  • This paper is related to an analysis on the surface expansion in backward can extrusion process using spherical punches. It is generally known that the backward can extrusion process usually experiences severe normal pressure and heavy surface expansion. This is a reason why the backward can extrusion process is one of most difficult operations among many forging processes. Different punch nose radii have been applied to the simulation to investigate the effect of punch nose radius on the surface expansion, which is a major effort in this study. AA 2024 aluminum alloy is selected as a model material for investigation. Different frictional conditions have also been selected as a process parameter. The pressure applied on the punch has been also investigated since heavy surface expansion as well as high normal pressure on the tool usually leads to severe tribological conditions along the interface between material and tool. The simulation results are summarized in terms of surface expansion at different reduction in height, deformation patterns including strain distributions and maximum pressure exerted on the workpiece and punch, the effect of punch nose radius and the frictional condition on the surface expansion and the location and magnitude of maximum pressure exerted, respectively.

  • According to the characteristics of continuous beam bridges, the relative displacement is too large to collision or even girder falling under earthquakes. A device named Cable-sliding Modular Expansion Joints(CMEJs) that can control the relative displacement and avoid collision under different ground motions is proposed. Working principle and mechanical model is described. This paper design the CMEJs, establish the restoring force model, verify the force model of this device by the pseudo-static tests, and describe and analyze results of the tests, and then based on a triple continuous beam bridge that has different heights of piers, a 3D model with or without CMEJs were established under Conventional System (CS) and Seismic Isolation System (SIS). The results show that this device can control the relative displacement and avoid collisions. The combination of isolation technology and CMEJs can be more effective to achieve both functions, but it need to take measures to prevent girder falling due to the displacement between pier and beam under large earthquakes.

  • The grounding systems provide a low resistance path for fault or normal currents into the earth. The material for reducing ground resistance is buried around the grounding electrode to increase its effective size of the electrode and thus to obtain low ground resistance. Increasing the contacting area with the grounding electrode is effective for lowering the ground resistance in soils. Using this idea the conductive expansion ground resistance reducing material was developed. In this paper experimental data has shown that the ground resistance reduction method using proposed material is superior to using a typically available commercial ground resistance reducing material.

  • Die design to minimize the die wear in the cold forging process is very important as it reduce the production cost and the increase of the production rate. The quantitative estimation fur the die wear is too hard because the die wear is caused by many process variables. So, in this paper, the optimal shape of the backward extrusion punch is newly designed through the FE-analysis considering the surface expansion and Archard wear model in order to reduce the rapid wear rate that is generated for the backward extruded products exceeding the forming limit. The main shape variables of the backward extrusion punch are the flat diameter, angle, and round of the punch nose part. As the flat diameter and angle of the punch nose are larger, the surface expansion is reduced and the wear rate is decreased according to the reduction of the punch round. These results obtained through this study can be applied to the real manufacturing process.

  • A new control method to alleviate the impulsive noise at the exit of high-speed railway tunnel was applied to the compression wave at the entrance of the tunnel. This method uses the interaction phenomenon of unsteady expansion wave and unsteady compression wave. Unsteady expansion wave was assumed to be made instantaneously by the simple theory of shock tube. Total Variation Diminishing method was employed to solve the axisymmetric unsteady compressible flow field with a specified compression wave. Numerical results show that the maximum pressure gradient of the propagating compression wave decreases with increase of the wave length of the unsteady expansion wave. It is found that the impulsive noise reduction can be obtained when the unsteady expansion wave with a large wave length is emitted just before the train enters the tunnel. The present results give the possibility to reduce the impulsive noise at the exit of tunnel.

  • We present a new framework for rental capacity management in which rental capacity is dynamically managed by means of temporary inventory addition/return. While serving customers with its own (native) capacity, the rental firm rents additional rental capacity from an upper echelon rental company so that it can avoid lost sales which may occur when stock is not sufficient, and returns it when stock becomes sufficiently large enough to cope with demands. Formulating the model as a Markov decision process, we investigate a flexible capacity addition/return policy that maximizes the firm's profit with respect to system costs. Numerical study indicates that rental operation with capacity addition/return can be economically favorable over rental operation without capacity expansion/return and can contribute the reduction in the size of native rental capacity.

  • Form the application of long rail system the non-ballast steel plate bridges, fatigue strength increase and rail noise reduction can be expected. This is mainly form the reduction of the rail impact at the rail joint locations which already made to behave together from welds. In the high speed rail, application of long rail system is essential because without long rail system, the required serviceability level can not be achieved. But even with this long rail systems, the thermal expansion from the girder can not be absorbed in the normal bearing systems, and these expansion cause between girder and rail. Also unexpected rail buckling and fracture through rail thermal tension may happen. It was found through numerical analysis and field measurement that these problems can be avoided by semi-fixed bearing system. In this study, the benefits of non-ballast plate bridge through long rail system, especially at the point of girder stability, girder stiffness increase and bearing maintenance will be reviewed.

  • The switch mode power supply is a source of EMI with other equipment as well as with its own proper operation because of rapid changes in voltages and currents within a switching converter. The EMI is transmitted in two forms: radiated and conducted. Conducted noise consists of two categories known as the differential mode and the common mode. Common mode noise current is a major source of EMI in the switch mode Power supply. Recently, a current balancing technique has been studied to reduce the common mode noise. This paper investigates the reduction of common mode noise according to a node expansion of the switch mode power supply which is based on a current balancing technique. In this paper, seven PCB patterns of the forward converter are manufactured and experimented.
