Exposure factors based on the Korean population are required for making appropriate risk assessment. It is expected that handbooks for exposure factors will be applied in many fields, as well as by health department risk assessors. The present article describes the development of an exposure factors handbook that specifically focuses on human activities in situations involving the possible risk of exposure to environmental contaminants. We define majour exposure factors that represent behavioral patterns for risk assessment, including time spent on routine activities, in different places, on using transportation, and engaged in activities related to water contact including swimming, bathing and washing. Duration of residence and employment are also defined. National survey data were used to identify recommended levels of exposure factors in terms of time spent on routine activities and period of residence and employment. An online survey was conducted with 2073 subjects who were selected using a stratified random sampling method in order to develop a list of exposure factors for the time spent in different places and in performing water-related activities. We provide the statistical distribution of the variables, and report reference levels of average exposure based on the reliable data in our exposure factors handbook.
The personal exposures of nitrogen dioxide(NO$_2$), microenvironmental levels and daily time activity patterns on Seoul subway station workers were measured from February 10 to March 12, 1999. Personal NO$_2$exposure for 24 hours were 29.40$\pm$9.75 ppb. NO$_2$level of occupational environment were 27.87$\pm$7.15 ppb in office, 33.60$\pm$8.64 ppb in platform and 50.13$\pm$13.04 ppb in outdoor. Personal exposure time of subway station workers was constituted as survey results with $7.94\pm$3.00 hours in office, $2.82\pm$1.63 hours in platform and 1 hours in outdoor. With above results, personal $NO_2$exposure distributions on subway station workers in Seoul were estimated with Monte Carlo simulation which uses statistical probabilistic theory on various exposure scenario testing. Some of distributions which did not have any formal patterns were assumed as custom distribution type. Estimated personal occupational $NO_2$exposure using time weighted average (TWA) model was 31.$29\pm$5.57 ppb, which were under Annual Ambient Standard (50ppb) of Korea. Though arithmetic means of measured personal $NO_2$exposure was lower than that of occupational $NO_2$exposure estimated by TWA model, considering probability distribution type simulated, probability distribution of measured personal $NO_2$exposures for 24 hours was over ambient standard with 3.23%, which was higher than those of occupational exposure(0.02%). Further research is needed for reducing these 24 hour $NO_2$personal excess exposures besides occupational exposure on subway station workers in Seoul.
Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to assess firefighters' daily personal noise exposure and explore noise levels related to specific tasks and their contributions to total noise exposure using 24-hour full-shift noise exposure measurements with task-based data. Methods: Noise exposure was assessed for eight firefighters (two rescuers, two drivers, and four suppressors) using time-activity diaries. We collected a total of 24 full-shift personal noise sample sets (three samples per a firefighter). The 24-hour shift-adjusted daily personal noise exposure level (Lep,d), eight weekly personal noise exposures (Leq,w), and 40 task-specific Leq values (Leq activity) were calculated via the ISO/NIOSH method. Results: The firefighter noise-sample datasets showed that most firefighters are exposed to noise levels above EU recommended levels at a low-action value. The highest noise exposure was for rescuers, followed by drivers and suppressors. Noise measurements with time-at-task information revealed that 82.3% of noise exposure occurred when checking equipment and responding to fire or emergency calls. Conclusions: The results indicate that firefighters are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Therefore, efforts at noise-control are necessary for their protection. This task-specific noise exposure assessment also shows that protective measures should be focused on certain tasks, such as checking and testing equipment.
This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of three high-exposure tasks performed by radiation workers in Korean pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and to identify factors that reduce their exposure during work. Three high-exposure tasks were selected based on a previous study. In this previous study, nozzle dam installation and removal, eddy current testing, and manway opening and closing were determined as high-exposure tasks through normalization (radiation dose per unit time). Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the high-exposure tasks in this study, the high-exposure tasks were steam generator-related tasks performed inside and outside the water chamber. This study analyzed the reduction factors for high-exposure tasks and suggested improvements in terms of time, distance, and shielding. The use of the characteristics of high-exposure tasks and their dose reduction factors enables Korean PWRs to optimize radiation protection for workers who receive relatively high doses.
The concentrations of $SO_2$ and $SO_3$ were measured to estimate a new developed long time exposure $SO_2$ sampler at Onsan industrial area considering the meteorological factors from June to October, 1992. The mean concentration of $SO_3$ by $PbO_2$ method was 0.924 mg $SO_3 / 10cm^2$$PbO_2$/day and their high values were shown in the center of the industrial area, which show potential pollution due to the increase of industrial activities and micrometeorological factors in and around the sites. As a result of statistical correlation between $SO_2$ concentration by new sampling method and $SO_3$ concentration by $PbO_2$ method in July and August, 1992, correlation coefficients were high (r=0.87, 0.91) and shown more than 0.83 value in the high concentration data set, which was arbitrarily divided into 7~10${\mu}l$$SO_2$ concentration in an attempt to further investigate these relationships. Therefore, use of new developed long time exposure TEX>$SO_2$ sampler is good for TEX>$SO_2$ measurement and valuable for estimation of air quality in the urban and industrial area. Key Words : a new developed long time exposure TEX>$SO_2$ sampler, correlation coefficients, high, $SO_2$ measurement, estimation of air Quality.
Objectives: Time location data are critical for accurately estimating personal exposures. This review papers summarized various measurement methods of time location pattern for air pollution exposure assessment. Methods: Forty manuscripts (papers, books and reports) were reviewed to comprehensively describe time location measurement methods. Results: This review included traditional methods such as time activity diary, questionnaire, observation, focus group and newly developed technical methods including global positioning system, web, radio frequency identification and ultrasound detection. Some research applied a combination of methods. Conclusion: Although various methods have been used to collect time location data, further development of accurate measurement methods for time location data is needed.
The aim of this paper was to prove that if the risk level in combined tasks was improved through evaluation of postural load of liquid weight measurement process, the workload level and ratio of exposure time would be changed, and the time of process would be seen concurrently. Background: According to results of epidemiological studies conducted by Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, 122 musculoskeletal disorders occurred during 1992 to 2008, in which manufacturing industry covers 96(78.7%) of total. However, this is an insufficient level and only occupies 39% based on the South Korea's manufacturing standard industrial classification(246 industries). Method: Firstly, the number of batches weighed on one day(460min) was investigated based on the work performed and Weight measured weekly. VCR recording was taken based on the level of liquid ingredients prescribed for 1batch using the Camcorder. After dividing a 356 sec video into 1 sec using the screen capture function in Gom player, the job classification was performed by analyzing the change of working postures, which revealed 148 working postures. Time measurement was decided by time of the postures was being maintained. Then, the REBA analysis was performed for the working postures. The ratio of Exposure time was calculated based on the measurement time and REBA Score. In addition, the recommendations were designed and implementation was carried out for the working postures with REBA Score higher than 3. Finally, after the intervention, REBA measurement, time measurement, and ratio of exposure time were calculated for the comparison of works before and after improvement. Results: The number of work elements was decreased by 30.4% from 148 to 103 after improvement. The results of time measurement showed that the time was reduced by 46.3% from 356 sec to 191 sec. And the ratio of exposure time was also improved by 52.1% from 0% to 52.1% after improvement. Conclusion: The reduction of time was found to improve the productivity of management. Furthermore, because the reduction of ratio of exposure time and the improvement of workload level are the improvement of discomfort, it would contribute to the improvement of the worker's psychological working posture. Application: These results would contribute to musculoskeletal disease prevention and management performance. Further studies for other industries would be needed based on this case study.

In this paper, a new method to implement the photopolymer-based VHOE using the optimized exposure time schedule is proposed. The cumulative grating strength dependence on the exposure energy is mathematically modeled by using the fourth-order polynomial function and then using this model, the optimized exposure-time schedule of the photopolymer for recording the given multiple gratings is calculated.
This paper deals with a characteristic of output for high frequency resonant inverter type x-ray generator in short exposure time. In the same tube-voltage, the waveform is stable in long exposure time (200msec) but more decreasing exposure time (50msec), the waveform is distorted. The ripple factor of tube-voltage waveform distorted more and more increase tube-voltage and in this case output is also unstable. High-frequency resonant inverter type X-ray generator using PSU source which introduced in resent is stable tube-voltage waveform and low ripple factor.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the workloads of industrial and automobile storage battery industries and their association to biological exposure indices. Background: Occupational lead exposure at battery manufacturing workplace is the most serious problem in safety and health management. Method: We surveyed 145 workers in 3 storage battery industries. Environmental factors(lead in air, temperature, humidity and vibration)), biological exposure indices(lead in blood and zinc protoporphyrin in blood) and individual workload factors(process type, work time, task type, weight handling and restrictive clothing) were measured in each unit workplace. Results/Conclusion: Air lead concentration is statistically significant in associations with workload factors(process type, work time, task type, and restrictive clothing) and environmental factors (humidity and vibration), whereas zinc protoporphyrin in blood are significantly associated with work time and weight handling. And lead in blood is significantly associated with work time, weight handling and temperature. Application: The results of this study are expected to be a fundamental data to job design.
