  • This study deals with the concept of Microcomputer Playfulness(MCP), Even though MCP was introduced recently in the MIS research, the concept is expected and empirically supported to be significant in explaining information technology adoption and usage. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), this study presented a revised model to explain individual PC use and explored the role of MCP in PC use. The results showed that MCP has a direct influence on PC use rather than a mediator between Self-efficacy and PC use, and that MCP is a better predictor of PC use than Computer Anxiety.

  • This paper focuses on a sociologic approach, the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen 1991) and a sociolinguistic field, the language shift (Fishman 1991, Crystal 2000). It describes the theoretical background of language shift and briefly mentions the history of Hungarian language and Romanian language contacts. After presenting language use of the Hungarian minority students and explaining the theory of planned behavior, it turns to apply the theory of planned behavior to the language shift from the view of bilingual speaker(s). This paper wants to propose the application of the theory of planned behavior in language shift and open new perspective in bilingual research.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate relationships among self-care, self-efficacy and social support in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Method: The subjects were 114 patients with COPD from both inpatient and outpatient department sin a branch hospital of C university located in Gyeonggi-do from April 2005 to May 2005. Self-care was measured by No Hyeon-Suk's (2003) scale, self-efficacy was measured by Wigal et al's (1991) scale, social support was measured by Park Sun-Ju's (2001) scale. Data were analyzed by using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The total mean was 3.1 for self-care, 3.5 for self-efficacy, and 4.3 for social support. The levels of self-efficacy and social support were significantly and positively correlated with the level of self-care. The level of self-care was influenced by social support explaining 16% and the level of self-efficacy explaining 6%, giving a total of 22%. Conclusion: The result of this study showed that the patients with COPD carried out self-care better when they had higher levels of self-efficacy and social support. Thus, we will improve the level of self-care of patients with COPD by nursing intervention to increase self-efficacy and social support.

  • This research intends to examine how 6th graders (age 12) conceptualize the area of geometric figures. In this research, 4 problems were given to 122 students, which the 4 problems correspond to understanding area concept, finding the area of geometric figures-including rectangular, parallelogram, and triangle, writing the area formula for finding area of geometric figures, and explaining the reason why the area formula holds. As the results of the study, we identified that students revealed the most low achievement in the understanding area concept, and lower achievement in explaining the reason why the area formula holds, writing the area formula, finding the area of geometric figures in order. In based on the results, we suggested the didactical implication for improving the students' conception about the area of geometric figures.

  • This study examined the relationship among temperament, social support and hope of institutionalized children. A total of 198 children, aged 10 to 13, recruited from 20 institutions in Seoul participated. Demographics, temperament, social support from friends, institution-family and school teacher, and hope were assessed by self-report. Results showed that in bivariate level, temperament and social support were significantly associated with level of hope. However, hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that children's hope was predicted only by age and social support from friends, institution-family and school teacher. That is, temperament was not contributed to predict hope, whilst social support contributed unique variance to the prediction of hope, controlling for age. The more social support the children felt they had, the higher levels of hope they reported. Further analyses revealed that support from friends, institution-family and school teacher were influential factors in explaining hope agency, while support from institution-family and school teacher were influential factors in explaining hope pathway of institutionalized children, controlling for age.

  • Subject : The application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology of Korean Medicine. Objective : This study suggests physiological theories in child birth in Korean Medicine. Method : First, the application of eight extra Meridians and extraordinary organs theories to physiology, pathology, pregnancy, postnatal period of women were examined based on major publications and theories of some historical characters. This work provided clues for application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology. Second, the progressing birth physiology of modern medicine based on the importance of the brain function was examined, with which the application of eight extra Meridians and extraordinary organs theories to the birth process showed close relationship. Conclusion : The following conclusions could be drawn. In traditional publications of Korean Medicine, the contents explaining birth physiology with eight extra Meridians theory were scarce, mainly due to the doctor's perception of birth as part of the natural female physiology along with menstruation and pregnancy. However, the contents explaining menstruation, pregnancy, postnatal physiology and pathology through eight extra Meridians theory could be found in classical texts such as Neijing, Jebyeong-wonhuron, Imjeunginameuian. Therefore, it is reasonable to apply the eight extra Meridians theory to the birth process as well. Modern medicine's understanding that pituitary and hypothalamus hormones are in play on womb in the birth process, such as Oxytocin, is in continuous progress. Moreover, the environmental condition that has been traditionally known ideal to the birth process in both the East and West-dark, warm, quiet and secluded-is being confirmed in modern research. The application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology can help to explain these modern information, and thus make them more acceptable.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of children's temperament, parent-child communication, peer relationships on children's cognitive and affective happiness. The participants consisted of 396 elementary school students aged 10-13 dwelling in Jeonbuk province. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, regression analysis using the SPSS 18.0 program. The most salient results from this study were as follows: first, there were statistically significant differences in the children's happiness according to academic performance and family's economic level; children who considered themselves to have good grades and to have a higher standard of living were happier than other groups. However, there was no significant difference in children's happiness in relation to gender. Second, children's temperament(sociability, activity), parent-child open communication and peer relationships were positively associated with the children's cognitive and affective happiness. Children's emotional temperament, parent-child problem communication were negatively associated with the children's cognitive and affective happiness. Third, as the results of regression analysis, parent-child open communication, children's temperament(activity, sociability), peer relationships were considered to be the most influential factors in explaining cognitive happiness. And parent-child open communication, parent-child problem communication, children's temperament(activity) were influential factors in explaining affective happiness. In conclusion, children's happiness is critically affected not only by internal variables but also environmental ones such as parents and peers.

  • The present study was designed to answer the following questions : The first overall question had to do with the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem-more specifically, is androgyny or masculinity more importamt in explaining the variation in self-esteem? The second overall question had to do with the degree to which the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem is a universal or a culturally specific phenomeon-more specifically, is the relationship between sex-role identity and self-esteem the same in Korean and American cultures? The Bem Sex Role Inventory and the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory were administered to 208 American college students and 207 Korean college students, respectively, in introductory sociology classes. The BSRI and SEI are standardized for American subjects and written in English. Prior to administering these instruments to Korean subjects, they were translated ito the Korean Language. In order to fully explore the data, qualitative as well as quantitative measurement of the BSRI were used, and both factorial and regression analyses were performed in this study. The most important cross-cultural differences found in the present study are directly related to the two research questions. In the U.S. sample, masculine attributes were found to be more important in explaining self-esteem. On the other hand, androgynous attributes were positively related to self-esteem in the Korean sample. These findings also provide the answer to the second question. That is, different cross-cultural patterns of relationship were found between sexrole identity and self-esteem, providing some support for a culture-bound relationship. These cross-cultural differences were discussed in terms of both confucian values held by Koreans and Bakan's suggestion of a positive relationship between agentic characteristics and modernization.
