Driving Conditions and Occupational Accident Management in Large Truck Collisions

  • Objective: Objective of this study is to provide characteristics of injury frequency and severity by driving condition in large truck-related traffic collisions. Background: Traffic accidents involving large trucks draw a lot of attention in accident prevention and management policies since they bring about severe human and financial damages. Method: In order to identify the major risk factors of accidents by driving condition, 255 recognized traffic accidents by large truck drivers were analyzed in terms of time of the day, road type, and shape of the road. Results: The driving conditions in the results are represented by the following form of combination, "Road Type (Non-expressway or Express) - Shape of Roads (Straight, Curved, Downhill, or Intersection) - Time of Accidents (Day or Night)". In the analysis of injury frequency, Non-expressway-Straight-Day condition was the most frequent one. Meanwhile, Expressway-Curved-Day, Non-expressway-Curved-Night and Non-expressway-Intersection-Night were evaluated as high level in view of injury severity. Also, Expressway-Straight-Night is the driving condition that is the highest in risk among the conditions that have to be managed as grade "High". Non-expressway-Straight-Night, Non-expressway-Downhill-Day, and Non-expressway-Curved-Day are also categorized as grade "High". Conclusion and Application: Safety managers in the fields require basic information on accident prevention that can be easily understood. The research findings will serve as a practical guideline for establishing preventive measures for traffic accidents.

고령운전자 특성 기반의 고속도로 주행 위험구간 도출 연구 (An Investigation of Risk Spots on Expressways based on Older Drivers' Perception and Behavior Analyses)

  • PURPOSES : This study was conducted to develop expressway safety treatments based on the analysis results of older driver behaviors through literature review, surveys, and driving simulator experiments. METHODS : In this study, three analyses were conducted: surveys of 700 older drivers to find the risk segments they recognized, driving simulator experiments with older and younger drivers to investigate driver behaviors, and expert surveys to find the priority of expressway safety treatments for older drivers. RESULTS : Through survey results it was found that merging areas and tunnels were identified as the most dangerous areas, and more dangerous older driver behaviors were observed on those expressway segments in the driving simulator experiments. In addition, the priorities of safety treatments for each segment of expressways were decided based on expert surveys. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that choice and concentration strategies of expressway safety treatments for older drivers should be applied as perceptions regarding dangerous spots and older driver behaviors, including geometric designs, safety facilities, regulation, and institutes to improve expressway safety.

화물차 군집주행 간격에 따른 운전자의 운전수행능력별 심리상태 및 주행안전성 비교 연구 (Comparative Analysis of the Psychological State and Driving Safety for Driving within the Platoons of Trucks by Drivers Driving Performance)

  • 화물차 군집주행 차량과 일반차량이 혼재된 상황은 불안정한 교통흐름을 유발하여 소통뿐만 아니라, 안전성 측면에서 부정적인 영향을 미칠 가능성이 높다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 화물차 군집주행 기술 상용화시, 그 주변을 주행하는 운전자의 심리상태와 주행안전성에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 도로주행 시뮬레이터를 활용하여 군집주행 대열로 끼어드는 상황과 군집주행대열 내에서 주행하는 상황으로 실험환경을 구성하였으며, 모의주행 실험을 통해 운전자의 심리상태와 주행안전성에 대해 정성적·정량적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 운전수행능력이 상대적으로 저하되는 운전자 그룹의 경우, 군집내 끼어들기 또는 군집내 주행에서 위험한 상황을 야기했음에도 불구하고, 스스로 안전하게 주행했다고 판단한 경우가 많았다. 특히, 차량간격이 좁을수록 오인지 비율이 크게 증대하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 연결로 구간 등 화물차의 군집주행 간격을 일시적으로 넓혀야하는 경우 최적간격을 도출하거나, 군집주행/일반차량 분리방안 등 비자율차량 운전자를 위한 교통관리 전략을 수립하는데 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

화물차 DTG 데이터를 활용한 고속도로 졸음운전 위험구간 분석 (The Hazardous Expressway Sections for Drowsy Driving Using Digital Tachograph in Truck)

  • 지난 10년 간 졸음운전은 전체 고속도로 사고건수의 약 23%로 교통사고 사망원인 중 가장 높은 비중을 차지하고 있다. 과속, 주시태만 등 운전자 과실이 주요원인인 일반적인 사고유형과 달리, 졸음운전은 졸음이라는 불가항력적 원인에 의해 발생한다는 점에서 타 사고유형과 차별화된 접근이 요구된다. 그 동안의 졸음운전 감소대책은 일반적인 교통사고 대책과 마찬가지로 사고다발지점과 같은 특정지점(spot)에 집중하였으나, 도로특성(해당구간의 화물차 비율 등) 또는 시간특성(누적주행시간에 따른 위험 운전행동 증가 등)을 고려한 감소대책이 필요함에 따라, 본 연구에서는 시 공간적으로 확대한 구간(link) 개념을 도입하였다. 고속도로 졸음운전 위험구간 분석을 위해 화물차 디지털 운행기록계(digital tacho graph: DTG) 자료를 활용하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 졸음운전 위험구간을 산정하였다. 위험 행동지표와 사고 발생건수 간의 상관 분석을 위해 음이항 회귀모형(negative binomial regression)을 통한 졸음사고 예측모형을 추정하였으며 모형의 결과 값을 바탕으로 경험적 베이즈(empirical Bayes: EB) 추정치와 구간별 잠재적 안전개선 지수(potential for safety improvement: PSI)를 산출하여 졸음운전 위험 구간을 선정하였다. 졸음사고 모형 추정 결과, 연평균 일교통량, 화물차 비율, DTG 수집 자료건수, 평균 과속비율(20km/h 초과), 평균 급감속비율 및 평균 급차로변경비율이 늘어날 경우 졸음운전 사고건수 역시 증가하는 것으로 분석되었다.

고속도로 노면표시 감속유도시설 효과평가 (Effectiveness of the Peripheral Transverse Line as Speed-Reduction Treatment on Korean Expressway Ramps)

  • PURPOSES : Since expressways in South Korea are toll roads, many trumpet type interchanges exist, resulting in the installation of loop ramps very frequently. While the travel speed of the main lane is designed to be 100-110 km/h, the structure of a loop ramp is different and is designed for a minimum speed of 40 km/h. In fact, most of the actual travel speeds measured on the ramp exceed the designated speed, which has been a major problem in traffic safety. In this research, a type of pavement marking speed-reduction treatment called the "Peripheral Transverse Line" is installed on expressway loop ramps in order to study the change of driving speeds after the installation. METHODS : To verify statistically the change, this speed-reduction treatment has been installed on the Chungju interchange and the Yeoju junction. The driving speeds before the installation were compared with driving speeds both one month and five monthsafter the installation. RESULTS : As a result, the reductions of the average driving speeds after the treatment were statistically significant. More specifically, the average driving speeds of the Chungju interchange were reduced by 7.1-7.7 % for its tangent road section, and the speeds decreased by 8.5-9.5 % for its curve section. Similarly, in the Yeoju junction, an average speed reduction of 2.9-4.8 % for its tangent section was measured, along with 3.9% long-term speed reduction for its curve section. CONCLUSIONS : Since the pavement marking speed-reduction treatment has been partially proven to be effective from this research, we expect to expand this treatment and re-confirm the effect from a long-term perspective in the future.

Comparisons of Traffic Collisions between Expressways and Rural Roads in Truck Drivers

  • Background: Truck driving is known as one of the occupations with the highest accident rate. This study investigates the characteristics of traffic collisions according to road types (expressway and rural road). Methods: Classifying 267 accidents into expressway and rural road, we analyzed them based on driver characteristics (age, working experience, size of employment), time characteristics (day of accident, time, weather), and accident characteristics (accident causes, accident locations, accident types, driving conditions). Results: When we compared the accidents by road conditions, no differences were found between the driver characteristics. However, from the accident characteristics, the injured person distributions were different by the road conditions. In particular, driving while drowsy is shown to be highly related with the accident characteristics. Conclusion: This study can be used as a guideline and a base line to develop a plan of action to prevent traffic accidents. It can also help to prepare formal regulations about a truck driver's vehicle maintenance and driving attitude for a precaution on road accidents.

조건부 가치측정법을 이용한 고속도로 졸음운전 교통사고 예방 캠페인 편익 추정 (Estimation of the Benefit from the Campaign to Prevent Drowsy Driving Crashes Using a Contingent Valuation Method)

  • PURPOSES : This study was initiated to estimate the benefits from the campaign to prevent drowsy driving crashes on expressways. The study was conducted by the Korea Expressway Corporation using a contingent valuation method. METHODS : First, a questionnaire was designed for a preliminary survey. From the survey's results, the initial willingness to pay for the campaign was determined by averaging different amounts of payments chosen under virtual scenarios in the survey. The willingness to pay data was used to find a first bid price for the open-ended method used for the second survey. After that, a primary questionnaire was designed and conducted using a single dichotomous choice question (SDBCQ). Drivers at expressway resting areas were asked their willingness to pay for the campaign. Based on statistical analysis using data collected from the second survey, the mean willingness to pay was estimated using a probability utility function. Finally, the benefit from the campaign was calculated using the estimated willingness to pay and accident data on expressways. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result from the contingent valuation method, the benefit from the campaign to prevent drowsy driving crashes was estimated to be 170.6 won per expressway trip. The benefit is to be paid as an additional toll. In addition, the traffic crash cost estimate is about 2,209,680,000 won less than the cost during the same period in 2014.

고속도로 주행 중 제동장치 리턴스프링 결함으로 발생한 트럭화재의 분석 (Analysis of the Truck Fire Caused by Return Spring Defect of a Braking System during Expressway Driving)

  • Most truck fires breaking out on the expressway are directly damaged by fire destruction of truck and freight and many of them cause indirect damage such as serious traffic holdups. This study analyzed the fire causes and their liability of the 25-ton truck fire breaking out during expressway driving. This truck fire was caused by manufacturing defect of return spring of a braking system. The fire liability rested with a maker(manufacturer) rather than a truck owner or a driver and the maker also bore fire liability based on the Product Liability Law.

  • The KIER expressway mode was constructed from actual speed-versus-time traces generated by an instrumented test car driven a variety of expressways. This mode reflects the correct proportion of operation on each of the six expressways and preserves the non-steady-state characteristics of real driving. The average speed of the mode is 79.43 km/h and the mode length is 16.22 km.

가상주행 시뮬레이터를 활용한 고속도로 차로유도선 적정 연장길이 산정 연구 (An Evaluation on the Length of Guidance Lane Marking on Expressways Using Virtual Driving Simulator)

  • 국내 육상교통망의 중추적인 역할을 하는 고속도로는 $7{\times}9$ 형태로 양적, 질적 성장을 거듭하고 있다. 점차 복잡해지는 고속도로 기하구조에 대응하고자 차로유도선을 설치하여 운전자들의 보다 원활한 차로 변경을 유도하고 있으나 해당 시설의 설치기준이 부재하고, 그 효과 검증 또한 제한적으로 시행되고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구는 도로주행 시뮬레이터를 활용하여 주행안전성 측면에서 차로유도선의 효과를 재조명하고, 적정 연장 설치기준을 수립하는데 주된 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 위해, 피험자의 선호도를 조사하고, 가상의 주행환경에서 운전자의 차로 변경 행태를 분석하였다. 또한, 피험자가 차로변경 시 느끼는 편안함 정도를 계량화하기 위해 뇌파분석을 실시하였고, 도출된 결과에 대한 통계적 검증을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 차로유도선 설치기준 수립 시 기반자료로 활용될 것으로 기대한다.
