  • In this study the progressive collapse potential of three- and nine-story special steel moment frames designed in accordance with current design code was evaluated by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. It was observed that the model structures had high potential for progressive collapse when a first story column was suddenly removed. Then the size of beams required to satisfy the failure criteria for progressive collapse was obtained by the virtual work method; i.e., using the equilibrium of the external work done by gravity load due to loss of a column and the internal work done by plastic rotation of beams. According to the nonlinear dynamic analysis results, the model structures designed only for normal load turned out to have strong potential for progressive collapse whereas the structures designed by plastic design concept for progressive collapse satisfied the failure criterion recommended by the GSA guideline.

  • This study suggests isolated Type IV-MO or Type IV-LO fractures could be treated with nonsurgical treatment because they do not interfere with normal elbow kinematics. Valgus and external rotation instability were influenced by total articular surface, however, posterior and proximal translation were influenced by isolated articular surface involvement of coronoid. Further clinical studies are warranted to validate these in vitro findings.

  • Isolated avulsion of the lesser tuberosity of the humerus in adolescent is rare injury. The mechanism of injury is acute forced external rotation and with the arm in abduction which has been reported in children participating in sports such as football, hockey, volleyball, wrestling and skateboarding. The diagnosis is often delayed despite chronic pain and disability. Authors report the unique case of a skeletally immature adolescent Judo player who had an isolated avulsion of the lesser tuberosity of the humerus with the references.

  • This study explored how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation relates to achieving creativity at project work. We were interested in differences in how motivational factors relate to creativity. Using data from the 98 engineers and researchers employed by a variety of companies, principal components factor analysis with marimax rotation was performed on the data. We examined effects of the moderate variables the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and creativity relationship. The results indicate of positive mental involvement, the time and the resource constraints relates positively to creativity in organizations and that the relationship is a simple linear one. These outcomes are significantly related to intrinsic motivation and the creativity. In additions, extrinsic motivation is related to less the creativity. Our survey findings are also consistent with other sources of knowledge on the topic. Our results suggest that there are two different role: mental involvement, time and resources constraints, both of which predict creativity, and external control and extrinsic motivations reduce to creativity.

  • Recently, the disturbance caused by an optical disk vibration and the external vibration/shock are more serious problem in an optical disk drives (ODD) as an ODD become small size and rotation speed increases. The conventional controller cannot cope with the mentioned problems properly when the disturbance and vibration are larger than some range. Therefore, we propose a new control scheme using a disturbance observer (DOB) and it can control the aforementioned problems. The designed the controller is applied to a commercial ODD in focusing direction, then its validity is proved by experimental method. By rising the disturbance observer theory, the focusing performance is conspicuously improved in the presence of sinusoidal vibrations or a shock disturbance. This algorithm also applies to a tracking structure also, because focusing structure is very similar to it.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the strength of sokinetic muscle by the position of a volleyball players. Analysis and comparison of shoulder dynamic stability will be conducted according to rotational movement of the shoulder during spiking and serving amongst the various positions. Fifty professional Korean female volleyball players (age: 20~30), all different positions - attacker (left and right), center, setter, and libero were The concentric peak torque, strength ration of the internal and external rotation of the shoulder girdle for both dominant and non-dominant arms. Firstly, there were significant differences found for the strength ratio between the setter and the other positions in the dominant arm. On a second note, there was a significant decrease in shoulder dynamic stabilization for both the attacker and center in the dominant arm. However, there were no significant differences for the setter or the libero. This study suggests that the isokinetic muscle strengths of the volleyball players are different from each other.

  • Low tibial osteotomy is an extra-articular procedure that realigns the mechanical axis, restoring ankle function. It is also an alternative surgical procedure to manage early osteoarthritis of the ankle joint. This can mainly address ankle varus/valgus, as well as procurvatum/ recurvatum, internal/external rotation, equinus, calcaneus, and limb length discrepancy. The authors describe the history, mechanism, indications, and limitations of low tibial osteotomy focused on osteoarthritis of the ankle with varus malalignment reviewing several articles published thus far.

  • This paper deals with a robust speed control problem of a vertical one-link manipulator in the presence of parameter uncertainties and unknown input disturbance. Uncertain load weight causes an additional sinusoidal disturbance in the rotation of the link. In order to improve the robustness against parameter uncertainties and external input disturbances, this paper employs an internal model-based disturbance observer approach. Comparative computer simulations are performed to test the performance of the proposed controller. The simulation results show the enhanced performance of the proposed method.

  • Geometric corrections are required to compensate skew effects, earth rotation effects and so on. Parameters for geometric modeling can be acquired from the metadata information. These parameters allow to locate on ground every pixel of acquired images. In this paper, we tested the precision of geometric modeling of linear pushbroom images, acquired by SPOT 3 and 5 using the satellite orbit information itself without additional external data. The result acquired from examination to recovery the geometry of image using 30 GCPs have about 650m RMSE in SPOT 3 and about 170m RMSE in SPOT 5.

  • This paper presents a method for the nonlinear analysis of beam elements subjected to the cyclical combined actions of torsion, biaxial flexure and axial forces based on an extension of the disturbed compression field (DSFM). The theoretical model is based on a hybrid formulation between the full rotation of the cracks model and the fixed direction of the cracking model. The described formulation, which treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material, includes a new approach for the evaluation of the re-orientation of both the compression field and the deformation field by removing the restriction of their coincidence. A new equation of congruence permits evaluating the deformation of the middle line. The problem consists in the solution of coupled nonlinear simultaneous equations expressing equilibrium, congruence and the constitutive laws. The proposed method makes it possible to determine the deformations of the beam element according to the external stresses applied.
