  • This paper compared vertical temperature distribution between the existing balcony model without ventilator facilities and the improved balcony model with ventilator facilities using differential equation. As the air inside of balcony is heated by solar radiation this heated air is not exhausted in the existing balcony, remaining stagnant. The air temperature distribution was $26.7{\sim}29.3^{\circ}C$ in balcony without natural ventilator system. This heated air affected the rising air temperature of adjacent spaces such as living room and bedroom in the existing balcony. But, as the heated air inside of the improved balcony model is exhausted through natural ventilator facilities in summer, the air temperature in balcony has fallen. The air temperature distribution in improved balcony was $24.8{\sim}26.7^{\circ}C$ for the inlet air speed of 1 m/s and $24.6{\sim}26.7^{\circ}C$ for the inlet air speed of 3 m/s. The energy consumption of the improved balcony is 2.5 times less than of the existing balcony. The improved balcony with the closed damper makes a roll as the existing balcony in the aspect of the heating effect. When the heated air in the improved balcony is supplied, the air temperature is raised and the ventilation effect in adjacent spaces was improved.

  • The balcony of our apartment building consists of unique construction similar to double skin. It is announced broadly that double skin is very effective system in improvement of natural ventilation and indoor thermal environment, and outdoor sound protection. So, for the improvement of indoor climate and energy saving, many peoples studied about environmental performance of our balcony construction. This study focus on shaft box facade, special form of box window construction. It consists of a system of box window with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. Proto-type was decided by analyzing various types of exiting apartments. Shaft box type balcony was created by setting up shaft space at a part of balcony. Air flow and contribution of air temperature were simulated, performance of shaft box type balcony was compared with existing balcony. Finally, we confirmed that shaft box type balcony has many possibility for improvement of indoor environment.

  • The purpose of this study was to make clear the indoor environmental efficiency of front balcony 'in apartment houses during winter. The field measurements of indoor environmental elements were carried out at an ordinary house with an existing front balcony and a house renovated the front balcony into the living room. The measurements in two-subject houses were taken on simultaneously the 20$^{th}$ ${\sim}$ 21$^{th}$ of January 2003. As results, the averages indoor temperature in the ordinary house and the renovated house were same as 23.6${\circ}$C, and the averages globe temperature in two houses were same as 23.7${\circ}$C. But, estimated heating time of the renovated house was longer than that of the ordinary house. The daily ranges of indoor temperature and globe temperature in the renovated house were wider than the ordinary house. The daily ranges of indoor temperature and globe temperature in the renovated house was longer than that of the ordinary house. The uniformity ratio range of daylight in the ordinary house were calculated at 1/3.4${\sim}$1/6.2, but those of the renovated house were 1/6${\sim}$1/16.2. Therefore. it was found that indoor temperature, globe temperature and uniformity ratio of daylight in the ordinary house maintained more constant than the renovated house by green house effect and earning effect of front balcony.

It consists of a system of box window with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. The subject building was decided by analyzing various types of exiting apartments. Shaft box type balcony was devised by setting up shaft space at a part of balcony. Air flow and indoor air temperature were simulated, performance of shaft box type balcony was compared with existing types using VE computer simulation program. Research consequence can be summarized as follow: 1) In the case of existing types, the change of window opening rate has only a little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, air flow rate increased two times in the case that changed opening rate 20% to 40% 2) In the case of existing types, the growth of air flow rate has little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, shaft box type represented the remarkable effect on the improvement of indoor temperature as well as the growth of air flow rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to make clear the indoor environmental efficiency and spatial function of the front balcony in apartments using responses from residents'. An interview survey carried out during the 14/sup th/∼24/sup th/ of January 2003, and a questionnaire survey was given during the 17/sup th/∼29/sup th/of January. Interviewees consisted of 31 residents living in renovated apartments, which had the front balcony added onto the living room. The respondents of the questionnaire survey consisted of 37 residents living in ordinary apartments with an existing front balcony. The residents living in ordinary apartments show relatively positive responses on the indoor thermal environment during winter, glare by daylight, and outdoor noise. The average heating charges of the renovated apartments came out to be more expensive than the ordinary apartments. In most renovated apartments, the living area converted from front balcony was used as the same functions ('space for drying the laundry', 'storage space', or 'space for cultivating of flower pots') of ordinary front balcony. From the results of this study, it is undesirable to renovate the front balcony as an addition to the livingroom.

  • Analysis was carried out on the floor impact sound level between existing plan and enlarged plan with balcony remodeled. Because there is no standardized method to measure the floor impact sound for the apartment with balcony remodeled, two sets of sound source and receiver position were applied depending on whether it is enlarged or not. As a result, it is discovered that different positioning of sound source or receiver in the apartment with balcony remodeled could lead to different result.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide new design techniques for designers to design energy saving balcony in the apartment house using solar energy passively. These design techniques are examined with some samples of foreign buildings used solar energy passively. To classify these design techniques, this study sorts out the energy saving design elements from the preliminary studies. The results of this study show how to apply each design technique to the design of balcony in the apartment house and present a classification table of these techniques. Finally, this study suggests a design solution which can be applied in the design of balcony in existing apartment house.

  • Due to the supply of standard plans disregarding the occupant's of apartment houses preference, the renovation of balcony has frequently been increasingly performed. As a result, the renovation has caused a loss of national economy and many problems. Existing research studies related to the balcony renovation discussed the implement plans on rate and types o( renovation. However the loss cost by balcony renovation has never been researched. This study, therefore, estimated renovation cost by surveys and analyzed the causes of renovation with regard to the selling methods of companies, awareness of occupants and re131e0 regulations.'rhis study proposes a guideline for the rebuilding the balconies of apartment houses to minimize a loss of national economy.

  • Most residential buildings in Korea are preferred to have maximum interior spaces, rather than consider its original design, overall building performance, and any other aspects since early 1990's. Especially in high-rise apartment buildings, balcony has been merged to living room to get more interior spaces and this renovation trends have been producing deep and narrow shapes of living rooms that was not initially intended by architects. On the other hand, the same gross area of each unit does not necessarily mean same width and depth ratio of each residential unit. Generally, we can categorize it to the deep or wide unit based on its width and depth ratio. Under these circumstances, this study analyzes the room usage pattern changes based on the space width and depth ratio and the effect of expansion of room space to the balcony. This study also includes about 180 apartments plan case studies to find out the relationships among w/d ratio changes, furniture arrangement types, and room configurations. In this research, general apartment room w/d ratios are 0.97 ∼ 1.23; 0.7(south facing sitting room), 1.23(south facing bed room), and 0.95(north facing bedroom). But, after expanding room space to balcony w/d ratio increased as follows; sitting room become 1.31, general south facing bedroom become 1.23, and north facing bedroom become 1.45. In addition to user preference of w/d ratio, many people prefer rectangular room shape a little(w/d ratio is 0.9 or 1.2) than square style (w/d ratio is 1.0) or very deep room style (w/d ratio Is more over 1.5). Accordingly, expanding the room space to balcony may make unsatisfactory room w/d ratio. Expanding room space to balcony should be considered by existing room w/d ratio.
