The Effect of the Introduction of the Express Highspeed Railway in Korea

  • Purpose - In today's era of carbon neutrality, railways need to find ways to improve usability and efficiency. Accordingly, this study examines the effect of introducing express highspeed railways into the Korean public transportation system and suggests some practical guidelines. One concern in the Korea railway sector is that low scheduled speeds contrast with the highspeed railway system design. Research design, data, and methodology - Current literature and foreign cases are analyzed. Subsequently, using data from the Korean Railroad Research Institute, a benefit analysis is conducted based on expanded track capacity and the saving of time owing to the introduction of the express highspeed railway. Result - The express highspeed railway system is expected to increase the number of train lines from 262 to 348 and the scheduled speed from 168.3km/h to 192.2km/h. Considering reduced time value, the economic effect is about 80 million won per year. Conclusion - The findings suggest that the express highspeed railway is a promising option to improve efficiency and increase customer utility. This study contributes to the literature by initiating a discussion on the express system in Korea; practically, it offers railway operators guidelines for improving highspeed railway system efficiency that can be transformed into a variety of marketing options.

A Study on the Customer-based Pricing Approach for Railway Fare of Express Train

  • Purpose - Among the various pricing approaches used to set fares for express trains, this study explores a method of utilizing a customer-based pricing approach. The purpose of this study is to figure out how to apply the customer-based pricing approach to fares of new railway services using express trains. Research design, data, and methodology - This study was conducted through a literature review and case studies. In the literature review, we examined three approaches, focusing on the customer-based pricing approach and its application. In the case studies, we show how a customer-based pricing approach can be applied to determining the fares for railway services. Result - Some studies have used a customer-based pricing approach to set railway service rates, adapting the concepts of customer-based pricing such as demand, elasticity, value and willingness to pay. When setting fares of new railway services, it is recommended to use the customer-based approach in conjunction with other pricing approaches. Conclusion - This study demonstrates that a customer-based pricing approach is a promising tool in making decisions on railway fares. By applying a customer-based pricing approach to fares for new railway services using express trains, railway operators can utilize new service rates and increase the profitability of the railway business.

  • This paper shows the institutional limits of technological innovation at the railway package service, that is the limits of introducing the package express system. The railway package service, owned by government and operated by D company, has been suffered severe operating loss since early 1990's. The package express system supported by information network and co-working with inner city quick service might be an solution for the railway package service. But there are several obstacles such as labor union and the rigidities of the Korean National Railroad of government agency.

  • In internationalization age, growth plan of a railway have to research with the opening of a train express and connection with a transcontinental railway. Especially, in the opening of a train express, the North Korea is located in an important place. So the North Korea must research for growth of railway of the South Korea. This study make an investigation the present condition of railway of the North Korea into a report, paper, article etc.. And then, it make a comparative study with a case study of Germany. Then, a policy object, have to be stand at the head in the opening of a train express, exhibited.

광역철도 노선의 급행화 가능성에 대한 기술적 검토 (Technical Study on Possibility of an Express Service Wide Area Railway)

  • 기존 수도권 광역철도는 운행시간이 많이 걸리는 완행 위주의 운행을 하기 때문에 통행시간 측면에서 타 교통수단과의 경쟁력이 저하되고 있는 실정이고, 도로교통을 철도로 유인하는데 한계가 있기 때문에 급행열차 운행을 확대 운영해야 한다는 사회적 요구가 지속되고 있다. 특히 수도권 북부와 수도권 남서부 방면은 대도시 생활권 확대로 광역교통수요 증대에 따른 교통 혼잡 가중 및 통행시간 증가 등 사회적 비용이 과다 발생되고 있어 서울도심을 연결하는 급행 기능의 대중교통망체계가 필요하다. 국내에서 가장 효율적으로 급행화를 운행하는 노선은 서울지하철 9호선이며, 김포공항에서 고속터미널까지 27분 소요됨으로써 완행 44분 대비 약 40% 시간 단축 효과가 있고 혼잡도가 최대 240%에 달할 만큼 이용객의 선호도가 상당히 높다. 본 연구의 기술적 결과들은 광역철도의 급행화 방안의 수행을 위해 기여할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

  • The launch of KTX (Korea Train Express) has brought the changes of people's life. People can get more time to work or enjoy leisure comfortably because the transfer time is decreased. According to these changes, the role of normal trains and express trains' drivers is getting more important. The purpose of this study is to suggest the advanced vision of Korean railway through comparing the domestic driver's qualification requirements of normal trains and express trains with international ones which are more developed.

공항철도 전동차의 승차감 측정 (A Ride Quality Measurement of Rolling Stock used in Airport Railway)

  • A ride quality measurement was carried out for commuter and express train used in airport railway. Lateral and vertical directional average ride quality level is higher than that of longitudinal direction. Because express train is faster than commuter train, the average ride quality level of express train is higher compared to that of commuter train. The average ride quality level of commuter train is between 'good comfortable($100{\sim}105dB$)' and 'very good comfortable(below 100dB)'. The average ride quality level of express train is between 'not comfortable($105{\sim}110dB$)' and 'good comfortable($100{\sim}105dB$)'. In spite of the scheduled speed is higher(more than 70km/h for commuter train, more than 80km/h for express train) than other lines, the ride quality of airport railway train is good. The reason is that there is little gradient in rail and the radius of curvature is larger compared to that of other lines.

What the GTX and Grand Paris projects can learn from each other

  • Paris has one of the world's oldest metropolitan railway systems and was also a pioneer when it introduced the RER in the 70s. With planning objectives comparable to the GTX, the RER aimed at serving outer suburbs while fully crossing the city center at higher speeds than the Metro. Maybe more relevant is the comparison between the planned Grand Paris Express and GTX projects, in terms of their planning ambitions and their development framework. This article will introduce the main planning ideas behind the Metro and the RER in Paris, and try to draw relevant comparisons with the GTX plan. It will also present the plans and financing framework for the Grand Paris Express and compare it with the BTO scheme contemplated for GTX, and draw some recommendations for successful implementation.

경기도권 철도체계의 문제점과 개선방안 - 노선축, 영업, 급행화를 중심으로 (Improving Methods of Metropolitan Railways in Gyeonggi-do - Focusing on Route, Operation and Express Service)

  • Although Gyeonggi-do is the core area which has a quarter of the population of Korea, it has poor railway network and then it have got serious traffic problem. So in this paper, it is introduced the improving methods of railways on Gyeonggi-do. In first, it was showed a fast and effective railway route implementation according to the characteristics with the similar population but the 17 times bigger area than that of Seoul. And it was explained multipurpose using method of the railways of Gyeonggi-do whit subway, commuter, express and high speed train etc. Finally unlike Seoul subway focusing on approachability, it was proposed 'express train paradigm' focusing on implementing the high movability which railways of Gyeonggi-do must have. So with 'Bundang-line' metropolitan railway, the case study in applying to southern metropolitan area with those suggestion was showed.
