon AI-killed steel precipitate as nitrides or carbides and change the recrystallization texture structure of the steel during heattreatment with the result of strong effects on the deep drawability of the steel sheet. In this study the effects of fine precipitates such as nitrides and carbides on the texture of extra low carbon steels into which Ti, Nb, B, P, Si and Mn were added as alloying elements were investigated by means of TEM, SEM and optical microscopic analyses. Fine N$b_2$C and T$i_2$AIN precipitates are mainly observed in the steel containing both Nb and Ti, while fine AIN and coarse BN precipitates are observed in the Nb~containing steel and coarse T${i_4}{N_3}$ and ${N_10}{N_22}$/T$i_68$ precipitates are observed in the Ti-containing steel. The grain size of the Ti containing steel is larger than that of the Nb containing steel and that of the one containing both Nb and Ti.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis that can effectively predict the effect of strengthening of cracked flexural members is developed using axial deformation link elements. Concrete and interface between concrete and repair material are considered as quasi-brittle material. Reinforcing bars and reinforcing steel plates are assumed to perform as elasto-plastic materials. Unloading behavior of axial deformation link element is implemented. In the developed numerical model, a flexural member is intentionally cracked by pre-loading, then, the cracked member is repaired using extra elements, and reloaded. The results from analysis of repaired flexural members agrees well with available experiment results. Also, it was shown that the effect of strengthening and the change of failure mode with respect to the time for strengthening and thickness of repair materials. Based on the results, it was determined that the developed numerical model has a good agreement for determining failure modes and effect of strengthening in cracked flexural members. By utilizing the developed numerical analysis, the time and dimension of external strengthening in an existing cracked flexural member with predition of failure mechanism can be determined.

  • Piezoelectric materials have been investigated as vibration energy converters to power wireless devices or MEMS devices due to the recent low power requirements of such devices and the advancement in miniaturization technology. Piezoelectric power generation can be an alternative to the traditional power source-battery because of the presence of facile vibration sources in our environment and the potential elimination of the maintenance required for large volume batteries. This paper represents the new power source which supplies energy device node. This system, called "energy harvesting system", with piezo materials scavenges extra energy such as vibration and acceleration from the environment. Then it converts the mechanical energy scavenged to electrical energy for powering device This paper explains the properties of piezo material through theoretical analysis and experiments The developed system provides a solution to overcome the critical problem of making up wireless device networks.
