  • In this paper, the applicability of PHC piles to replace Myanmar local piles were evaluated. In Myanmar, based on the size of the building, foundation design and field applications are carried out using bored pile and square pile. As a result of the analysis, the application of PHC pile is more economical than conventional bored pile or square pile which was applied in the high rise (17-story) and middle story (12-story) buildings. However, in the low - rise (8-story) building, the application of the existing square piles was found to be more economical than PHC pile.

  • Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency, In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement for structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result, to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • In this study, three-dimensional finite element analysis was used to analyze the behavior of existing and reinforcing piles according to the pile support conditions for vertical extension remodeling. Cap support conditions (group pile, piled raft foundation) and pile tip conditions (rock, soil embedment) were considered as factors influencing existing and reinforcing piles behavior. For the quantitative analysis of existing and reinforcing piles, the displacement, load distribution ratio, and axial force by depth according to the analysis stage were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the largest settlement occurred in the reinforcing pile due to the pre-loading method. In particular, a large amount of settlement occurred in group piles regardless of the embedment conditions. In the piled raft foundation, it was confirmed that the displacement and load distribution ratio of existing piles and reinforcing piles were reduced due to the influence of the raft. The axial force by depth showed a difference between group pile and piled raft foundation, which appears to be a major factor affecting displacement and load distribution ratio. Based on the numerical analysis results, it was confirmed that cap support conditions and pile tip embedment conditions should be considered in the design of pile foundations for vertical extension remodeling.

  • This study examined the effect of the sale price by excluding the PHC-pile cost from the construction costs for basic type (CCsBT) as an additional cost. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport excluded the PHC-pile cost in the CCsBT and new method so that only the designed pile quantity was recognized as an additional cost. The effect on the sale price was analyzed by comparing the pile cost of the existing and new methods. For this purpose, seven cases were selected, and the PHC-pile cost was estimated. The existing method was estimated as the ratio of the pile cost to CCsBT. The new method was estimated based on the bill of quantity. As a result, the CCsBT decreased by approximately 2-3% when the PHC-pile cost was calculated in the new method. Furthermore, as a result of comparing the sale price, excluding the PHC-pile cost with the sale price, the CCsBT decreased by approximately 1%. These results are expected to help improve the understanding of the CCsBT. Also, this paper contributes to promoting national housing stability through institutional improvement.

  • The finite element method (FEM) is widely used to evaluate the seismic performance of pile-supported buildings. However, there are problems associated with modeling the pile end resistance using the FEM, such as the dependence on the mesh size. This paper proposes a new method of modeling around the pile tip to avoid the mesh size effect in two-dimensional (2D) analyses. Specifically, we consider the area of influence around the pile tip as an artificial constraint on the behavior of the soil. We explain the problems with existing methods of modeling the pile tip. We then conduct a three-dimensional (3D) analysis of a pile in various soil conditions to evaluate the area of influence of the soil around the pile tip. The analysis results show that the normalized area of influence extends approximately 2.5 times the diameter of the pile below the pile tip. Finally, we propose a new method for modeling pile foundations with artificial constraints on the nodal points within the area of influence. The proposed model is expected to be useful in the practical seismic design of pile-supported buildings via a 2D analysis.

  • The existing methods for installation of long steel pipe pile have some uneconomical problems such as increase of installation cost and period due to the welding of two piles and removal of soil plug, and decrease of driving efficiency due to the increase of driving resistance resulting from time effect during the welding of piles and removal of soil plug, etc. Thus, in this study, new installation method for long steel pipe pile is suggested to solve the existing problems, and calibration chamber tests were performed to investigate both driving and economical efficiency for the suggested method. The test results showed that the new method increased bearing capacity, and decreased the installation cost and period for long steel pipe piles compared with existing methods.

  • This paper deals with the results for a numerical analysis of single piles and pile groups in multi-layers soil(granite soil-clay-granite soil) subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single pile, pile diameter (0.5m), pile length (10m), and pile groups. Numerical analyses were conducted by variation of spacing piles(s=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile without cap and group pile. The $1{\times}3$ pile group(leading pile, middle pile, trail pile) was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles. The analysis model of clay and the material of granite soil was modeled by using Druker-Prager constitutive relationship and existing treatise respectively. The pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. As a result, the more pile space was extended, the value of P-multiplier is appeared to be less effective to leading pile. The lateral resistance of single-layer showed approximately 4-20% larger than the multi-layers.

  • Rapid urbanization of many cities require large scale constructions such as high rise buildings in difficult ground conditions. SIP(Soil-cement Injected Precast pile) type piles are tile most popular choice of foundation method in soft ground as well as layered ground in many cities in Korea since SIP offer negligible amount of noise and vibration. But SIP method of construction provide wide range of pile capacity depending on the construction method, equipment, ground conditions and quality control method etc. Therefore this paper intend to investigate the reliability of SIP pile in layered ground through a comparison of existing design formulars and SIP pile load test.
