  • The fracture propagation mechanism and fractured rock mass failure mechanism were important research in geotechnical engineering field. Many failures and instability in geotechnical engineering were related on fractures propagation, coalescence and interaction in rock mass under the external force. Most of the current research were limited to two-dimensional for the brittleness and transparency of three-dimensional fracture materials couldn't meet the requirements of the experiment. New materials with good transparent and brittleness were developed by authors. The making method of multi fracture specimens were established and made molds that could be reused. The tension-compression ratio of the material reached above 1/6 in normal temperature. Uniaxial and biaxial loading tests of single and double fracture specimens were carried out. Four new fractures were not found in the experiment of two-dimensional fractures such as the fin shaped crack, wrapping wing crack and petal crack and anti-wing crack. The relationship between stress and strain of the specimens were studied. The specimens with the load had experienced four stages of deformation and the process of the fracture propagation was clearly seen in each stage. The expansion characteristics of the fractured specimens were more obvious than the previous research.

  • In this study, a new concept for simulating a long-term mechanical degradation mechanism of shotcrete in tunnels has been proposed. In fact, it is known that the degradation takes place mainly by internal cracks and reduced stiffness, which results mainly from volume expansion of shotcrete and corrosion of cement materials, respectively. This degradation mechanism of shotcrete in tunnels appears similar to those of the most kinds of chemical reactions in tunnels. Therefore, the mechanical degradation induced by a kinds of chemical reaction was generalized and mathematically formulated in the framework of thermodynamics. The numerical model was implemented to a 3D finite element code, which can be used to simulate behaviour of shotcrete structures undergoing external forces as well as chemical degradation in time. A number of illustrative examples were given to show the feasibility of the model in tunnel designs with consideration of long-term degradation effect of shotcrete quantitatively for increase of long-term safety of tunnels.

  • A study on passive cooling systems for concrete containment of advanced pressurized water reactors has been performed. The proposed passive containment cooling system (PCCS) consist of (1) condenser units located inside containment, (2) a steam condensing pool outside containment at higher elevation, and (3) downcommer/riser piping systems which provide coolant flow paths. During an accident causing high containment pressure and temperature, the steam/air mixture in containment is condensed on the outer surface of condenser tubes transferring the heat to coolant flowing inside tubes. The coolant transfers the heat to the steam condensing pool via natural circulation due to density difference. This PCCS has the following characteristic: (1) applicable to concrete containment system, (2) no limitation in plant capacity expansion, (3) efficient steam condensing mechanism (dropwise or film condensation at the surface of condenser tube), and (4) utilization of a fully passive mechanism. A preliminary conceptual design work has been done based on steady-state assumptions to determine important design parameter including the elevation of components and required heat transfer area of the condenser tube. Assuming a decay power level of 2%, the required heat transfer area for 1,000MWe plant is assessed to be about 2,000 ㎡ (equivalent to 1,600 of 10 m-long, 4-cm-OD tubes) with the relative elevation difference of 38 m between the condenser and steam condensing pool and the riser diameter of 0.62 m.

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been considered the most attractive power sources for mobile electronic devices. Although graphite is widely used as the anode material for commercial lithium-ion batteries, it cannot fulfill the requirement for higher storage capacity because of its insufficient theoretical capacity of 372 mAh/g. For the sake of replacing graphite, Sn-based materials have been extensively investigated as anode materials because they can have much higher theoretical capacities (994 mAh/g for Sn, 875 mAh/g for SnO, 783 mAh/g for $SnO_2$). However, these materials generate huge volume expansion and shrinkage during $Li^+$ intercalation and de-intercalation and result in the pulverization and cracking of the contact between anode materials and current collector. Therefore, there have been significant efforts of avoiding these drawbacks by using nanostructures. In this study, we present the CVD growth of SnO branched nanostructures on Cu current collector without any binder, using a combinatorial system of the vapor transport method and resistance heating technique. The growth mechanism of SnO branched nanostructures is introduced. The SnO nanostructures are evaluated as an anode for lithium-ion battery. Remarkably, they exhibited very high discharge capacities, over 520mAh/g and good coulombic efficiency up to 50 cylces.

  • This study investigates compressive strength of ice pellet strip which is potential medium for Natural Gas Hydrate(NGH) extruded from die holes of Twin-roll Press for Continuous Pelletizing(TPCP). Recently, the prototype of TPCP is newly developed where ice powder is continuously fed and extruded into strip-type pellet between twin rolls. The system is specifically designed for future expansion towards mass-production of ice pellet strips or solid form of natural gas hydrate. It is shown that the compressive strength of pellet strip heavily depends on factors in extrusion process such as disk size, surface smoothness, ring size, taper shape, feeding mechanism, and rotational speed. Here, the mechanism of TPCP, along with compressive strength of pellets is discussed in terms of its feasibility for producing NGH pellets in the future.

  • Predischarges in nonuniform electric field stressed by lightning impulse voltagesin SF(sub)6-$N_2$mixtures are initiated by streamer coronas. Due to field ehnancement at a protrusion point of electrodes new ionization processes occur and a precursor, which leads to a first leader, is created. The leader proceeds step by step to the opposite electrode and the final jump bridges the test gap. It was found that the predischarge is propagated with a leader mechanism of stepwise expansion from the predischarge current waveforms measured by a shunt. The predischarge current is closely related to the amplitude and polarity of applied voltages, the gas pressure and the gap geometry. The time intervals between step leaders for the positive and negative polarities were inversely proportional to V.P$^2$. When the gas pressure increases in the positive polarity, statistical time lag to statistical time lag to streamer corona inception increase slightly, but the formative time lag to flashover is significantly decreased.

  • Mudstone is a very common rock that, when in contact with water, can exhibit considerable volume change and breakdown. This behavior of mudstone is frequently encountered in geotechnical engineering and has a considerable influence on infrastructure stability. This is particularly important in the present work, which focuses on mitigating the harmful properties of mudstone. The samples studied are of Permian Age mudstone from Shandong Province, China. Modification tests using organic silicone additive material were carried out. The mechanisms of physical properties modification of mudstone were comparatively studied using corresponding test methods, and the modification mechanism of organic silicone additive material acting on mudstone was analyzed. The following conclusions were drawn. The surface texture and characters of mudstone changed dramatically, surface character turns from hydrophilic to hydrophobic after organic silicone additive material modification. The changes in the surface character indicate a reduction in the water sensitivity of mudstone. After modification, the shape of porosity and fracture of mudstone changed unremarkable, and the total and free expansion ratios decreased obviously, whereas the strength increased markedly.

  • A separate type rotary engine consisting of a compressor and an expander is under development. The engine motoring, compressor pressure, and fuel combustion have been tested with the initial prototype for operability checks of the mechanism. This paper describes an engine cycle analysis method designed specifically for this new-concept engine. The unique operational mechanism of the engine and the thermodynamic properties of each step of air intake, compression, filling of combustion chamber, combustion, expansion and exhaust were analyzed. The cycle efficiencies of this engine according to various engine design parameters as well as the cooling effect of compressed air between the compressor and expander can be easily calculated with this method; further, some case studies are presented in this paper.

  • Carcinogenesis can be theoretically divided to intiation step and promotion step. Intiation associates with genetic alterations including p53 tumor suppressor gene and ras oncogene. Promotion involves in clonal expansion of of an initiated cell by epigenetic mechanism, mainly through signal transduction and gene expression. Ultraviolet light (UV) acts as both initiator and promoter. Initiation is closely related with DNA damage induced by UV, including cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, (6-4) photoproducts and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and (6-4) photoproducts are directly induced by UV, while 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine is induced indirectly by the reactive oxygen species. Because initiation is an irreversal genetic event, while promotion is a reversal and epigenetic event, to know the molecular mechanisms of tumor promotion in UV-carcinogenesis is crucial to develop preventive medicine and suppress UV-carcinogenesis. Because ROS is also involved in signal transduction of the cell, anti-oxidant could be the good candidate of anti-promoting agent. Here, we describe the suppressive effect of UV-carcinogenesis by various anti-oxidant including olive oil. In addition, we discuss about the mechanism of UVB-induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2, which might be a representative molecule involved in promotion of UV-carcinogenesis.

  • Though South Korea has world-class volume of Venture Capital Investment, as a share of GDP, early stage venture investments are still short, and investments are concentrated in high technology area and Capital area. Because of the high barriers to entry of the new IPO and M&A market, the venture capital companies undergo difficulties in profit. High-tech ventures face difficulties in raising money from outside investors due to information asymmetry between venture investors and venture companies. To resolve these problems, developed countries's government make a co-funding investment scheme with private sectors and design incentive mechanism such as receiving knowledge of the reputable investors' joint venture. Korean central and local government can benchmark those of things. For example, the expansion of the investment volume with private sector, region-specific matching fund and venture capital's exit path diversification such as M&A through the establishment of a business venture eco-system. At the same time, venture companies are to make an efforts to enhance the ability of screening for venture companies and the value for investment activities through a joint venture investments.
