  • Recently, due to the increase in high-rise apartment and residential-commercial complex buildings, a number of mega-class mass concrete members with a thickness of 3m or more have been designed. As the construction of mass concrete such as transfer beam and slab is increasing not only in foundation members but also in special structures, research on reducing temperature cracks in mass concrete is being conducted. To review temperature cracks in mass concrete, it is important to review the thermal properties of concrete, but it is difficult to use an adiabatic temperature rise tester in the field, so the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test is mainly used. In this study, to improve the accuracy of the results of concrete heat characteristics gained by the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, various factors affecting heat loss compensation and methods were reviewed and presented.

A compensation method for the scaling effects in the simulation of a downburst-generated wind-wave field

  • Before performing an experimental study on the downburst-generated wave, it is necessary to examine the scale effects and corresponding corrections or compensations. Analysis of similarity is conducted to conclude the non-dimensional force ratios that account for the dynamic similarity in the interaction of downburst with wave between the prototype and the scale model, along with the corresponding scale factors. The fractional volume of fluid (VOF) method in association with the impinging jet model is employed to explore the characteristics of the downburst-generated wave numerically, and the validity of the proposed scaling method is verified. The study shows that the location of the maximum radial wind velocity in a downburst-wave field is a little higher than that identified in a downburst over the land, which might be attributed to the presence of the wave which changes the roughness of the underlying surface of the downburst. The impinging airflow would generate a concavity in the free surface of the water around the stagnation point of the downburst, with a diameter of about two times the jet diameter (Djet). The maximum wave height appears at the location of 1.5Djet from the stagnation point. Reynolds number has an insignificant influence on the scale effects, in accordance with the numerical investigation of the 30 scale models with the Reynolds number varying from 3.85 × 104 to 7.30 × 109. The ratio of the inertial force of air to the gravitational force of water, which is denoted by G, is found to be the most significant factor that would affect the interaction of downburst with wave. For the correction or compensation of the scale effects, fitting curves for the measures of the downburst-wave field (e.g., wind profile, significant wave height), along with the corresponding equations, are presented as a function of the parameter G.

  • In this study, we researched control compensation techniques to enhance control robustness against external forces and responsiveness to output dead zones in direct-actuated voice coil actuators for small guided missiles. An aircraft's wings must optimally control the command angle while managing various nonlinear external forces such as drag, lift, and thrust during flight. The small direct -drive voice coil actuator, when applied, benefits from small current requirements in no-load situations but suffers from diminished control robustness due to rapid increases in control current during external force applications. To address this issue, we designed and implemented a system that compensates for errors by accumulating additional output, thus improving the actuator's responsiveness in control scenarios with external forces. This was verified through experimental results.

  • This paper describes a step-down AC voltage regulator using an AC chopper and auxiliary transformer, which is a series connected to the main input. The detail design of the AC regulator, logic and PWM pattern of the AC chopper is described and the three-phase AC regulator using two single­phase AC choppers with a three transformer configuration is proposed for three-phase application. The proposed three-phase system has the advantages of lower system cost due to reduced switch number and gate driver circuit as well as advantages of decreased size and weight because it uses a series compensated scheme. The proposed AC regulator has many benefits such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and simple control logic. Experimental results indicate that it can be used as a step-down AC voltage regulator for power saving purposes very efficiently.

  • An application specific processor for an H.264 decoder with a configurable embedded processor is designed in this research. The motion compensation, inverse integer transform, inverse quantization, and entropy decoding algorithm of H.264 decoder software are optimized. We improved the performance of the processor with instruction-level hardware optimization, which is tailored to configurable embedded processor architecture. The optimized instructions for video processing can be used in other video compression standards such as MPEG 1, 2, and 4. A significant performance improvement is achieved with high flexibility. Experimental results show that we could achieve 300% performance for the H.264 baseline profile level 2 decoder.

  • This paper describes development of hardware simulator for the PMSG wind power system, which was designed considering wind characteristic, blade characteristic and blade inertia compensation. The simulator consists of three major parts, such as wind turbine model using induction motor, PMSG generator, converter-inverter set. and control system. The turbine simulator generates torque and speed signals for a specific wind turbine with respect to given wind speed. This torque and speed signals are scaled down to fit the input of 2kW PMSG. The PMSG-side converter operates to track the maximum power point, and the grid-side inverter controls the active and reactive power supplied to the grid. The operational feasibility was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC, and the implementation feasibility was confirmed through experimental works with a hardware set-up.

  • Maximum efficiency control scheme in a stator flux-oriented induction motor drive is proposed for minimizing input dc power. Flux level is decreased in steps for searching the minimum input dc power. In addition, Torque equation, slip angular frequency, and decoupling compensation current considering iron loss resistance is used. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Fast Compensator of Periodic Disturbance in Disk Drives (디스크 드라이브의 주기적 외란 고속 보상 제어)

  • The control objective in hard disk drives is to move head as fast as possible to target track and position the head over the center of target track in the presence of external disturbances. The external shock or disk clamping error in manufacturing process causes the disk center to deviate from the disk rotation center. The disk shift acts on the control system as disturbance and degrades severely the performance of disk drives. In this paper, we present a new controller that compensates for the periodic disturbances very fast. The disturbance compensator is arranged in parallel with the state feedback controller. To avoid the interference with the state feedback controller, the compensator creates compensation signal without the feedback of system output until steady state. The pulse type controller is included additionally for improving the transient performance due to initial state. Finally, in order to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed compensator. we present some experimental results using a commercially available disk drive.

  • Improving the recognition performance of connected digit telephone speech still remains a problem to be solved. As a basic study for it, this paper analyzes the variation of feature parameters of Korean digit telephone speech according to channel distortion. As a feature parameter for analysis and recognition MFCC is used. To analyze the effect of telephone channel distortion depending on each call, MFCCs are first obtained from the connected digit telephone speech for each phoneme included in the Korean digit. Then CMN, RTCN, and RASTA are applied to the MFCC as channel compensation techniques. Using the feature parameters of MFCC, MFCC+CMN, MFCC+RTCN, and MFCC+RASTA, variances of phonemes are analyzed and recognition experiments are done for each case. Experimental results are discussed with our findings and discussions

  • This paper presents experimental results of the attitude control for a two-rotor system with 3-DOF(degree-of-freedom). Two DC motors are equipped at the two ends of a rectangular beam to generate lift force and the relation between motor voltage and lift force is found experimentally. And inertial sensors are mounted at the center of the beam to measure the roll angle and a complementary filter is designed to get the angle during DC motors driving. A controller with nonlinear compensation, integrator and state feedback to achieve asymptotic tracking for a step input and reject input disturbance is designed and experimented.
