  • The purpose of this paper is to verify a finite element model of an automotive exhaust system using Modal testing. In general, a lot of finite element models are used in initial design step of automotive development. One of them is a finite element model of an exhaust system. Verification on the finite element model of an automotive exhaust system is indispensable. In this paper, a finite element analysis on the exhaust system using MSC/NASTRAN is carried out, and the results are compared with those obtained by modal testing. By comparing MAC values of the analytical modes with the experimental modes, the finite element model of the automotive exhaust system is verified.

  • Recently, it has been important to develop light, silent and less-vibrational automobile. In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of the noise caused by the main silencer components-stiffener flange, inlet pipe and exhaust pipe etc., computational flow analysis, vibration and noise experiments were performed about the variable heights of the stiffener flange. Flow structure in the mainsilencer which calculated by CFD solver-IDEAS ESC, and frequency response function results of impact hammer test was proposed and it was found good agreement between former results and the exhaust orifice noise measured.

  • Micro gas turbine(MGT) has received attention recently as small-scale distributed power sources. With characteristics such as their small size, lightweight, low maintenance cost and minimal vibrations during operation, they are expected to become widespread in a wide range of ' applications, including residential and small-scale industrial use. It is very easier to start-up and stop the MGT system which is the friendly environmental power system has just below the 9ppm NOx emmission and good quality of noise level. The exhaust heat emitted by the MGT is in the form of about $300^{\circ}C$ clean exhaust gas. The exhaust gas is suitable for absorption chiller/heater system. 1 has researched performance characteristics of the 60 kW class MGT-absorption chiller-heater system in the local condition. Variations of heat recovery from exhaust gas has measured according to micro gas turbine output of 15, 30, 45, 60kW. From those results, the performance of the MGT-absorption chiller/heater system has been evaluated.

  • In recent years, the driving performance and exhaust sound quality in automobiles have been recognized as important factors, as they maximize the driving fun to fulfil the demands of customers. Therefore, many automobile manufacturers are studying various exhaust pipe shapes to improve sound quality and optimize exhaust pressure. The objective of the exhaust pipe design is to maximize the engine efficiency using optimal exhaust pressure settings. In this study, an exhaust system was fabricated with different junction shapes, and the results were analyzed through various experiments. The exhaust gas pressure acting inside the exhaust pipe was measured using a pressure transducer. Meanwhile, the vibration generated in the vehicle was measured in three axial directions and analyzed. The ground noise generated in the indoor and outdoor of the vehicle was measured, and the noise generated at the maximum output was measured and analyzed.

  • Exhaust facility has basically the role of flame deflector, and considering additional functions, it can be classified by noise/emission suppressor and altitude simulation facility. In this paper, principles of flame deflector, jet pump, emission suppression are presented for exhaust treatment facility. Principles of noise suppression caused by Mach wave mitigation, jet energy mitigation by water evaporation and condensation are shown. In addition, a concept of vertical exhaust treatment facility is presented applying basic principles aforementioned.

  • The muffler reducing the exhaust noise and vibration from the engine influence on the engine performance. Recently the semi-active muffler was developed and adopted to the actual use in consideration of the cost and technical side for noise and vibration. This study is about the recently developed semi-active muffler. This paper attempt to analyze the dynamic stress field on the gate plate by using the finite element methods. According to the analysis of the Exhaust Variable Valve, its spring has the most influence on its operation compare with effects of other components. The design parameters of the Exhaust Variable Valve such as the spring displacement, diameter, coil number, free angle and so forth were used.

  • To reduce backpressure for improving engine power in exhaust system, a large difference of pressure is required, but this is in conflict with the requirement for reducing exhaust noise that needs a small pressure difference. In this paper, the controllable muffler designed by simplifying the structure of the exhaust system has a low backpressure and a proper sound specification to the rotation of engine. The exhaust system in conventional studies has been designed to have maximum noise reduction over the whole driving domain, but due to its complex structure this led to increased backpressure. If the muffler is designed according to the driving frequency, which is a dominant noise component in stationary driving speed, the backpressure is reduced due to the simplified structure of the muffler. Furthermore, a multi-mode muffler able to change structure with varied driving speed was designed.

  • The exhaust noise reduction of automobile with the active muffler is experimentally investigated. The control algorithm is the filtered-x LMS algorithm and the inverse algorithm with the adaptive line enhancer. Also, the control efficiency is increased with synthesized second harmonic engine frequency. In the experiment, the active muffler is applied to the end of exhaust system in automobile and the control with on-line secondary path modeling method(inverse algorithm) is compared the control of off-line secondary path modeling method. As secondary path transfer functions are changed, the experimental results show that the control performance with on-line method is more efficient than that with off-line method in the exhaust noise reduction of automobile.

  • In this paper, we studied on an attenuation effect of automobile exhaust noise according to the direction of secondary sound source in duct ANC system. Automobile exhaust noise was recorded at 800rpm. 3500rpm and 5000rpm of a diesel engine. Directions of loudspeaker(second sound source) can be exchanged to $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $150^{\circ}$ against the primary noise flow by acrylic ducts to be made for experimentation. DSP board with TMS320C6416 chip of Texas Instrument Co used to control adaptive ANC system. This ANC system is based on the single-channel FxLMS algorithm. In experiment result, when the loud speaker direction was $150^{\circ}$, the attenuation effect showed largely. In case of $90^{\circ}$ duct, the noise was a little increased. In case of $30^{\circ}$ duct, the noise was a little increased or decreased according to the frequency range and the sound pressure(dB) of exhaust noise to comply with engine rpm.

  • In this paper, the sound radiation level of parts of a O.B. Motor was measured and analyzed by the measurement method using wave-guide reverberation environment. Based on the above measurement results, a noise control was established for engine cover and exhaust silencer and its effects were compared and analyzed. The noise control method increased transmission loss by painting GELNAC on the engine cover and extend exhaust pipe to reach under water.
