The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.

Purpose: To reduce the noise and vibration of reinforced concrete slab structures, the damping performance is to be performed experimentally after installing hollow core or filling it with liquid. Method: Using the hollow rate as an experimental variable, the damping ratio and stiffness of each test specimen at impact load are obtained to determine the difference between the damping ratio and stiffness of the numerical analysis. In addition, the damping effects are reviewed by comparing the difference in the damping ratio and stiffness of a test specimen filled with liquid 50% of the study. Results: Since the difference in resistance between a specimen with or without hollow core is 5%, it is judged that there is no structural problem, and the injection of liquid into the hollow core can increase the damping ratio, which can reduce noise or vibration. Conclusion: At less than 20% of hollow rate, there was little damping effect, and at 30%, damping effect was found. However, if liquid is injected into the hollow core of the specimen, damping rate is shown to increase, and the injection of liquid into the hollow part is believed to reduce noise or vibration.

In this paper, we conducted experimental investigation on the field applicability through the verification of reinforcement effect of the steel pipe reinforcement grouting using high strength steel pipe. SGT275 (formerly known as STK400) steel pipe is generally applied to the traditional steel pipe reinforcement grouting method. However, the analysis of tunnel collapse cases applying the steel pipe reinforcement grouting shows that there are cases where the excessive bending and breakage of steel pipe occur. One of the reasons causing these collapses is the lack of steel pipe stiffness responding to the loosening load of tunnels caused by excavation. The strength of steel pipe has increased due to the recent development of high strength steel pipe (SGT550). However, since research on the reinforcement method considering strength increase is insufficient, there is a need for research on this. Therefore, in this study, we conducted experiments on the tensile and bending strength based on various conditions between high strength steel pipe, and carried out basic research on effective field application depending on the strength difference of steel pipe through the conventional design method. In particular, we verified the reinforcement effect of high strength steel pipe through the measurement results of deformed shape and stress of steel pipe arising from excavation after constructing high strength steel pipe and general steel pipe at actual sites. The research results show that high strength steel pipe has excellent bending strength and the reinforcement effect of reinforced grouting. Further, it is expected that high strength steel pipe will have an arching effect thanks to strength increase.

A combination of a metallic mesh and an adhesive layer of metallic particle/epoxy composite was introduced as an intermediate layer to enhance the adhesion between cold-sprayed particles and fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs). Aluminum was considered for both the metallic particles in the adhesive and the metallic mesh. To predict the mechanical characteristics of the intermediate bond layer under a high strain rate, the properties of the adhesive layer needed to be calculated or measured. Therefore, in this study, the Al particle/epoxy adhesive was homogenized by using a rule of mixture. To verify the homogenization, the penetration depth, and the thickness decrease after the cold spray deposition from the undeformed surface, was monitored with FE analysis and compared with experimental observation. The comparison displayed that the penetration depth was comparable to the diameters of one cold spray particle, and thus the homogenization approach can be reasonable for the prediction of the stress level of particulate polymer composite interlayer under a high strain rate for cold spray processing.

An experimental/analytic study has been conducted to understand the adverse effects of low vehicle speed, high axle load and high tire pressure on the performance of asphalt pavements. Of 33 asphalt sections at KHC test road, two sections having different base layer thickness (180 mm versus 280 mm) are adopted for rollover tests. During the test, a standard three-axle dump truck maintains a steady state condition as moving along the wheel path of a passing lane, and lateral offsets and real travel speed are measured with a laser-based wandering system. Test results suggest that vehicle speed affects both longitudinal and transverse strains at the bottom of asphalt layer (290 mm and 390 mm below the surface), and even slightly influences the measured vertical stresses at the top of subbase and subgrade due to the dynamic effect of rolling vehicle. Since the anisotropic nature of asphalt-aggregate mixtures, the difference between longitudinal and transverse strains appears prominent throughout the measurements. As the thickness of asphalt pavement increases, the measured lateral strains become larger than its corresponding longitudinal strains. Over the limited testing conditions, it is concluded that higher axle weight and higher tire pressures induce more strains and vertical stresses, leading to a premature deterioration of pavements. Finally, a layered elastic analysis overestimates the maximum strains measured under the 1st axle load, while underestimating the maximum vertical stress in both pavement sections.

For continuous I-girder bridges, a large negative bending moment is generated near pier region so that plastic hinge is first formed at this point. Then, the bending moment is redistributed when the I-girder has enough flexural ductility (or rotational capacity). However, for I-girder with high strength steel, it is known that the flexural ductility is considerably decreased by increasing the yield strength of material. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a study for guaranteeing proper flexural ductility of I-girder with high-strength steel. In this study, the evaluation of flexural ductility of negative moment region of I-girder with high strength steel where yield stress of steel is 680 MPa is presented based on the results of finite element analysis and experiment. From the results, it is found that the flexural ductility of the I-girder is significantly reduced due to the increase of elastic deformation and the decrease of plastic deformation ability of the material when the yield strength increases. In this study, the method to improve the flexural ductility of I-girder with high strength steel is proposed by an unequal installation of cross beam and an optimal position of cross beam is also suggested. Finally, the effects of the unequal installation of cross beam on the flexural ductility are discussed based on the experimental results.

Objective: The study was conducted to investigate the effect of correct occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAA) on intracardiac blood flow and thrombus formation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) using four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and three-dimensional (3D)-printed phantoms. Materials and Methods: Three life-sized 3D-printed left atrium (LA) phantoms, including a pre-occlusion (i.e., before the occlusion procedure) model and correctly and incorrectly occluded post-procedural models, were constructed based on cardiac computed tomography images from an 86-year-old male with long-standing persistent AF. A custom-made closed-loop flow circuit was set up, and pulsatile simulated pulmonary venous flow was delivered by a pump. 4D flow MRI was performed using a 3T scanner, and the images were analyzed using MATLAB-based software (R2020b; Mathworks). Flow metrics associated with blood stasis and thrombogenicity, such as the volume of stasis defined by the velocity threshold ($\left|\vec{V}\right|$ < 3 cm/s), surface-and-time-averaged wall shear stress (WSS), and endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP), were analyzed and compared among the three LA phantom models. Results: Different spatial distributions, orientations, and magnitudes of LA flow were directly visualized within the three LA phantoms using 4D flow MRI. The time-averaged volume and its ratio to the corresponding entire volume of LA flow stasis were consistently reduced in the correctly occluded model (70.82 mL and 39.0%, respectively), followed by the incorrectly occluded (73.17 mL and 39.0%, respectively) and pre-occlusion (79.11 mL and 39.7%, respectively) models. The surfaceand-time-averaged WSS and ECAP were also lowest in the correctly occluded model (0.048 Pa and 4.004 Pa-1, respectively), followed by the incorrectly occluded (0.059 Pa and 4.792 Pa-1, respectively) and pre-occlusion (0.072 Pa and 5.861 Pa-1, respectively) models. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a correctly occluded LAA leads to the greatest reduction in LA flow stasis and thrombogenicity, presenting a tentative procedural goal to maximize clinical benefits in patients with AF.

Objective : Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The treatment of PD aims to alleviate motor symptoms by replacing the reduced endogenous dopamine. Currently, there are no disease-modifying agents for the treatment of PD. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have emerged as an effective tool for new drug discovery and screening in the age of translational research. The neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is known to cause a similar loss of dopaminergic neurons in the human midbrain, with corresponding Parkinsonian symptoms. L-type calcium channels (LTCCs) have been implicated in the generation of mitochondrial oxidative stress, which underlies the pathogenesis of PD. Therefore, we investigated the neuro-restorative effect of LTCC inhibition in an MPTP-induced zebrafish PD model and suggested a possible drug candidate that might modify the progression of PD. Methods : All experiments were conducted using a line of transgenic zebrafish, Tg(dat:EGFP), in which green fluorescent protein (GFP) is expressed in dopaminergic neurons. The experimental groups were exposed to 500 μmol MPTP from 1 to 3 days post fertilization (dpf). The drug candidates : levodopa 1 mmol, nifedipine 10 μmol, nimodipine 3.5 μmol, diethylstilbestrol 0.3 μmol, luteolin 100 μmol, and calcitriol 0.25 μmol were exposed from 3 to 5 dpf. Locomotor activity was assessed by automated tracking and dopaminergic neurons were visualized in vivo by confocal microscopy. Results : Levodopa, nimodipine, diethylstilbestrol, and calcitriol had significant positive effects on the restoration of motor behavior, which was damaged by MPTP. Nimodipine and calcitriol have significant positive effects on the restoration of dopaminergic neurons, which were reduced by MPTP. Through locomotor analysis and dopaminergic neuron quantification, we identified the neuro-restorative effects of nimodipine and calcitriol in zebrafish MPTP-induced PD model. Conclusion : The present study identified the neuro-restorative effects of nimodipine and calcitriol in an MPTP-induced zebrafish model of PD. They restored dopaminergic neurons which were damaged due to the effects of MPTP and normalized the locomotor activity. LTCCs have potential pathological roles in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Zebrafish are highly amenable to high-throughput drug screening and might, therefore, be a useful tool to work towards the identification of disease-modifying treatment for PD. Further studies including zebrafish genetic models to elucidate the mechanism of action of the disease-modifying candidate by investigating Ca2+ influx and mitochondrial function in dopaminergic neurons, are needed to reveal the pathogenesis of PD and develop disease-modifying treatments for PD.

This study examined the frequency of a broiler's stay in each area as stock density using an ICT-based image analysis technique from the perspective of precision livestock farming (PLF) according to the increase in the domestic broiler farms to understand the normal behavior patterns of broilers by age. The broiler was used in the experimental box (3.3×2.7 m) in a poultry house in Gyeonggi province. The stock densities were 9.5 birds/㎡ (n=85) and 19 birds/㎡ (n=170), respectively, and the frequency of stay by feeding, water, and rest area was monitored using a top-view camera. The image data of three-colored-specific broilers identified as the stock density were acquired by age (12, 16, 22, 27, and 29 days) for six hours. In the collected image data, the object tracking technique was used to record the cumulative movement path by connecting approximately 640,000 frames at 30 fps to quantify the frequency of stay in each area. In each stock density, it was significant in the order of the rest area, feeding, and water area (p<0.001). In 9.5 birds/㎡, it was at 57.9, 24.2, and 17.9 %, and 73.2, 16.8, and 10 % in 19 birds/㎡. The frequency of a broiler's stay could be evaluated in each area as the stock density using an ICT-based image analysis technique that minimizes stress. This method is expected to be used to provide basic material for developing an ICT-based management system through real-time monitoring.

Objective: To investigate whether semen parameters in infertile couples who undergone intrauterine insemination (IUI) change in the subsequent IUI cycle and the subsequent in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. Methods: Fifty-three infertile couples who had failed to become pregnant after the first IUI cycle with computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) were included. After the first IUI, thirty-eight couples underwent the second IUI (Group 1), and fifteen underwent IVF-ET procedure (Group 2). All semen parameters including semen volume, concentration, motility and total motile sperm count were analyzed in the second IUI or IVF-ET procedure for comparison with the result of first IUI. Results: There were no significant differences in husband age, interval between the first and second procedure and cause of infertility. In Group 1, only sperm motility at the time of the latter IUI was significantly decreased when compared to the former IUI irrespective of the first semen parameters. In Group 2, sperm concentration, motility and total motile sperm count at the time of subsequent IVF were lower than the former IUI. By sub-analyses of Group 2, in the group of optimal semen parameter at IUI cycle, sperm concentration and total motile sperm count at the time of subsequent IVF were lower than the former IUI, while in the group of suboptimal semen parameter at IUI cycle, only sperm motility at the time of subsequent IVF were lower than the former IUI. Conclusion: The semen parameters in couples converted to IVF cycle were more adversely affected than those remained in IUI cycle. Further study on psychological stress should be necessary to explain the reason.
