  • This paper develops a novel technique of face detection using brightness distribution in the surrounding area of eye. The proposed face detection consists of facial component candidate extraction, facial component candidate filtering through eye-lip combination, left/right eye classification using brightness distribution, face verification confirming edges in nose region. Because the proposed technique don't use any skin color, it can detect multiple faces in color images with complicated backgrounds and different illumination levels. The experimental results reveal that the proposed technique is better than the traditional techniques in terms of detection ratio.

  • Recently in the field of model checking, to overcome the state explosion problem, the method of using a SAT-solver is mainly researched. To use a SAT-solver, the system to be verified is translated into CNF and the Boolean cardinality constraint is widely used in translating the system into CNF. In BCC it is dealt with set of boolean variables, but there is no translating method of the sequence among Boolean variables. In this paper, we propose methods for translating the problem, which is extracting a subsequence with length k from a sequence of Boolean variables, into CNF formulas. Through experimental results, we show that our method is more efficient than using only BCC.

  • The dynamic characterization is important in making accurate predictions of the seismic response of the hybrid structures dominated by different damping mechanisms. Different damping characteristics arise from the construction of the tower with different materials: steel for the upper part; reinforced concrete for the lower main part and interaction with supporting soil. The process of modeling damping matrices and experimental verification is challenging because damping cannot be determined via static tests as can mass and stiffness. The assumption of classical damping is not appropriate if the system to be analyzed consists of two or more parts with significantly different levels of damping, such as steel/concrete mixed structure - supporting soil coupled system. The dynamic response of structures is critically determined by the damping mechanisms, and its value is very important for the design and analysis of vibrating structures. An analytical approach capable of evaluating the equivalent modal damping ratio from structural components is desirable for improving seismic design. Two approaches are considered to define and investigate dynamic characteristics of hybrid tower of cable-stayed bridges: The first approach makes use of a simplified approximation of two lumped masses to investigate the structure irregularity effects including damping of different material, mass ratio, frequency ratio on dynamic characteristics and modal damping; the second approach employs a detailed numerical step-by step integration procedure in which the damping matrices of the upper and the lower substructures are modeled with the Rayleigh damping formulation.

  • Spud-can is used for fixing jack-up rig on seabed. It needs to be inserted up to the required depth during the installation process to secure enough soil reaction and prevent overturning accidents. On the other hand, it should be extracted from seabed soils as fast as possible during the extraction process to minimize the corresponding operational cost. To achieve such goals, spud-can may be equipped with water-jetting system including monitoring and control. To develop such a smart spud-can, a reliable numerical simulation tool is essential and it has also to be validated against physical model tests. In this regard, authors developed a numerical simulation tool by using a commercial program ANSYS with extended Drucker-Prager (EDP) formula. Authors also conducted small-scale (1/100) physical model tests for verification and calibration purpose. By using the numerical model, a systematic parametric study is conducted both for sand and K(kaolin)-clay with varying important soil parameters and the best estimated soil properties of the physical test are deduced. Then, by using the selected soil properties, the numerical and experimental results for a sand/K-clay multi-layer case are cross-checked to show reasonably good agreement. The validated numerical model will be useful in the next-stage study which includes controllable water-jetting.

  • 5-axis NC machining has a good advantage of the accessibility of tool motion by adding two rotary axes. It offers numerous advantages such as expanding machining fields in parts of turbo machineries like impeller, propeller, turbine blade and rotor, reasonable tool employment and great reduction of the set-up process. However, as adding two rotary axes, it is difficult to choose suitable machining conditions in terms of cutter path and cutter posture at a cutter contact point. Therefore in this paper, it is proposed to decide suitable machining condition through an experimental method such as adopting various cutter paths, cutter postures types. Also, in order to increase the efficiency of 5-axis machining, it is necessary to minimize the cutter posture changes and create a continuous cutter path while avoiding interference. This study, by using an MC-space algorithm for interference avoidance and an MB-spline algorithm for continuous control, is intended to create a 5-axis machining cutter path with excellent surface quality and economic feasibility. finally, this study will verify the effectiveness of the suggested method through verification processing.

  • Currently, flat cover glasses are widely applied to mobile devices. However, for a good design and for convenience of use, curved cover glasses are in demand. Thus, many companies are attempting to produce curved cover glasses using a shaving technique, but the production efficiency is very low. Therefore, a molding technique has been adopted to increase the efficiency of curved glass production systems. For a glass molding system, a uniform temperature distribution of the mold is crucial to produce high-quality curved cover glasses. Before setting the heating conditions of the molding system for a uniform temperature distribution by a thermal analysis, verification is required. Therefore, in this study, temperature measurements were conducted for a prototype molding system and the experimental results were compared with simulation computations. The temperatures of the heating block surface were in good agreement with the computational results for transient and steady conditions.

  • This study tests the characteristics of heat radiation by applying the pin-height variables to 30-W LED floodlights. The angle of the heat sink enables us to identify the characteristics of the heat radiation based on the temperature distribution. The results of the study are as follows. When the heat sinks are set towards the ground, the heat transfer decreases in speed only to expands the temperature distribution, which adversely affects the characteristics of heat radiation and expands the temperature distribution of PCB with the LED chip. We verify that the characteristics of heat radiation are adversely affected when the height of the cooling pin decreases and the heat radiation area decreases, which impedes the heat transfer and increases the temperature distribution on the heat sink.

  • Electrical resistivity of a rock-sample is dependant on not only formation factor of rock itself but also many parameters such as fluid type, measuring device, temperature, water saturation, electrical contact between electrode and core section, induced polarization, and frequency of electric source. In this study, we attempt to verify various affecting factors in core resistivity measurements and to find a better environment for core resistivity measurement. Particularly great attention has been paid to understanding the effects of temperature, water saturation, contact condition between sample and electrodes, and frequency of electric source. Precise measurement of resistivity can be achieved by utilizing silver paste for better contacts, taping samples for constant moisture contents, and using time-series resistivity data.

  • This paper presents a dynamic workspace control method of underwater manipulator considering a floating ROV (Remotely Operated vehicle) motion caused by sea wave. This method is necessary for the underwater work required linear motion control of a manipulator's end-effector mounted on a floating ROV in undersea. In the proposed method, the motion of ROV is modeled as nonlinear first-order differential equation excluded dynamic elements. For online manipulator control achievement, we develop the position tracking method based on sensor data and EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) and the input velocity compensation method. The dynamic workspace control method is established by applying these methods to differential inverse kinematics solution. For verification of the proposed method, experimental data based test of ROV position tracking and simulation of the proposed control method are performed, which is based on the specification of the KORDI deep-sea ROV Hemire.
