This research is comprised of virtually simulating behavior while experiencing low gravity effects in advance of real world testing in low gravity aboard Zero Gravity Corporation's (Zero-G) research aircraft (727-200F). The experiment simulated a drill rig penetrating a regolith simulant. Regolith is a layer of loose, heterogeneous superficial deposits covering solid rock on surfaces of the Earth' moon, asteroids and Mars. The behavior and propagation of space debris when drilled in low gravity was tested through simulations and visualization in a leading dynamic simulation software as well as discrete element modeling software and in preparation for comparing to real world results from flying the experiment aboard Zero-G. The study of outer space regolith could lead to deeper scientific knowledge of extra-terrestrial surfaces, which could lead us to breakthroughs with respect to space mining or in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These studies aimed to test and evaluate the drilling process in low to zero gravity environments and to determine static stress analysis on the drill when tested in low gravity environments. These tests and simulations were conducted by a team from Texas A&M University's Department of Construction Science, the United States Air Force Academy's Department of Astronautical Engineering, and Crow Industries
When a deployed probe is biased by a high positive potential during a space experiment, the payload is induced to a negative voltage in order to balance the total current in the whole system. The return currents are due to the responding ions and secondary electrons on the payload surface. In order to understand the current collection mechanism, the process was simulated with a combination of resistor, inductor, and capacitor in SPICE program which was equivalent to the background plasma sheath. The simulation results were compared with experimental results from SPEAR-3 (Space Power Experiment Aboard Rocket-3). The return current curve in the simulation was compatible to the experimental result, and the simulation helped to predict the transient plasma response to a high voltage during the plasma sheath formation.
We describe the space project of Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO), which will observe early optical photons from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with a sub-second optical response, for the first time. The UFFO will probe the early optical rise of GRBs, opening a completely new frontier in GRB and transient studies, using a fast-response rotatable mirror system which redirects opitical path to telescope instead of slewing of telescopes or spacecraft. In our small UFFO-Pathfinder experiment, scheduled to launch aboard the Lomonosov satellite in June 2012, we use a motorized mirror in our Slewing Mirror Telescope instrument to achieve less than one second optical response after X-ray trigger. We describe the science and the mission of the UFFO project, including a serious version called UFFO-100 which will be launched in 2014. With our program of ultra-fast optical response GRB observatories, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of GRB mechanisms, and potentially open up the z>10 universe to study via GRB as point source emission probes.
Pre-launch calibration data have been analyzed for evaluating the point spread function (PSF) of Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT). Especially, it is found crucial that the effect of undersampling should be treated properly. The best fit solution of the SXT PSF, which is modeled by an elliptical Moffat function, has been derived by the comparison with the ground experiment data. In order to examine the off-axis variation of the SXT PSF, we need to define in advance the location of the optical axis on the CCD. According to the previous studies, the off-axis variation of effective area (the vignetting function) may be approximated either by two non-concentric cones or by a cone with some flat distortions. There have been, however, no fully approved representations for the SXT vignetting effect. The effect of the shift of the optical axis from the geometrical center of the telescope is investigated by numerical simulation. It is revealed from our study that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the SXT PSF stays nearly constant within an error bound over the central area of the CCD where the solar disk is located.
Two different sensors (here, KOMPSAT and RADARSAT) are considered for ship detection, and are used to delineate the detection performance for their data. The experiments are set for coastal regions of Mokpo Port and Ulsan Port and field experiments on board pilot boat are conducted to collect in situ ship validation information such as ship type and length. This paper introduce mainly the experiment result of ship detection by both RADARSAT SAR imagery and landbased RADAR data, operated by the local Authority of South Korea, so called vessel traffic system (VTS) radar. Fine imagery of Ulsan Port was acquired on June 19, 2004 and in-situ data such as wind speed and direction, taking pictures of ships and natural features were obtained aboard a pilot ship. North winds, with a maximum speed of 3.1 m/s were recorded. Ship's position, size and shape and natural features of breakwaters, oil pipeline and alongside ship were compared using SAR and VTS. It is shown that KOMPSAT/EOC has a good performance in the detection of a moving ship at a speed of 7 kts or more an hour that ship and its wake can be imaged. The detection capability of RADARSAT doesn't matter how fast ship is running and depends on a ship itself, e.g. its material, length and type. Our results indicate that SAR can be applicable to automated ship detection for a VTS and SAR combination service.

In order to investigate the abundance and transboundary fluxes of air pollutants over the Yellow Sea, airborne measurements were made aboard the SF-600 aircraft (Pan-Asia Engineering) in March, 1996. The data presented in this paper are preliminary results and airborne experiment will be carried out until 1999. The vertical profile of relevant meteorological parameters such as temperature, water vapor, wind direction and wind speed were also observed at Taean. Mixing layer height was about 1000~1100m during the flights. The SO$_2$ and NO$_{x}$ concentrations were 3~6 ppb and 5~7 ppb below 1000 m, within 1 ppb and 3~5 ppb at 1000~2000m, respectively. Backward trajectory analyses were also carried out. A mathematical method by Lelieveld et al.(1989) was used to estimate the flux of air pollutants through the planetary boundary layer of Yellow Sea area. Transboundary fluxes were calculated using the measurement results with respect to the pollutants concentration, depth of the planetary boundary layer, wind speed and wind direction. The estimated transboundary flux of SO$_2$through the western boundary of Korea was about 39~42 tons/hour.r.
Although many researches related to monitoring and automatic measuring devices for early warning system during slope failure have been carried out in Korea and aboard, most of the researches have installed measuring devices on the slope surface, and there are only few researches about warning systems that can detect and warn before slope failure and disaster occurs. In this study, slope failure simulation experiment was performed by attaching sensors to rock bolts, and initial slope behavior characteristics during slope failure were analyzed. Also, the experiment results were compared and reviewed with varied slope conditions, i.e. shotcrete slope and natural slope, and varied material conditions, i.e. GFRP and steel rock bolt. This study can be used as a basic data in development of warning and alarm system for early evacuation through early detection and warning before slope failure occurs in steep slopes and slope failure vulnerable areas.

An x-ray astronomy experiment consisting of three collimated proportional counters and an X-ray Sky Monitor (XSM) was flown aboard the Indian Satellite IRS-P3 launched on March 21, 1996 from SHAR range in India. The Satellite is in a circular orbit of 830 km altitude with an orbital inclination of $98^{\circ}$ and has three axis stabilized pointing capability. Each pointed-mode Proportional Counter (PPC) is a multilayer, multianode unit filled with P-10 gas ($90\%$ Ar + $10\%\;CH_4$) at 800 torr and having an aluminized mylar window of 25 micron thickness. The three PPCs are identical and have a field of view of $2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$ defined by silver coated aluminium honeycomb collimators. The total effective area of the three PPCs is about 1200 $cm^2$. The PPCs are sensitive in 2-20 keV band. The XSM consists of a pin-hole of 1 $cm^2$ area placed 16 cm above the anode plane of a 32 cm$\times$32 cm position sensitive proportional counter sensitive in 3-8 keV interval. The position of the x-ray events is determined by charge division technique using nichrome wires as anodes. The principal objective of this experiment is to carry out timing studies of x-ray pulsars, x-ray binaries and other rapidly varying x-ray sources. The XSM will be used to detect transient x-ray sources and monitor intensity of bright x-ray binaries. Observations of black-hole binary Cyg X-1 and few other binary sources were carried out in early May and July-August 1996 period. Details of the x-ray detector characteristics are presented and preliminary results from the observations are discussed.
The author carried out an experiment to determine the resistance of trawl net aboard M/S Saebada, training ship of National Fisheries University of Pusan, 2,275 G/T and 3,600ps. Total tension loaded on warp were measured by the recording tension meter. Resistance of the net is estimated by subtracting the resistance of otter boards and warps from the total tension. Coefficient k and exponent n of the formula on the trawl net deduced by Koyama, $R_N=k\frac{d}{l}abv^n$ were calculated from the resistance of the net obtained. The results obtained are can be summarized as follows : 1. Six seamed net with two net pendant k=11, n=1.8 2. Eight seamed net with three net pendant k=11, n=1.8 3. Ten seamed net with three net pendant k=9, n=1.9 4. Ten seamed net with four net pendant k=9, n=1.9

Towing performance of a midwater trawl system was examined aboard the training ship KAYA(2900ps) at the East Sea using the midwater trawl gear that had been designed and manufactured in accordance with the vessel. In this experiment, the trawl system data, the towing speed, the length and tension of the warp, net mouth height, and the depth of otter boards and net were measured and analyzed. The results are as follows: 1. In case of heaving in the warp with constant towing speed, the tension was suddenly increased and then again was reduced and after returned to the original steady state tension. At this time, net height was reduced a bit by ascension of ground rope, but returned to it’s original value. In the case where the warp was paid out, the tension was suddenly decreased and after increased and then returned to the tension of the original state, and the net height was greatly increased instantly by the sinking of the ground rope and then returned to the steady state 2. In the case of increased towing speed mm constant warp length, the tension was increased, and reducing the net height, the gear depth was decreased. On the other hand, in the case where towing speed was reduced, the tension was reduced and the gear depth and net height was increased. 3. Otter boards show a swing motion in the scope of 5~ 10m continuously. Otter boards responded to the state change of the trawl system at first, and then the motion of the net appeared. 4. The depth of net center was about 20m deeper than that of the otter boards, it shows about 0.4 times the warp length at the 4knots towing speed.
