A geological repository system consists of a disposal canister with packed spent fuel, buffer material, backfill material, and intact rock. The buffer is indispensable to assure the disposal safety of high-level radioactive waste. Since the heat generated from spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister is released to the surrounding buffer materials, the thermal properties of the buffer material are very important in determining the entire disposal safety. Especially, since thermal expansion can cause thermal stress to the intact rock mass in the near-field, it is very important to evaluate thermal expansion characteristics of bentonite buffer materials. Therefore, this paper presents a thermal expansion coefficient prediction model of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials which is a Ca-bentonite produced in South Korea. The linear thermal expansion coefficient was measured considering heating rate, dry density and temperature variation using dilatometer equipment. Thermal expansion coefficient values of the Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials were $4.0{\sim}6.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$. Based on the experimental results, a non-linear regression model to predict the thermal expansion coefficient was suggested and fitted according to the dry density.

This paper presents ESPI system for the measurement of thermal expansion coefficient of STS430 up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$. Existing methods, strain gauge and moire have the limitation of contact to object and do not supply the coefficient up to 800$^{\circ}C$. There needs to measure the data up to 800$^{\circ}C$, because heat resistant materials have high melting temperature up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$. In previous studies related to thermal strain analysis, the quantitative results are not reported by ESPI at high temperature, yet. In-plane ESPI and vacuum chamber for the reduction of air turbulence and oxidation are designed for the measurement of the coefficient up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$and speckle correlation fringe pattern images are processed by commercial image filtering tool-smoothing, thinning and enhancement- to obtain quantitative results, which is compared with references data. The comparison shows two data are agreed within 4.1% blow 600$^{\circ}C$ however, there is some difference up to 600$^{\circ}C$. Also, the incremental ratio of the coefficient is changed up to 800$^{\circ}C$. The reason is the phase transformation of STS430 probably begins at 800$^{\circ}C$.

This paper propose the method to produce GRM(Generalized Reed-Muller)expansion. The general method to obtain GRM expansion coefficient for p valued n variable is derivation of single variable transform matrix and expand it n times using Kronecker product. In this case the size of matrix increases depending on the augmentation of variables. In this paper we propose the simple algorithm to produce GRM coefficient using a single variable transform matrix.

With increasing demand for LNG as energy resources and need for $CO_2$ sequestration as greenhouse gas, more storage facilities are required in Korea. Due to the recent acute safety concerns and land shortage, storage facilities tend to be located underground. In design and construction of underground storage for low and high temperature materials, besides their mechanical characteristics, the thermal characteristics of rock under temperature variation should be understood. In this study, laboratory experiments for the measurement of the thermal expansion coefficient of rock were performed using strain gauge in consideration of the particle size of mineral and experiment temperature range. Experiment results show that thermal expansion coefficient decreased as the temperature decreases. In addition, linear thermal expansion coefficient was developed for typical Korean rocks such as granite. The results of this study can be utilized for the evaluation of thermal propagation in rock mass and the thermo-mechanical stability of underground facilities.
The thermal expansion, thermal stability, mechanical strength and infrared radiative property of Al2TiO5-clay composites, prepared from synthesized Al2TiO5 and clay, were investigated to develop a material for far infrared radiators. The emittance of composites containing 10~50 wt% clay, heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, increased with increasing clay content and emittance was about 0.3 and 0.92 in the ranges of 3,400~2,500 cm-1 and 2,500~400cm-1, respectively. The bulk density and bending strength of the Al2TiO5-clay composites increased with increasing clay content. 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite, heat-treated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$, had an adequate strength for infrared radiators; 80 MPa. The degree of thermal expansion hysteresis decreased with increasing clay content and the mean thermal expansion coefficient increased with increasing clay content. The thermal expansion coefficient of 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ was 5.78$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$.
Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. It is well known that volume expansion due to the phase transformation could influence on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. For this purpose, the analysis is carried out in two regions. i.e., heating and cooling, because the variation of material properties following a phase transformation in cooling is different in comparison with the case in heating, even at the same temperature. The variation of material properties following phase transformation is considered by the adjustment of specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient, and the distribution of residual stress in analysis is compared with that of experiment by previous study. consequently, in this study, simplified numerical procedures considering phase transformation, which based on a commercial finite element package was established through comparing with the experimental data of residual stress distribution by other researcher. To consider the phase transformation effect on residual stress relaxation, the transition of mechanical and thermal property such as thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat capacity was found by try and error method in this analysis.

Autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete is affected high temperature history. So to evaluate autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete accurately, thermal expansion in it should be removed. In this study, compensated autogenous shrinkage was calculated after gathering thermal expansion coefficient at early age experimentally. As a result of the study. Autogenous shrinkage of mass specimen (300 ${\times}$ 300 ${\times}$ 300mm) was remarkably higher than it of standard specimen (100 ${\times}$ 100 ${\times}$ 400mm). So it was found that compensation on thermal expansion should in evaluating autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete. And this study shows results on opc and similar own contraction, if used retarder.
The purpose of this study was to measure thermal expansions of dental investments, Biovest(Casting Investment. Dentsply International INC, U.S.A.), Multi-Best (Use for all dental chrome-cobalt alloys, The Ransom & Randolph Co. U.S.A.), Kerr(Inlay Investment. Sybron Kerr, U.S.A.), O. K. (Inlay Investment. Shofu Dental MFG, Co. Japan), Whip-Mix (Cristobalite Inlay Investment. Whip-Mix Corporation. U.S.A.). Thermal expansion of specimens(5mm in diameter and 50mm in length) was measured by a dilatometer at the temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ by comparing expansion between standardized quartz and experimental specimens with heating rate about $300^{\circ}C$/hr. The following results were obtained. 1. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Biovest was $15{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 18/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 28/100. Those of Multi-Best were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 14/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 24/100. 2. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Kerr were $17{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 38/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 48/100. Those of O. K. were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 33/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 43/100 3. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Whip-Mix were $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ritio 40/100 and $12{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ Fein the water powder ratio 50/100. Those of Hi-Heat were $11{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 28/100 and $10{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 38/100.

Most bridges have expansion joints to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction without inducing large forces in the bridges. To evaluate the effects of earthquake-induced at expansion joints of concrete bridges, the first part of this paper deals with a collinear impact between concrete segments, which have the same cross section but different lengths. Especially, impact force, momentum, strain energy and kinetic energy are formulated in mathematically. These results are then used in the second part of this paper to simulate a realistic yet simple analysis of seismic pounding in concrete bridges. Analysis of seismic pounding in idealized concrete bridges is carried out by using a simple lumped-mass model and rationally determined values of the coefficient of restitution and the duration of impact.
