Long-Range Sound Transmission Characteristics in Shallow-Water Channel with Thermocline (수온약층이 존재하는 천해역 수중음향 채널의 장거리 신호 전달 특성)

  • This paper analyzes the effect of a thermocline on the long-range acoustic signal propagation using the experimental data acquired in the shallow water near Jeju island. Temperature and salinity measurement data in Korea Oceanographic Data Center (KODC) show that the seasonal thermocline exists near Jeju island, and, under the thermocline, the bottom loss property strongly affects the long-range propagation of acoustic signal along the down-ward refractive paths. We estimate the bottom loss under the thermocline using experiment data obtained near Jeju island in May, 2013. The result shows that the estimated bottom losses are below 3 dB and the higher level signal is received at the deeper receiver depths. This shows that the acoustic trapping under the thermocline can be a viable long-range signal transmission channel in the shallow water with a thermocline.

Collective Oscillations of a Bubble Cloud as a Source of Underwater Ambient Noise in the Ocean (해양에서의 수중소음원으로서 기포군의 집단운동)

  • it is well observed in the ocean that the surface disturbances due to rain, wind and breaking waves generate bubble clouds several meters deep from the water surfaces. Thses kinds of bubble clouds can work as a physical mechanism to produce underwater ambient noise. In the laboratory experiment observing the noise generated from a bubble cloud we showed a role of individual bubbles in collective oscillations of a bubble cloud. The experimental data agree very well with the theoretical predictions. These results confirm that the collective oscillations of a bubble cloud is one of the more likely mechanisms for an ocean ambient noise source around several hundred hertz.

Experimental Results of an Underwater Acoustic Communications Using BFSK Modulation (BFSK 변조를 이용한 수중 음향 통신의 실험적 고찰)

  • In this paper we analyzed the performance of data transmission using BFSK modulation. The system performances were evaluated by the experiments in water tank. As a result we showed the influences of reverberation due to the multipath. In order to simplify the experiment procedure the channel coding etc. were omitted. The experimental result shows that the maximum transmission data rate in used water tank is about 800 bps. We also verified that the reverberation effect m reduced using a deconvolution with a measured channel impulse response. This method improved the bit rate by about 100 bps than simple noncoherent demodulator at bit error rate of 10/sup -3/.

  • Detection and classification of underwater targets is an important issue for both military and non-military purposes. Recently, many performance improvements are being reported in the field of pattern recognition with the development of deep learning technology. Among the results, DBN showed good performance when used for pre-training of DNN. In this paper, DBN was used for the classification of underwater targets using active sonar, and the results are compared with that of the conventional BPNN. We synthesized active sonar target signals using 3-dimensional highlight model. Then, features were extracted based on FrFT. In the single aspect based experiment, the classification result using DBN was improved about 3.83% compared with the BPNN. In the case of multi-aspect based experiment, a performance of 95% or more is obtained when the number of observation sequence exceeds three.

  • The breaking wave pressure occurs when a plunging breaker instantaneously impinges on structural surface, and appears differently depending on whether or not to form air pockets at the instant of contact. The Wagner type normally forms a single pressure peak at the contact spot due to the direct collision of water volume to the structure whereas in the Bagnold type the time lagged oscillation of the air pocket causes pressure peaks even at areas away from the spot. In the present study, the Bagnold's impact pressure is numerically and experimentally investigated for the bulkhead of an underwater tunnel under construction which is subjected to nearby breaking waves. A numerical solver of Navier-Stokes equations was applied to reproduce the breaking waves near a bulkhead, and the results showed the Bagnold's impact pressure occurring on the back (land side) face of the bulkhead. The existence of the impact pressure was also verified by a hydraulic model testing, and it was found that the experimental results well conformed to their numerical counterparts.

  • The analysis of ocean environment offers us essential information for ocean exploration. But ocean environment has a lot of environmental variables such as the movements of nodes by an ocean current, corrosion by salt water, attenuation of radio wave, occurrences of multi-path and difficulty of sensor nodes' deployment. It is accordingly difficult and complex to gather and process the environmental information through ocean data communication due to these constraints of ocean environment unlike the terrestrial wireless networks. To overcome these problems, we organized ocean communication network for monitoring underwater environment by real experiment in Gyeongpoho similar to ocean environment. Therefore, this paper aims at overcoming major obstacles in ocean environment, effectively deploying sensor nodes for ocean environment monitoring and defining an efficient structure suitable for communication environment by the implementation of ocean environment monitoring system in Gyeongpoho.

  • When a active sonar signal is transmitted and returned back from a target, it has been distorted by various properties of acoustic channel such as multipath arrivals. And signals have been appeared to be different form by target position and attitude. Therefore, we simulated the target echo signal using 3 dimensional target model include reflects target features. In this paper, we develop components form of a simulated target model is made up equally spaced highlight points, and each part of the target consists of shape function. We can simulate a target echo signal and Target strength (TS) according to wave incident angle. To verify, we made small scale target in kit form and we had got underwater target signal for comparing simulation result in water tank.

A Response of the Shoal of Chub Mackerel ( Scomber Japonics , HOVTTYUN ) to Underwater Sound (수중음에 대한 고등어 어군의 반응)

  • A field experiment was carried out of confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish school of chub mackerel in the coast of Idousyo Island. Underwater sound that was made use of luring of fish school was pure sound and interval pure sound which the frequencies of the sound were 150Hz and 200Hz, respectively. The results of the observation of hooking and recording paper of fish finder indicate that the effect of emitting sound at 20m in the depth of water was remarkable for the luring of fish school of chub mackerel. The vertical pure sound pressure level at 150Hz and 200Hz of the water layer that was lured the fish school of chub mackerel were 140.1dB and 146.dB at 30m, 121.0dB and 126.6dB at 70m and 141.9dB and 120.5dB at 120m in the depth of water, respectively.

A study on weighting algorithm of multi-band transmission method using an estimated BER (추정 BER을 이용한 다중 밴드 전송 기법의 가중치 알고리즘 연구)

  • In underwater communications, to compensate performance degradation induced from rapidly changing channel transfer characteristic, multi-band communication method which allocate the same data to different frequency bands is used. However, the multi-band configuration may have worse performance than the single-band one because performance degradation in a particular band affects the output from the entire bands. This problem can be solved through a receiving end that analyzes error rates of each band, sets threshold values and allocates lower weights to inferior bands. Therefore, this paper proposed a weighting algorithm based on estimated Bit Error Rate (BER) which analyzes reliability of received data based on the performance difference between demodulated and decoded data. Employing turbo codes with coding rate of 1/3, we evaluate the performance of the proposed weighted multi-band transmission model in real underwater environments based on optimal simulation parameters. Through the sea trial experiment, we confirmed error performance was improved by applying the proposed weighting algorithm.

  • In the past few years, there are many studies and researches of the underwater vehicles which are carried out its mission using sonar sensors. MSCL(Marine System Control Lab.) at Inha University developed test-bed small ROV, ISRO. ISRO is an open-frame type and has 4 thrusters. ISRO can control 4 motions i.e surge, sway, yaw and heave with sonar sensors. ISRO is developed for inspection of ship hull, marine structure, plant of lake or river and so on. When ROV ISRO inspects something, it is necessary to control the position of ROV ISRO's for the movement and anti-collision with structures in the underwater. In this paper, we deal with the development of a small ROV and verification of the position control system via simulation and experiment using sonar sensors.
