  • As the life cycle of buildings is expected to increase, new constructions will decrease and the proportion of remodeling and repair will increase. Therefore, there is an increasing need for overall performance management of old buildings. In 2020, the proportion of buildings over 30 years old is expected to reach a half. As a result, the demand for securing and improving the performance in the stage of using the building is increasing due to the change in the demand for the building, such as the decrease in the construction permit and the increase in the use of the existing building. From this perspective, the study sought to consider institutional measures to organize the preventive and conservative maintenance of buildings. For this purpose, the conceptual goals of inspection for building maintenance were set through a literature review, and the status and problems associated with building maintenance were analyzed to suggest ways to improve the inspection system for building maintenance.

  • The vitellin of the fireflies, Luciola unmunsana and L. lateralis was characterized. The vitellin of L. unmunfon is composed of two subunits, designated Vnl (195 kDa) and Vn2 (185 kDa) in SDS-polyacryamide gel electrophoresis. These two subunits of vitellin of L. unmunsana gradually decreased during embryogenesis. As expected, these protein bands were presented in female adult hemolymph and egg extracts, but not in male. The vitellin of L. lateralis is also composed of two subunits, designated Vnl (195 kDa) and Vn2 (180 kDa) in SDS-PAGEi and these two protein bands gradually decreased during embryogenesis. Western blot analysis using each of polyclonal antiserum against vitellins of L. unmunsana and L. lateralis showed that two antisera strongly crossereacted with vitellin subunits of L. unmunsana and L. lateralis, suggesting that vitellins of L. unmunsana and L. lateralis have similarity with each other.

  • This study was designed to establish the stability of EGHB010, a combined hot water extract of Paeoniae Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix. Test of coliform groups, sensory evaluations, contents of moisture, and the amount of paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin were determined during storage at 4, 25 and 35℃ for 6 months. Coliform groups were not observed and moisture contents were maintained about 3.0% during the storage period. Sensory characteristics including color, taste, texture and appearance were tested over 3 points throughout the entire storage period. It maintained the commercial value during the storage period. Contents of paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin as indicator components were remained stably for the storage period. The shelf-life of EGHB010 based on a linear response to zero of sensory evaluation with the highest correlation coefficient was predicted. Finally, the shelf-life of EGHB010 was expected for about 3 years to consider in safety coefficient. The shelf-life data of EGHB010 can be used to develop a functional health ingredient.

  • The survey was conducted by using questionnaires in order to investigate the expectation of over middle aged people on dietary living during their elderly life. Many persons(41.9%) anticipate that some kind of change will happen in dietary living during their elderly life. They are willing to prepare their own meals by themselves (73.5% of male and 86.6% of female). It is expected that they prefer various kinds of foods, korean traditional foods, home-made foods, natural food to processed food, and nutritionally balanced foods. The balance of nutrition and easiness of digestion should be primarily considered as a base of food choice, and then taste or convenience. The result of this study indicates that korean traditional food culture can not be easily changed. If food industries had a plan to produce some items for future silver generation, they should make efforts to develop processed foods considered the nutrition and digestibility, natural foods packed conveniently for home-cooking, and food preparation equipment used easily by elderly people.

The developed system consists of a wireless biomedical signal acquisition device, a personal healthcare server, and a remote medical server. Three experiments were performed to evaluate the accuracy, reliability and operability, applicability during daily life of the developed device. First, ECG signals were measured using the developed device and commercial reference device during sitting and marking time and compared to verify the accuracy of R-R intervals. Second, the reliable data transmission to remote server was verified on two types of simulated emergency event using patient simulator. Third, during five types of motion in daily life, the accuracy of data transmission to remote server using CDMA network was verified on two types of event occurring. By acquiring and comparing subject's biomedical signal and motion signal, the accuracy, reliability and operability, applicability during daily life of the developed device were verified. In addition, PDA-phone based wireless system enabled subject to be monitored without any constraints. Therefore, the developed system is expected to be applicable for monitoring the aged and chronic diseased people and giving first-aid in emergency.

  • Chloride penetration is considered as a most crucial factor for the determination of the service life of concrete. A lot of experimental tools for the chloride penetration into concrete have been developed, however, the mechanism was based on only diffusion, although permeability is also main driving forces for the chloride penetration. Permeation reacts on submerged concrete impacting for short to long term durability while capillary suction occurs on only dried concrete for very early time. Furthermore, hydrostatic pressure increases in proportional to measured depth from the surface of water because of the increasing weight of water exerting downward force from above. It is thought, therefore, that the water pressure has a great influence on the chloride penetration and thereby on the service life of marine concrete. In this study, new experiment is designed to examine the effect of water pressure on chloride penetration in concrete quantitatively. As an experiment result, pressure leaded a quick chlorides penetration by a certain depth, while diffusion induced chlorides to penetrate inward slowly. Therefore, it was concluded that chloride should penetrates significantly by water pressure and the phenomena should be accelerated for concrete exposed to deep sea. The research is expected as a framework to define the service life of submerged concrete with water pressure and compute water permeability coefficient of cementitious materials.

  • As it recently appears that Life Cycle Cost Analysis may be considered as new methodology for economic valuation of infrastructure many researches have been made to assess LCC(Life Cycle Cost) of each facility based on a reasonable methods. In general, LCC is composed of construction cost and expected maintenance repair cost. And especially, maintenance repair cost must be estimated to enhance the reliability through systematic and reasonable methods. However in Korea, because high speed railway steel bridges are recently constructed no direct statistical data are available for the account of the maintenance cost and then their maintenance characteristics are not linear yet. Therefore, the approach proposed in the paper utilizes a theoretical determination and degradation of the corrosion and fatigue of the bridges based on Rahgozar et al.(2006)'s model on fatigue notch factor considering into the corrosion to incorporate the corrosion effect into the fatigue strength reduction model. And then, the corresponding probability of failure is calculated in terms of the reliability index using S-N curve to formulate the fatigue limit state. Therefore, this paper proposes the minimum Life Cycle Cost through optimum maintenance plan analysis of high-speed railway steel bridges under construction. Finally, this paper reviews the proposed model in oder to confirm the applicability and feasibility by appling it to high speed railway steel bridges under construction

  • Bitter melon (Momordica charantia, MC) has been used in traditional Korean medicine in treating diabetes. In addition, some reports were emerged, showing the antifertility activities of MC in mammals. We investigated the effects of ethanolic MC extract on the reproductive activity of golden hamsters whose spermatogenetic capacity is controlled by their photoperiods. The animals were divided into 4 groups: long photoperiod (LP) control, short photoperiod (SP) control, and LP animals treated with MC. The animals were orally ingested with low (0.03 g/kg) or high (0.15 g/kg) concentrations of the ethanolic extracts for 8 weeks on the daily basis. The control animals received the vehicle. The animals were then mated with age-matched females, experienced pregnancy. As results, the LP control animals showed active large testes but SP control animals displayed remarkably reduced testes. The animals treated with both concentrations of MC extracts demonstrated large testes, indicating fertile activity as animals in LP. LP control animals had litters as expected, but SP controls had no litters at all. MC extract showed the same results as LP animals in generating offsprings. These results suggest that the MC extract does not change the photoperiodic influence on reproductive activity of male golden hamsters.

  • Saline groundwater was obtained from a 100-m deep basalt layer into which seawater had infiltrated. This groundwater is known to contain various minerals. Like deep seawater, saline groundwater is expected to have various applications due to the presence of biologically beneficial minerals. In Korea, saline groundwater is mainly obtained from the coastal area of Jeju. Before applying saline groundwater to various products, however, its biological safety needs to be examined. In the present study, skin and eye irritation tests were performed to assess the safety of saline groundwater according to the guidelines of the Korea Food and Drug Administration. When compared to control, Jeju saline groundwater showed no level of eye and skin irritation. These results suggest that Jeju saline groundwater induces no irritation, and is therefore sufficiently safe to be applied to the eye and skin of people.
