It is much expected that steel bridges, which have been damaged by increase of vehicle load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. In this paper, the stress generated by repair welding under loading are analyzed by three dimensional elasto-plastic analyses. The longer and deeper repair weld line bocemes, the larger the magnitude of transient stress becomes. The magnitude of transient stress generated by repair welding under loading $({\sigma}_y/3,\;{\sigma}_a)$ is similar to summation of stresses generated by repair welding and loading. The longer repair weld line ratio(1/b) becomes, the larger the magnitude of transient stress generated by repair welding under loading bocomes. And, the longer repair weld line ratio(1/b) becomes, the larger the magnitude of in-plane displacement generated by repair welding under loading$({\sigma}_y/3,\;{\sigma}_a)$.
In this study, heading characteristics and heading control performances were evaluated to achieve the wave shield effect. The wave shield effect originating from heading control reduces the relative motions of moored vessels in a floating liquefied natural gas bunkering terminal (FLBT). Therefore, loading and off-loading performances are improved through reduced relative motion. For the objective of this study and efficiency of the analysis, a simplified model was used that assuming no relative motion of the moored vessels in the FLBT. The simplified model involved modeling the environmental loads and inertia of several floating bodies, including FLBT, into the environmental loads and inertia of a single vessel. The simplified model was validated through comparisons with model tests. With the simplified model, heading characteristics and heading control simulations were performed using low-frequency planar motion equations. The heading characteristics and heading control performances of FLBT were analyzed through the results of simulations under the expected environmental conditions. The capacity of the tunnel thrust for the heading control performance was confirmed to be adequate for improvement of the loading and off-loading performances using the wave shielding effects under the operation conditions.

Fatigue cracking occurs over long time period because dynamic strength of slab continuously decreases by vehicle loading repetitively applied to the concrete pavement. To more accurately predict the fatigue life of the concrete pavement, the stress due to environmental loading should be considered prior to calculating the stress due to the vehicle loading because the stress due to temperature and moisture distribution always exists within the slab. Accordingly, a new fatigue model considering the environmental loading was developed in this research by evaluating factors of existing fatigue models most widely used and by making data points from the models. The applicability of the new model was evaluated by performing a fatigue analysis on the general concrete pavement structure using local climatic and traffic conditions in Korea. It was concluded that the top-down cracking due to the tensile stress at top of the slab is dominant cause of the fatigue failure than the bottom-up cracking occurred at bottom of the slab. More advanced fatigue analysis considering vehicle speed is expected by developing this study.
Not all loads contribute to fatigue crack propagation in the welded detail of steel bridges when they are subjected to variable amplitude loading. For fatigue assessment, therefore, non-contributing stress cycles should be truncated. However, stress range truncation is not considered during typical fatigue reliability assessment. When applying the first order reliability method, stress range truncation occurs mismatch between the expected number of cycles to failure and the number of cycles obtained at the time of evaluation, because the expected number of cycles only counts the stress cycles that contribute to fatigue crack growth. Herein, we introduce a calibration factor to coordinate the expected number of cycles to failure to the equivalent value which includes both contributing and non-contributing stress cycles. The effectiveness of stress range truncation and the proposed calibration factor was validated via case studies.

In this study, the drift current characteristics of charged particles are analyzed for panels fabricated by varying the waveform biasing of the active particle loading method (APLM), which is a method driven by the electrophoretic principle of loading charged particles into a cell of a barrier rib-type electronic paper. We prepare 3 panels using APLM and 1 panel without APLM. The waveform of APLM uses square wave and ramp wave, and the step voltage wave is applied to the driving voltage. The drift currents measured from the square wave and ramp wave with the same period applied by APLM are 4.872 µC and 5.464 µC, respectively, and the ramp wave is shown to be relatively advantageous for loading charged particles that have a large q/m. The time-current curve results confirm that the abrupt movement of charged particles is occurring. When the step form wave signal with a short time of 1s is first applied, initial large movement of the charged particles is confirmed to occur in all samples, which is understood as the effect of applying the voltage necessary to remove the imaging force. The results of this study are expected to improve the loading of charged particles into the electronic paper cell, driven by the electrophoretic principle and optimization of the driving conditions.
Gravitational SPLITT fractionation (GSF) provides separation of colloidal particles into two subpopulations in a preparative scale. Conventionally, GSF is carried out in a thin rectangular channel having two inlets and two outlets at the top and bottom of the channel, respectively. And the channel is equipped with two flow-splitters, one between the top and bottom inlets and another between the top and bottom outlets. A large scale splitter-less GSF system had been developed, which was designed to operate in the full feed depletion (FFD) mode. In the FFD mode, there is only one inlet through which the sample is fed, thus preventing the sample dilution. In this study, the effect of the sample-loading (in the unit of g/hr) on the fractionation efficiency (FE, number% of particles in a GSF fraction that have the sizes expected by theory) of the new large scale splitter-less FFD-GSF system was investigated. The system was tested in the sample-loading range of 3.0-12.0 g/hr with polyurethane latex beads (PU) and sea-sediment. It was found that there is an optimum range in the sample-loading for a FFD-GSF separation. It was also found that there is a general tendency of FE decreasing as the concentration of the sample suspension increases.

In the unsaturated soil, suction, the negative pore water pressure leads to increases of the yield stress and the plastic shear stiffness of the soil skeleton due to the growth in interparticle stress. Therefore, in this study, the stress-strain relationship based on cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model extended for unsaturated soil considering the 1st and the 2nd yield functions was induced in order to account for these effects of suction under the dynamic loading condition such as the earthquake. Through the program code considering this relationship and the routine of the cyclic loading with the reversion of loading direction, the numerical simulation of the cyclic triaxial test under the unsaturated condition would be possible. It is expected that the results of this study possibly contribute to the accuracy improvement on the prediction of unsaturated soil behavior under the dynamic loading condition.
Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was conducted for mortar specimens under three types of static loading patterns (cubic-splitting, direct-shear and pull-out). Each of the applied loading patterns was expected to produce a particular fracture process. Subsequently, the AEs generated by various fracture or damage processes carried specific information on temporal micro-crack behaviors of concrete for post analysis, which was represented in the form of detected AE signal characteristics. Among various available characteristics of acquired AE signals, frequency content was of great interest. In this study, cement-based piezoelectric sensor (as AE transducer) and home-programmed DEcLIN monitoring system were utilized for AE monitoring on mortar. The cement-based piezoelectric sensor demonstrated enhanced sensitivity and broad frequency domain response range after being embedded into mortar specimens. This broad band characteristic of cement-based piezoelectric sensor in frequency domain response benefited the analysis of frequency content of AE. Various evaluation methods were introduced and employed to clarify the variation characteristics of AE frequency content in each test. It was found that the variation behaviors of AE frequency content exhibited a close relationship with the applied loading processes during the tests.

This paper presents the feature profile evolution silicon deep trench etching, which is very crucial for the commercial wafer process application. The silicon deep trenches were etched with the SF6 gas & Hbr gas based process recipe. The optimized silicon deep trench process resulted in vertical profiles (87o~90o) with loading effect of < 1%. The process recipes were developed for the silicon deep trench etching applications. This scheme provides vertically profiles without notching of top corner was observed. In this study, the production of SF6 gas based silicon deep trench etch process much more strongly than expected on the basis of Hbr gas trench process that have been investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on the test results, it is concluded that the silicon deep trench etching shows the sufficient profile for practical MOS FET silicon deep trench technology process.

This study was performed to compare the stress distribution pattern in the crestal cortical bone and cancellous bone using 3-dimensional finite element stress analysis when 2 different Young's modulus(high modulus, model 1; low modulus, model 2) of cancellous bone was assumed. For the analysis, a finite element model was designed to have two square-threaded implants fused together and located at first and second molar area. Stress distribution was observed when vertical load of 200N was applied at several points on the occlusal surfaces of the implants, including central fossa, points 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm and 3.5mm buccally away from central fossa. The results were as follows; 1. In both model, the maximum Von-Mises stress in the crestal cortical bone was greater when the load was applied at the central point, points 1.5mm and 2mm buccally away from central fossa than other cases. 2. In the cortical bone around first and second molar, model 2 showed greater Von-Mises stress than model 1. It is concluded that when the occlusal contact is afforded, the distribution of stress varies depending on the density of cancellous bone and the location of loading. More favorable stress distribution is expected when the contact load is applied within the diameter of fixtures.
