The combustion characteristics have been investigated to develop the 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor. The combustor design program was developed and applied to design this combustor. The combustion air which has the temperature of 45, 200, $300^{\circ}C$ were supplied to combustor for elucidating the effect of inlet air temperature on CO, NOx emissions and flame temperature. The exit temperature and NO were increased and CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. Also, the effect of equivalence ratio was considered to verify the combustor performance. The emissions of CO and NO with inlet air temperature can be analyzed qualitatively by measuring the temperature inside the combustor. The combustion performance with fuel schedule was evaluated to get the informations of the starting and part loading process of gas turbine. The combustion was stable above the equivalence ratio of 0.18. The pattern factor which is the important parameter of combustor performance was satisfied with the design criterion. Consequently the combustor was proved to meet the performance goal required for the target gas turbine system.
The laboratory experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of air preheated temperature on the emission characteristics by a model gas turbine burner with a hybrid/dual swirl jet flames configuration. The concentration of NOx and CO emissions, and flue gas temperature at combustor exit were measured with varying the equivalence ratio for different air preheated temperatures of 300, 400, 500K at atmospheric pressure. It was overall shown that the NOx and CO emissions, and flue gas temperature were decreased according to the decreasing of equivalence ratio due to the effects of lean premixed combustion regardless of the air preheated temperature. Experimental results of a lean premixed flames configuration indicated that the NOx emission was increased with higher inlet air temperature and air flow rate, which is attributed to the increasing of flue gas temperature and heat release related to the thermal NOx mechanism. But the CO emission was shown the opposite tendency, that is, the CO emission was decreased with increasing of inlet air temperature and flow rate.
A preburner is one of the key components for a staged combustion cycle engine fueled by kerosene and Lox. Since it has oxygen rich combustion inside, temperature control is very crucial. The temperature of the exhaust gas should be low enough not to burn turbine blade and yet high to keep the efficiency high. In addition temporal and spatial deviations also managed strictly. Conventionally, the required average and maximum temperature are determined by engine system and the preburner should be developed to meet the criteria. Currently being developed preburner has 50K spatial temperature deviation requirement. It was estimated by numerical simulations and proven by tests. The numerical analysis were done with both supercritical condition and normal conditions. The tests results showed that the temperature deviations were less than expected, and the results from the test and simulations were well agreed when the supercritical conditions were considered. Above all, since the gas temperature created by the preburner is very stable with minimum deviation, the preburner developed can be used to drive a turbine and for gas-liquid combustion chambers.
Cooling the in-wheel motor in electric vehicles is critical to its performance and durability. In this study, thermal flow analysis was conducted by evaluating the thermal performance of two conventional cooling models for in-wheel motors under the continuous rating base speed condition. For conventional model #1, in which cooling oil was stagnant in the lower end of the motor, the maximum temperature of the coil was $221.7^{\circ}C$; for conventional model #2, in which cooling oil was circulated through the exit and entrance of the housing and jig, the maximum temperature of the coil was $155.4^{\circ}C$. Therefore, both models proved unsuitable for in-wheel motors since the motor control specifications limited the maximum temperature to $150^{\circ}C$.
Low-grade waste heat has generally been discarded in industry due to lack of efficient recovery methods. In recent years, organic Rankine cycle(ORC) has become a field of intense research and appears as a promising technology for conversion of heat into useful work of electricity. In this work thermodynamic performance of ORC with superheating of vapor is comparatively assessed for various working fluids. Special attention is paid to the effects of system parameters such as the evaporating temperature on the characteristics of the system such as maximum possible work extraction from the given source, volumetric flow rate per 1 kW of net work and quality of the working fluid at turbine exit as well as thermal efficiency.
Diverging channel from gas burner exit to the inlet section of Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) has been re-designed for 1 MW steam supply and power generation system. Three different test geometries have been chosen for the numerical simulation. The existing design for 300 kW HRSG system (CASE B) has been improved by geometry and position changes of inlet guide vanes along with gas velocity entrance angle at the diverging channel inlet (CASE C). Both cases has been compared with the case where hot combustion gas is directly injected without any guide vanes (CASE A). Improved design shows overall uniform velocity and temperature distribution compared to existing design.
Reduced-scale experimental study was carried out on the heat flow behavior which flows under the sloped ceiling in underground fire. Temperature and flow velocity were measured to characterize the ceiling jet along the sloped stairway ceiling. The methanol fuel was used as a model fire source giving 2.2 and 3.4 kW, with changing the slope angle of stairway adopting of 15, 25, 35, and 45 deg. Based on the experimental data, excess temperature and velocity along the sloped stairway ceiling were examined which are usefully applicable to estimate the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler head mounted on the sloped ceiling. Excess temperature in upper exit of the sloped stairway was also examined to analyze the soffit which delays the smoke diffusion. The result shows that the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler in the sloped stairway ceiling have to be considered differently in a point of about 30 deg.
Recently, microturbines have received attention as a small-scale distributed power generator. Since the exhaust gas carries all of the heat release, the microturbine CHP (combined heat and power) system is relatively compact and easy to maintain. Generating hot water or steam is usual method of heat recovery from the microturbine. In this work, a heat recovery unit producing hot water was installed at the exhaust side of a 30 kW class microturbine and its performance characteristics following microturbine power variation was investigated. Heat recovery performance has been compared for different operating conditions such as constant hot water temperature and constant water flow rate. In particular, the influence of water flow rate and hot water temperature on the recovered heat was analyzed.
Thermal analysis of a cooling module using Peltier elements are performed using a commercial software, CFD-ACE+. A standard k-e two-equation turbulent model is applied in order to represent the turbulent shear stress. Computed values are compared with the theoretical values for the validation. The effect of mass flow rates and transferred heat amounts on the temperature distributions inside the cooling system is analyzed. It was found that the increase in the mass flow rates causes the exit temperature rise. The increase in the absorbed heat amount diminished the overall temperature on the fin surfaces. In the present analysis, the material characteristics of the Peltier element itself are not considered. In the future, the effect of the turbulence models and material characteristics will be studied in detail.
In the present study, the heat transfer performance on the heat recovery ventilator with rotary disk were experimentally investigated. The temperature of entrance and exit of the heat recovery ventilator, air flow distribution of high temperature air and low temperature air, heat flux and the overall heat transfer coefficients are estimated from the experimental results. As the number of revolution of rotary disk, the air flow distribution increase, heat flux and overall heat transfer coefficients increase.
