The present study was conducted to investigate the attributes of ram sexual behaviour under different social conditions. Six intact rams and eight overiectomized ewes were used in this experiment. Ewes were artificially brought into oestrus. All mating traits were recorded every 10 sec during a 1 h mating session under five social conditions viz., ram exposed to single oestrus ewe, ram exposed to single oestrus ewe and audience ram, ram exposed to multiple oestrus ewes, ram exposed to single oestrus ewe with competitor ram and ram exposed to multiple oestrus ewes with competitor ram. Mean intensity of the mating activities during the 1 h mating session under five social conditions was compared. Either vocalization or leg kicking was found to be the predominant teasing activity under all five conditions. Sniffing differed significantly (p<0.05) between different social conditions. Vocalization, leg kicking, and leg kicking with vocalization did not differ significantly (p<0.05) between different social conditions. Mounts/h in the multiple oestrus ewe condition was higher and differed significantly (p<0.05) from other social conditions. Ejaculations/h for the experimental ram was higher when exposed to multiple oestrus ewes in comparison to other social conditions. Mounts/ejaculation was low in the audience ram condition in comparison to the other four social conditions.
Purpose: The study aimed at monitoring the immune status of health care workers (HCWs) of a tertiary hospital after accidental exposure to Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Methods: Between January 2004 and December 2006, 353 cases of exposure to Hepatitis B virus were reported. The HBV-exposed HCWs were required to undergo follow-up serum tests to analyze their immune status one year after the exposure. The obtained data were then analyzed to determine the incidence of exposure and of sero-conversion. Results: In this hospital, an average of 9.8 cases of Hepatitis B exposure among HCWs was reported in a month. Follow-up tests conducted after exposure revealed that 90.4% of the HBV-exposed HCWs were positive for Hepatitis B antibody and 66.9% of the HBV-exposed HCWs were reported to have antibody levels exceeding 10 mIU/mL. Results of serum tests for the HBV antigen conducted one year after exposure were negative for all the exposed HCWs. Conclusion: Among the 79.6% of the HCWs who underwent serum tests one year after exposure the HBV sero-conversion rate was 0.0%. However, a further investigation in the form of long-term and multi-center studies is required to confirm this result. Furthermore, an active system should be established to ensure that all exposed HCWs undergo follow-up serum tests.
Changes in the release and uptake of glutamate in cerebellar granule and glial cells of offspring of lead-exposed mothers were determined. In cultured cerebellar granule cells exposed to lead for 5 days, glutamate release was less influenced upon N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) stimulation than that in the control. Although the NMDA-stimulated release of glutamate in cerebellar granule cells prepared from lead-exposed first generation pups was not different from that of the control group, the S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP)-stimulated release of glutamate in cerebellar granule cells obtained from lead-treated pups was less elevated than that in the control. Furthermore, in cerebellar granule cells obtained from lead-exposed second generations pups, glutamate release did not respond to both NMDA and SNAP stimulation. In cerebellar glial cells exposed to lead, the basal glutamate uptake was not changed. However, the L-trans-pyrollidine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid (PDC)-blocking effects was significantly reduced. In glial cells obtained from lead-exposed pups, the glutamate uptake was also less blocked by PDC than that in the control. Further decreases in PDC-blocking effects were observed in cerebellar glial cells obtained from lead-treated second generation pups compared to those from the control group. These results indicate that lead exposure induces the changes in the sensitivities of the glutamate release and uptake transporter. In addition, these results suggest that lead exposure might affect the intracellular signalling pathway and transmission in glutamatergic nervous system.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the noise level from the machines used for tunnel construction and to analyze the noise exposure level of workers engaged in tunneling works. The sound level meter and noise dosimeters was used for the monitoring of noise in the tunneling work sites. The average noise from jumbo drill was 113.0 dE(A), the noise from pay loader was 92.4 dB(A), the noise from backhoe was 99.9 dB(A) and the noise from shotcrete machine was 94.3 dE(A). The tunneling workers were exposed to 66.9~94.9 dB(A) of noise and other workers exposed to less than 90 dB(A) of noise. Jumbo drill operators were exposed to to 82.5~84.2 dB(A) of noise, backhoe operators were exposed to 70.2~94.9 dB(A) of noise, shotcrete machine operators were exposed to 68.2~74.7 dB(A) of noise and pay loader operators were exposed to 59.2~81.3 dE(A) of noise.
The present study was investigated the effects of chlorine dioxide ($CIO_2$) on the rcspimtory metabolism of olive flounder (Parolichlhys olivaceus) imtermittently exposed to seawater chlorinated by $CIO_2$:. Oxygen consumption of flounder before and after once or twice $CIO_2$-treatment with 12 hr- or/and 24 hr-interval were serially measured with automatic intenniteent-flow respirometer system (AIRS). The oxygen consumption rates of flowKier exposed to 0.10 and 0.20 ppm$CIO_2$, were not different from the control fish prior to the once or twice chlorinations . On the other hand, the respiratory metabolic rates of flounder exposed to 0.30 ppm$CIO_2$ were significantly increased 15% and 22 - 23% after the once and twice chlorinations compared to the control fish. respectively. The flounder exposed In 0.40 and 0.50 ppm$CIO_2$: died within 4 hr and I hr. respectively. The elevation( respiratory metabolism in flounder exposed toO.30 ppm$CIO_2$ and above is considered due to physiological stress caused by $CIO_2$ exposure.

This study was carried on to investigate the effect of physiological significance of hand and foot on thermoregulation and thermal pleasantness in clothed $\mu$ Oral and skin temperatures after immersing hands and feet in the cold or the warm water at Ta of 25 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, were compared with four types of garment worn by two healthy male subjects. Four types of gannent expressed as A, B, C, D, were determined by the exposed areas of extremities : hands only are exposed in A, feet only are exposed in B, both hands and forearms are exposed in C, and both feet and legs are exposed in D. Major findings observed reveals that oral temperatures in D were generally maintained higher than those in A, B, and C. This is probably because the size of exposed areas rather than skin temperatures seem to determine the level of core temperature. Also, obtained result that thermal sensations felt by the subjects in foot are more closely related to local skin temperatures when they are compared to those in hand. From these findings it would be suggested that the significance of hand and foot in temperature regulation appears to be connected more with behavioral than with physiological.
Yellow sand (or Asian dust) occurs mainly in spring in East Asia. Yellow sand from China and its surrounding regions transports air pollutants, such as aerosols, ozone, and heavy metals. The outdoor workers are frequently exposed to heavy metals during yellow sand phenomenon. This study was carried out to investigate the heavy metal levels in blood among 75 outdoor workers (exposed group) and 86 indoor workers (controled group) in Gyeonggi province from March 2008 to May 2009. Heavy metal levels in blood were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Mean blood lead levels in exposed group and controled group were $5.19{\pm}1.64{\mu}g/dL$, $4.24{\pm}1.34{\mu}g/dL$, respectively. Mean blood cadmium levels in exposed group and controled group were $1.28{\pm}0.89{\mu}g/dL$, $0.90{\pm}0.59{\mu}g/dL$, respectively. Lead and Cadmium levels in blood of exposed group were significantly higher than those of controled group. In the comparison of smoking status, lead and cadmium levels of smokers were significantly higher than those of non-smokers. In conclusion, the heavy metal levels of outdoor workers were significantly higher than those of indoor workers. And smoking was hazardous factor to elevate heavy metal levels in blood.
This experimental study shows the thermal characteristics of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing exposed to the radiation heat. From the test results, the surface temperature of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing exposed to the radiation with the passage of time sharply increased as the exposed-distance became closer. Also as the radiant heat flux increased, the surface temperature is higher and the time reaching steady state is sharply shorter. As the exposed-distance become more distant, the surface temperature of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing decreased and the difference of temperature between the front side and the back side of the clothing decreased as well. Besides, the radiant heat flux increased, the safety exposed-distance increased. Therefore it is necessary that fire fighter have to work keeping a fixed safe distance from the radiant heat source.
Cerebellar granule and glial cells prepared from 7 day-old rat pups were used to investigate the effects of sub-acute nicotine exposure on the glutamatergic nervous system. These cells were exposed to nicotine in various concentrations for 2 to 10 days in situ. Nicotine-exposure did not result in any changes in cerebellar granule and glial cell viability at concentrations of up to 500 $\mu\textrm{M}$. In cerebellar granule cells, the basal extracellular levels of glutamate, aspartate and glycine were enhanced in the nicotine-exposed granule cells. In addition, the responses of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced glutamate release were enhanced at low NMDA concentrations in the nicotine-exposed granule cells. However, this decreased at higher NMDA concentrations. The glutaminase activity was increased after nicotine exposure. In cerebellar glial cells, glutamate uptake in the nicotine-exposed glial cells were either increased at low nicotine exposure levels or decreased at higher levels. The inhibition of glutamate uptake by L-trans-pyrollidine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid (PDC) was lower in glial cells exposed to 50 $\mu\textrm{M}$ nicotine. Glutamine synthetase activity was lower in glial cells exposed to 100 or 500 $\mu\textrm{M}$ of nicotine. These results indicate that the properties of cerebellar granule and glial cells may alter after subacute nicotine exposure. Furthermore, they suggest that nicotine exposure during development may modulate glutamatergic nervous activity.
